You can almost guarantee in New Zealand there'll be National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation on TV at some point in the season. Squirrel!

Dear BBC, how dare you schedule family show Doctor Who at a time the family can all sit and watch it together. Well in my case I tend to watch the Xmas specials later in the evening or the day after, as A) I'm usually fairly tipsy by that point, or half asleep B) The Xmas specials are very hit and miss i.m.o, C) And only a couple of my family members watch the show anyway, I'd prefer to watch it be myself rather than have them talking or complaining all the way through, last year I didn't watch much TV on the day or Boxing Day, we had alot of fun doing board games instead...

Oh sure, one doesn't have to watch it as it airs but it's still the time of day one would expect the BBC to schedule a family show on Xmas Day.

Nah, I would expect them to air a family show at 8pm.

Nah, I would expect them to air a family show at 8pm. You mean after the kids have gone to bed? How is that appropriate timing for a family show?

It's before the watershed. A Christmas Carol aired at 8pm in 2010 and got incredible viewing figures. The watershed is the end of the process when the schedulers can legitimately say that even the OLDEST kids are expected to be in bed and not watching telly. It's not a catch-all time when ALL kids go to bed.
See this online chart Age Hours of Sleep Bedtime 10-15 months 12-14 6:00 -7:30 15 months – 3 years 12-14 6:00 -7:30 3 – 6 years 11-13 6:00 – 8:00 7 – 12 years 10-11 7:30 – 9:00
So all under tens are expected to be in bed by eight or not long after. Quite an important age group Doctor Who wise.
AND that's not taking into account the recommendation that the child should spend at least half an hour without screens just before bed-time.

5:45 Is a Great time for Dr who......Teatime!
it's where the show should always be.
there will be inevitable repeats for those who cannot watch it and iplayer is always available.
no complaints here

Well, I can safely say when I was around that age I never went to bed at 8pm. More like 9pm - later if Ant and Dec were on.

I always stayed up late by those times, basically because I always refused to go earlier whatever my mum did or said, but I was also very aware from an early age that my peers were generally in bed at least an hour before I was. Each child is their own being with their own needs, the watershed is basically a time when if children are up beyond parents are expected to take full responsibility for what they see, it's not a hard and fast rule about when children have to go to bed.

I always was in bed for 8pm, until I was 11....routine was corrie then bed. after that it was up to me but I had to be up at 6:30am, and not allow to nap!
so bedtime was often as early as I could get away with.....
both adults and children do not sleep enough these days......me included!

Why are you discussing bed times, when the show is on at 5.45pm ( I'd actually pressed ? three times)

Why are you discussing bed times, when the show is on at 5.45pm ( I'd actually pressed ? three times) Because Dalekbuster thinks 8pm is the perfect time slot.

Better the Beeb is safe than sorry, especially given how ratings have been a punching bag during Capaldi's reign.

Strange. I could have sworn there was one year the Christmas Special was on at 8pm.
