I'd much rather find out when I watch the episode.
I pay very little attention to the speculation (thankfully in Canada there really isn't much in the media) so I am okay with seeing a news item announcing who the lucky actor is, but it would be much nicer to keep it a secret. I think that would make the regeneration episode that much more special and must watch.
I think it would kill the regeneration because he'd regenerate and more likely than not you'd be scratching your head wondering who the new person is when the regeneration is complete. I think the 30 or so years I've been watching Doctor Who have prepared me for a regeneration and the new face that it brings. Prior to the internet, there wasn't much chance of finding out who was taking over as the Doctor as the show received very little attention in Canadian media - still doesn't as it is very rare to see any articles or tv items discussing the show.

That's the point of doing it. When they did Tennant's fake out regeneration the media exploded for an entire week and the speculation was rampant.

Well, to be fair, in North America even if they announce the new Doctor on TV most of us will still have no clue who the person is. Not all of the recent Doctors were known to me when they took the roll and it didn't stop me from watching and for the most part enjoying their time in the series. I think the only one I had heard of was Capaldi and that was only due to my enjoyment of political TV shows.

I care about who the new Doctor is, and no matter the actor, we don't find that out till their first or second story. Actors are just people doing jobs and I don't understand the excitement about them. Sorry.

I mean that unless it's a household name you'll be wondering who the actor is. Well once the change has happened they can announce the person's name. Just make the change itself a surprise.

I guess it would depend on who they get to play the doctor

I think the best way to do it is to have the next actor to play the Doctor disguised as Peter Capaldi by way of one of those Delgado era rubber mask disguises. Then, when the time comes, he can rip off the mask and reveal his true identity!

Just because older fans like myself prefer a male doctor doesn't mean were sexist, i just prefer the doctor to be male like i don't want a female James Bond.
Besides if you had a female doctor they'd only cast a male companion to go gooey eyed over the doctor, it would be Rose Tyler MKII arc all over again.
Just concentrate on delivering so stories that the casual viewers can invest in & make the series a must watch show again.

Why boring? If they could keep it a secret, just think of the suspense you would feel as he starts to change and then revealed as ... Cheers Tony I'd rather know in advance. It would be boring not being able to rant or praise the choice for months until the Christmas Special airs. I just love the way your brain works DB.

As much as I enjoy Michelle Gomez's performance as Missy, there's a part of me that wishes it would turn out to be a cunning disguise employed by the Eric Roberts Master...

Robert Englund would make a awesome doctor. Yeah, if the BBC want to cut the budget even more they could drop the villains and cast him as the Doctor, he'd be a good doctor, and good at scaring the cr*p out of the kids...

It would be cool if they snuck in a cameo by the 13th Doctor into S10 without any of us realizing it was the 13th Doctor, just a random character who appears briefly in an episode, or walks past the camera.

Technically that could have already happened seven years ago if the Doctor is Olivia Colman...

I always forger she is in it...and I really should get around to buying some of the New Who eps on DVD, it's been years since I've seen some of the episodes (and I've only seen about half of Smith's) keep telling myself I'm waiting for a S1-10 boxset or an Amazon sale...

I'd say dont annouce who they've got. Just announce that they have one and you'll see them at Christmas or that they have a couple of people on the shortlist. Then when the regeneration happens, who 13 is will be a surprise It would be cool, if they could actually pull that off. The problem is, there would be a leak at some point. Its better for the BBC to announce the new Doctor on their own terms.
