A tension fuelled emotional rollercoaster & it did feel like closure to the series. I found the solution that giving Eurus a hug was a very anticlimactic solution that jarred a otherwise amazingly tense episode, Eurus murdered & manipulated people for her own personal gains to try undo that & humanize her fell flat to me. No doubt I'm missing the point somewhere but that's my summary He solved her puzzle, meaning she's not longer alone.

Of course there's a thread hanging
What on earth did they say to "Red Beards" parents?

Went up to 9.5 within 24 hours though. Still means 3 million + viewers didn't make it a priority to watch on the night

Funny that as I've seen people say "I watched Endeavour instead because I enjoy it more". Well I watched that episode last night and it's almost as strange Cheers Tony

I was one of them. I watched it yesterday. I don't think it's unreasonable that less people watched live on a normal Sunday than on a Holiday one. In fact I delayed because I was looking forward to it so much and I knew I'd be more likely to be interrupted on Sunday.

It was like The Sea Devils meets Skyfall. Loved it. Surreal use of imagery throughout and Euros was genuinely creepy. The reveal behind the opening sequence was a bit annoying but apart from that it was as close to perfect as I've ever seen. I knew the plane was fake, it was approaching the city, then there was a gap of some hours and it was still approaching the city. Sherlock should have twigged to that earlier. I didn't work out what it actually was though.
I genuinely hope they never do any more, because I don't see how they could match this.

And its great that Moffatt and Gatiss stuck this landing in such superb style. Most likely as they built this version and world from the ground up themselves.
But damn just brilliant

Went up to 9.5 within 24 hours though. They're believed to be the consolidated figures for either episode one or two used in error.
The overnights and consolidated figures for episode three wouldn't be available so close together, would they?

Pretty self-explanatory given how many ways there are to watch it at the moment, especially when the episode leaked online. Not when the live watching audience for the pervious 2 eps was 8 million + unless 2 million people went looking for the illegal copy.

It's worth noting that 'the first three Sundays of the year' are not the same as 'any three consecutive Sundays'. The first was New Years Day, a day where hardly anyone can be fagged doing anything and so TV audience figures have a good night. The second is the last day before return to work for certain employment sectors so again people are more likely to be at home. The third is the end of that weekend where folk start to catch up with normal routines and commitments.

I don't know why people bother about ratings if it was the last Sherlock episode ever. (Which it felt like to me.) It's not like they are going to affect anything now!
Either way, it was a damn good episode to end what was a classic TV show. If three million less people watched it, then that's their loss! I hope they catch-up on iPlayer or buy the DVD/Blu-Ray. But I loved the twists and turns that we got in these episodes, Sherlock this year really nailed it as great TV entertainment. I am going to miss those characters!

Ok last word from me on the subject because I didn't see this post
It is interesting it went up 3 million in another 12 hours and the BBC made it news in the first place.

That's what I'm saying though, I've read it said that the 9.5 is not the consolidated figure for THAT episode. BBC News have quoted that wrongly.

I think a fifth series would be a mistake, because they're never going to get an ending as perfect as that one. Then again, I said the same thing about the ending to Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and the third movie they followed it up with (Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted) was a big improvement on the second film.

Maybe a one-off special at some point, but I hope this remains the last series. All the plotlines so were paid off (even Molly's love for Sherlock got a look in and that hadn't really been mentioned since Series 2) and the ending was so nice.

Yeah, a one-off case would be nice - or a crossover with Doctor Who.

All the plotlines so were paid off Thank goodness. All the negativity that's been aimed at the show has essentially been down to those dreaded 'arcs'. While the writing on this series has been a distinct improvement (it's almost as though somebody didn't have the usual distractions) and I personally enjoyed (and understood) what was going on, I can well understand the hankering of some viewers for standalone episodes where they go and solve crimes. Moffat and Gatiss have been quoted as saying that any future series would take that as the format. I think because the series wasn't originally expected to get any viewers but then became the biggest show on the planet was damaging for it because it encouraged getting too invested in the characters*. There's a malaise in television about making character the primary focus. It ought not to be - character is a tool for telling a story, not the other way round. And, since the end of the series showed that everything's back to normal, hopefully we'll get to see that. * I reckon they'd've got rid of Mary even if there hadn't been precedent in the books.
