I think they should do it during the live final of Let It Shine. Whilst the votes are being counted, stage a massive Dalek invasion in the studio. The TARDIS materialises and the new Doctor steps out, gives a grand speech and saves the day, before departing in his TARDIS. Cue Gary Barlow giving a baffled look to camera.

I was really hoping we'd get a surprise regeneration.

I'd say dont annouce who they've got. Just announce that they have one and you'll see them at Christmas or that they have a couple of people on the shortlist. Then when the regeneration happens, who 13 is will be a surprise

I'd rather know who the next Doctor is.

don't announce it........keep it till xmas
but that will probably leak cause filming is sure to start before then.
I think a talking heads style program some time after the new series finishes or a foretelling within the last episode

Hello again. Not me. Just for once I'd like the new Doctor to be a mystery until the reveal at Christmas.
It was weird, at the start of the 2005 season when all we knew was the title of the last episode, The Parting of the Ways; I did think it would be a good superb season ending if there was a surprise regeneration.
A few weeks later my thoughts became reality, and the fact it came out that Chris Eccleston was leaving was badly handled. They really missed a trick. Having said that every new Doctor even Pat Troughton has been revealed to the public before their first story.
Nothing could be quite as hideous and embarrassing as The Afterparty. The horror...

I thought the idea of the announcement show was great, the execution was disastrous.
This time plan ahead, and realise that Doctor Who fans are many and spread world wide, now sure getting Peter Jackson on to the show would I expect be hard, but there are a lot of famous, cool people to invite and some of them would accept. It might also be cool to get some of the ex-Doctors on the show.

Through a classified ad in The Times. Nice and discreet.
Seriously, the idea of a show just to confirm who's been cast screams of a.show that has become enamoured of it's own reputation. And we English love to tear down the arrogant.

It would cause outrage among certain older members of the fanbase. Best to announce a female Doctor plenty of time in advance IMO to get audiences used to the idea of one.

Or to whip themselves up into a frenzy With plenty of warning it would get any misogynist behaviour out of their system.

Whatever they do, please not another cringey live show. Doctor Who Live: The Next Doctor was pretty decent. It was only The Afterparty that didn't work IMO. The Next Doctor was just a pointless twenty minute interview with some random people and five minutes of Capaldi. The live aspect was unnecessary. They just need to announce it, no need for such fanfare. The Afterparty was an abomination. The new series' Doctor in Distress moment.

I think a surprise would be great. A surprise regeneration would be so worth the effort necessary to keep it a secret. Since the Mirror clearly has a source in the production then they'll probably reveal who it is ahead of time.

Since the Mirror clearly has a source in the production then they'll probably reveal who it is ahead of time. Yeah, I'd almost prefer him to go at the end of S10. That way they could air the regeneration before filming anything with the new Doctor apart from the regeneration itself. I can understand why they wouldn't though. Chibbers won't want anyone else doing his Doctor's first story.

Can't say I was a fan of that 'Stars in their Eyes' approach, so I hope they avoid that this time. The way they did Smith's announcement was just fine.

Not the way they did the last one! Is my answer to the original question.
