Old Acquaintance is as good as anything I've heard this year and better than most things I've listened to. If this is a prime example of the kind of writer Mathew Waterhouse is, well, I need to search for things written by him. And please to any and all Big Finish and/or Dark Shadows creative team, please get Waterhouse to write more. Also it seemed to me that David Selby was in especially good voice for this. His voice sounded richer & stronger than it has in the past. I wonder if he has been doing a lot of theater work of late. Anyway, top notch. Haunting, lyrical and very, very creepy. He really is a great writer. I have all his books and they're all excellent. Hopefully he will continue to write for and record for the BF DS range. I want him around Collinsport for years to come. Agreed but please don't limit him to this range. I think his voice would fit right in with something like The Omega Factor.

I'm still haunted by "Old Acquaintance" after several days, having listened to it three times and still not satisfied that I fully comprehend. I'm afraid it's beyond my understanding. The syllables, the words chosen...creating a diabolic incantation.... Makes one wonder about someone capable of conjuring up such a tale.

Dark Shadows: Dreams of Long Ago: Cobwebs( Sebastian Shaw - Sometime after Dreaming of the Water) God, this short is trippy. This isn't a reading, it's a one-man play. With a second actor. I'm not even sure how to describe it. Sebastian's still dreaming, but no longer of the water, this time someone's been burnt. Exactly. A one-man play inside the mind of a madman. Well done all around.

I love the music and sound effects for all of these. But I've only heard three stories so far (haven't heard "The Reflected Man." It's interesting how the minimal use of prerecorded second voices is used; they music swells, the acting reaches a crescendo and the time is right for them to slip in a snippet of Grayson Hall ("Julia") moaning in "Curse of Sharafu, or a line by Jonathan Frid "Barnabas" in "Harvest of Souls." In one review of "Devil's Rock" above, someone wondered if a bit was prerecorded. Yes, I think it was, though I cannot remember for certain where I've heard it before. It's possible, though, that BF had it in its library of stuff they recorded and hadn't used yet.

If the sound bite (no pun intended) of John Karlen from Devil's Rock came from an audio, it'd most likely be The Rage Beneath or Kingdom of the Dead, at least that's my thinking. Cobwebs is a lot easier, the lines from KLS are obviously from Dreaming of the Water, the only appearance of Laurie Norris.

As you're a DW fan, I'd recommend his Blue Box Boy memoirs.
But if you want to try his fiction, I recommend starting with Sugar either in print or on audio. I loved it in both forms.
Sugar - a quartet of short novels by Matthew Waterhouse
Embracing science fiction, suspense and the supernatural, this genre-bending collection explores the contradictions and complexities of the human condition... •A man in a dead-end job finds his life changes by an encounter with his past •A stranger charms his way into the life of an attractive woman – but his motive is shrouded in mystery •In a bombed-out future, a young man nurses a very private obsession •A man growing old finds himself haunted by ghosts - but are they only inside his imagination?
Sometimes exuberantly funny, sometimes bittersweet, Sugar will delight both new readers and those familiar with Matthew Waterhouse’s novels.

I'd just come here to write pretty much the same thing, but you've put it far better than I. Extremely wild and creepy. As if Matthew M and David S had played to each other's strengths - the story seems to have been written especially for Selby to play, and to really allow him to flex acting muscles in only the way he can. Extraordinary and darkly wonderful! How lucky we are to have these excellent releases Yeah, Matthew knew at outset that David Selby would be reading it. So it was written especially for his rhythms and delivery.

Yeah, Matthew knew at outset that David Selby would be reading it. So it was written especially for his rhythms and delivery. Stories like this need to be tailored to the narrator. It's absolutely vital. Originally, for example - and not to make this about me, even though I'm about to - I envisaged Nancy reading Last Orders but Joe basically got the pitch and went "that'd be a nice one for Matthew to read" and suddenly you have a different voice in your head. Different rhythms, different cadences. etc. And let's face it... David's voice sounds amazing. There's something both comforting and distant about it which makes stories like this perfect for him. I think Matthew wrote a blinder of a story. Perfectly tailored to David's voice.

HAHA! I couldn't limit him to DS even if I wanted to (and I don't)! I don't have that kind of pull.

Old Acquaintances was an absolutely magnificent story and likewise with David Selby's reading of it. Extra points on top of that for the story managing to seem like it went on twice as long as it actually did, in a very, very good way - and for actually creeping me out. Amazingly talented, both of them. The music cues were totally spot-on, too. An outstanding production, sincerely.

HAHA! I couldn't limit him to DS even if I wanted to (and I don't)! I don't have that kind of pull. Now, now. We've seen your amazing powers in action. All you have to do is post a thread, "Big Finish, Where's The Love For Matthew Waterhouse?" and in only 3 days, there'll be a Matthew Waterhouse sale, a new range Dark Shadows Stories by Matthew Waterhouse, and a new box set with The Fourth Doctor and Adric.

So busy at the momment, but I managed to get two stories in last night.
Old Acquaintance - A haunting dark tale. Poor Quentin.
Devil Rock - Oh, I loved this. AND IT'S POST-BLOODLINE! I squealed when I heard Amy's name. Loudly. (Guys, MAGGIE WILL BE IN BLOODLINE!) Barnbas's pomposity and arrogance is brilliantly captured here through his narration, making at times it becomes painfully comical (at times, I liteally said outloud "Oh shut up, Barnbas") and it was an intresting darker, murkier reflection to Collinsport. Intresting how their playing with Willie and Jessica's relationship and whether or not she knows about Barnbas. Will Barnbas drive them apart? And the parallels between Willie and were painful, particularly nicely played at the end with the apparently 'happy' ending.
Only had a chance to listen to the first ten minutes of Cobwebs - but it's fantastic and I've been waiting for BF to get back to Cyrus. Christopher Pennock is brilliant, isn't he? ("Hello little spider")

Old Acquaintance - A haunting dark tale.
Yes, but there's this line -- Buzz Hackett at the Blue Whale telling Jonah of "his newfound passion for Broadway musicals." ROFL!!!

Devil Rock - Oh, I loved this. AND IT'S POST-BLOODLINE! It really isn't. According to the website, Devil's Rock is post Shurafa. Not Bloodline. There are no Bloodline spoilers therein. Trust me.

Precisely. Maggie told Barnabas at the end of Bloodlust to find Julia, while Amy told him much the same thing at the end of Curse of Shurafa. In the latter he remembers the former. Devil's Rock must be early in this journey, a Barnabas and Willie are not far from Logansport (which is close enough to Collinsport in the original series that Burke setting up a competing cannery could have been bad for the one in Collinsport). It does work with something said in In the Twinkling of an Eye, where Jackie Tate asks Jessica Griffin where Willie is. Now I'm wondering what the story behind Logansport is, and if there are dark shadows in the past of that town.
