For all we know the character of Bill could be Muslim and if she is,who really cares? It isn't like Islam doesn't have almost a couple of billion followers worldwide and representation in one of the world's most recognizable TV franchises would acknowledge that fact. And as always what kind of stories does that allow the show to tell that it would not be able to tell otherwise? Donald Trump is evil? Maybe we could see an alien Trump? Ooh, I don't think we can do another Helen A in this day and age sadly. Not on broadcast television.

Yeah, the BBC would probably be accused of political bias...even though it's not our country's political affairs anyway! Nope. I'm sure there are those who would be up in arms they did The Deadly Assassin nowadays because the corrupt, degenerate Time Lord society has a Lord President and a shadow organisation called the Celestial Intervention Agency (touch wood), but a caricature of a prominent foreign political figure would be a little too much. Besides, it's a bit beneath Who's talents, Thatcher was at least an interesting woman to satirise and it was taken to beautifully new territory by Graeme Curry who had it be about a very adult subject matter -- forced happiness. The other chap strikes me as a bit boring to write from, honestly.

On a semi related note is anyone else surprised there hasn't been more South Asian (Pakistan/India/Bangladesh) companions? They are a larger ethnic minority group in UK than black people and I'm only aware of one such companion, Anji Kapoor from the BBC EDA's...

At a stretch I could add Tiger Maratha, an Indian, who supposedly had adventures with the Fourth Doctor (unseen) whose daughter - Priyanka, the Twelfth Doctor met in The Swords of Kali comic strip. (She would have made a good companion actually.)

In general, the less the show dwells on the details of a companion's private life, the happier I am. There have been some exceptions in BF's audios, but those did it the right way. The new series usually does it in a way that I don't like. (Season 8 being about Clara's boyfriend problems, for example).
The last thing I need is for the show to get into details of a companion's private life solely to poke somebody in the eye, even if they do deserve it....

I dunno, I think they did a fine job of satirizing at least the type of celebrity Trump is in Sherlock. I know it wasn't a direct satirization of him, but, to me at least, the resemblance was a eery. More realistically, though, I don't think it's too far out of the way to say we'll see some stories that directly criticize a lot of Trump's policies. The Immigration Ban, for instance, could be satirized pretty effectively. Or this wall we keep hearing about - I can just imagine what the Doctor'd have to say about that.

I was wondering how fans would react to a South Asian doctor, or even worse, a North American, perhaps one from New York City or Chicago. Or one like Radar O'Riley, from the rural heartland. I haven't read or listened to any of the EDA's with Anji Kapoor, it would help if BBC would hurry up with more audio book releases.

There would be criticisms of the show becoming americanised.

There are 1.6 million people asking him to be not allowed a state visit. They'd disagree with you. I'd agree with you, but... you get what my point is.

There would be criticisms of the show becoming americanised. The Doctor should be male and British. The skin-colour's irrelevant. I think the diversity should really come in the form of the companion, shouldn't it, though? Especially if you consider they're meant to be the relatable character? Don't get why people don't just think of that.

The thing is, people don't appreciate that the government are in a difficult position. They might not agree with Donald Trump's attitude but we need America's trade more than ever, so if we upset Trump we'll be in big trouble. Badly, especially an American Doctor. If they make the doctor female does that make Susan her own grandpa?
