My only issue with having The Early Adventures series on sale is that it's actually more expensive to buy the individual CD releases separately using the discount code than buying the bundles!!! As the code doesn't work on bundles, I'm sadly going to have to sit this sale out

I'm supposed to be saving money for my holiday (dammit BF!) but I picked up the few remaining Companion Chronicles I needed. Decided to leave the Short Trips for another time.

Great sale! The First Doctor's audio adventures are always a favourite for me. They are so interesting and evocative and capture the experimental feel of those early Sixties stories. I would heartily recommend the superb Sara Kingdom trilogy and the great Oliver Harper trilogy too. Oh, and the excellent Rocket Men and its sequel. So many good stories here :-)

Farewell Great Macedon (first doctor box set) is one the top 5 DW things BF have ever done. Highly recommended.
Also recommend the Transit of Venus (an early CC). My personal fave first doctor CC.

In my view, The First Doctor is the most consistently well-written Big Finish Doctor, so I would recommend any and every one of these releases to any and everyone!

Farewell Great Macedon (first doctor box set) is one the top 5 DW things BF have ever done. Highly recommended. Also recommend the Transit of Venus (an early CC). My personal fave first doctor CC. Agree, 'Farewell Great Macedon' is stunning. It was among the very first BF I heard and I did wonder (briefly) if just three actors could sustain such an epic length story lasting over three and a half hours. Obviously I needn't have worried - William Russell, Carole Ann Ford and John Dorney are superb throughout and they held my riveted attention over three evenings. And after hearing many other BF releases, for this fan of 'The Aztecs', Moris Farhi's masterpiece of power politics, time and destiny is still among my top favourites. (And if memory serves, I owe timelord007 for the excellent suggestion to hear this story.)

I've heard all of these before and until I just looked, due to the sale, I thought I owned them all. But to my surprise CC 5.01 is not in my "my content" or "view orders" lists. (and neither is 5.02 when I investigated a little deeper) Were those given away as freebie range teasers at some point? I simply cannot remember, I wish I could.
I only saw very few of the 1st Doctor TV stories, so I wasn't sure if I'd like any of these, but heck, it's Big Finish and they rarely shoot off any misfires, and these were all quite good and some excellent.

I've put two of the Companion Chronicles on sale that I was missing in my basket. I'm considering the Early Adventures, which I haven't dipped into yet. Which ones do people recommend? None of them have stellar reviews on **** ******, which is where I usually look, so I'm not sure I shouldn't just wait for a future sale on these, when I have nothing else to buy.

The Doctor's Tale is a great historical if you like that genre. As a range though they're all definitely worth getting, theres something there for everyone.

The Sontarans is fantastic. Rip-roaring space adventure with great performances and a chilling and ruthless portrayal of the titular villains.

I think my favorite of all the 1st Doctor ones is the Sontarans which was the last released and was absolutely excellent in my opinion. But I also quite enjoyed all of Season 1 with either Domain of the Voord & The Bounty of Ceres the best (ironically since I didn't expect that). The rest of S2 was okay, not my favorites personally.

The Bounty of Cres
(its very good but I can't say why without spoiling it)
The Fifth Traveller
(One of William Russell's best efforts of preforming and narration)
The Ravelli Comspricy
(A great historical with more then a touch of comedy)
The Sontarans
(I really like this and its rare for a 1st Doc because its full on action packed)

I'd recommend The Sontarans as the best one that they've done to date with The Bounty of Ceres a close second. I also really enjoyed The Fifth Traveler and The Ravelli Conspiracy although they're not up to the standard of the first two that I've listed. For Short Trips, so far I've really only enjoyed Flywheel Revolution. For The Lost Stories I'd recommend The Masters of Luxor. If you like a classic, moralistic sci-fi tale then this is one for you. For The Companion Chronicles I'd recommend: The Transit of Venus - Fantastic historical and there's something so wonderful about William Russell's narration. The Library of Alexandria - It's a pseudo-historical with some fantastic history, a great guest character, and some wonderful interaction from Ian and Barbara. Here There be Monsters - An often underrated story about Susan's place on the TARDIS with some great science fiction concepts. The Rocket Men - A wonderful story told by William Russell about his relationship with Barbara told with the backdrop of an old movie serial. The Suffering - A powerful and moving pseudo-historical about the suffragettes with a great dynamic between Vicki and Steven. Return of the Rocket Men - A powerful and moving story about fate and hope as told by Peter Purves' who's narration can do no wrong. The War to End all Wars - Another excellent science-fiction story given with Purves' wonderful narration. I personally wouldn't go for the Sara Kingdom or Oliver Harper trilogies just because while I feel that both had a great first two installments that they both have pretty horrible third installments, but to each their own on that one as I know that I'm in the minority on that one.

I added Here There Be Monsters to my basket before reading the recommendations here. I was looking at Quinnis because I'm intrigued about stories that "come before" the first televised episode. Any opinions on it? For early adventures, The Sontarans and The Bounty of Ceres seem to be getting the most votes, so I have to decide which one of those to get. I already own Flywheel Revolution, the two Rocket Men releases and Masters of Luxor. I though Masters of Luxor was perfectly awful - too long, too plodding, and Barbara's repeated expressions of foreboding got on my nerves in very short order. As I mentioned here, not long after I listened to it.

Then in my opinion, members of this forum are more perceptive and intelligent...! I've not heard 'Domain of the Voord' or 'An Ordinary Life' yet, but based on cast and authors alone my expectations are high. I'd recommend ALL of the others which I have heard, for these reasons- The Doctor's Tale - atmospheric Chaucerian historical, as good as the best serious historicals like 'The Aztecs'. The Bounty of Ceres - solid science fiction setting in Earth's future in space, but Steven and Vicki's past. Psychological whodunit. The Age of Endurance - 'Das Boot' meets 'Sink the Bismarck' in deep space, epic 'naval' drama of warring starships and almost family feuds. The Fifth Traveller - If you like the high concept stories like 'The Web Planet' this is for you; a world and its strange lifeforms imagined in detail and a mystery for the FIVE members of the TARDIS crew... The Ravelli Conspiracy - sparkling comedy historical like Donald Cotton at his best as the Doctor outschemes the Medicis and Machiavelli. The Sontarans - brutal and epic 'war film' on a distant world, the Sontarans at their toughest and the Space Security Service up for the fight. (The last two may be the best of their respective types.)
