I might have a go at the Short Trips material as it is the only thing offered that I don't already have.

Gah, that was a whole lot more than I'd meant to spend today, or this weekend for that matter. Small saving grace that I don't much like the Early Adventures format, so I was "limited" to the Companion Chronicles I was missing. Good grief

I'd like to fill out my Companion Chronicle gaps, but I've got plenty of other releases back logged to listen to, so I'll probably hold out until there's another £2.99 sale on the whole CC Range.

I added Here There Be Monsters to my basket before reading the recommendations here. I was looking at Quinnis because I'm intrigued about stories that "come before" the first televised episode. Any opinions on it? For early adventures, The Sontarans and The Bounty of Ceres seem to be getting the most votes, so I have to decide which one of those to get. I already own Flywheel Revolution, the two Rocket Men releases and Masters of Luxor. I though Masters of Luxor was perfectly awful - too long, too plodding, and Barbara's repeated expressions of foreboding got on my nerves in very short order. As I mentioned here, not long after I listened to it. Yes we shan't speak of Luxor

I speak of the Masters of Luxor with enthusiasm! As I understand it, this was an alternative story for the slot eventually taken by 'The Daleks' and offered a very different vision of 'Doctor Who', written right at the beginning when even the characters of the TARDIS crew had not been established. The Doctor, Ian, Barbara and Susan say, do and believe things in this story which are quite out of character - or at least, out of the characters they would become. I see it almost as a parallel universe for the Doctor and his friends; similar, but different people and not always as likeable. It was not the route eventually taken, as we all know (and that was wise I think), but for a single 'alternative' story I found it fascinating. Whether it would have worked on television in the 60s is another matter, but the vast, gleaming city on a barren world 'looks' great on audio. It's a clear religious allegory - and leaving aside Barry Letts' Bhuddist parables in the Pertwee era, that's unique in the classic era I think and I very much enjoyed the surprise factor of that theme. My one real criticism within the context of this story's 'universe' would be the handling of The Perfect One. It's perfectly obvious what he want to make him complete, so why doesn't the story use the word? We don't have to believe as he does to appreciate the impossibility and profundity of his desire - or how ruthless such a dream will make him. {Spoiler} The 'perfect' creation wants nothing less than a human soul. Whatever our beliefs, that makes Dalek dreams of universal conquest seem quite mundane and possible by comparison.

Definitely go with the Sontarans Ela (if you are only getting 1) While Bounty of Ceres was one of my favorites from the 1st Doctor EA's, The Sontarans is one of my favorites from the entire range tied with the Black Hole. And I just realized my two favorites from the Early Adventures were both written by Simon Guerrier.

I'm still saving a couple of Early Adventures but The Doctor's Tale is probably my favorite Early Adventure out of any I've heard so far (it also has one of my favorite covers).

Can you all recommend one companion chronicle? (Preferably one disc)

Can you all recommend one companion chronicle? (Preferably one disc) Of the two First Doctor sub-genres: Historicals: Mother Russia (strictly speaking it's a pseudo-historical, with alien content, but it's the history side that stayed most in my memory of it) Space Adventures: The Rocket Men (there are later sequels, but the first story is standalone)

Ela I know I'm late chiming in, but my favorites of the First Doctor Early Adventures are The Sontarans and The Ravelli Conspiracy, with The Bounty of Ceres a close third. You can't go wrong with any of them. 8doctormcgann Another vote here for The Rocket Men. A really great story, although I do think the sequel is even better. (But if your like me, you'll want to hear the first one first. I'm not anal about many things, but that's one of them. )

I preferred Return of the Rocket Men. But that's because I didn't really buy the premise of The Rocket Men.

I hate to give up on The Bounty of Ceres because it is SO good, but The Sontarans is probably slightly better. I enjoyed The Masters of Luxor, but I'm a big fan of 60's television, and I could definitely see this as a 60's serial. I was kind of fascinated with the direction that Anthony Coburn wanted to take the series with more high-concept sci-fi then the adventure serial that we eventually got. It made me think that Doctor Who probably would have been an entirely different animal if that had been made instead of The Daleks. Can you all recommend one companion chronicle? (Preferably one disc) If it can only be one then it needs to be The Rocket Men.
