Hey everyone,
THE DORK IS A LESBIAN. THE DORK IS A LESBIAN. WE HAVE A LESBIAN DORK. ATTENTION EVERYONE: A. LESBIAN. DORK.
I'M SO EXCITED!
And God, what a great way to get around viewers in for the 'sexy lesbian' (not saying Peral Mackie isn't attractive to some, but you know what I mean). YEAH, IT'S NOT HAPPENING, YOU BASTARDS.
Also - and I think it's important - that even with the best of intentions, people make mistakes. There probably will be mistakes along the way. That isn't to say we shouldn't criticise, but we need to keep this in mind - and that's not to say especially if there's anything particularly problematic or troubling, we shouldn't address it, but it's important to keep this in mind.
That's not to say, we shouldn't criticse, we need to keep that in mind. I believe 100% that Moffatt is trying his best with the representation that he's given us so far and it's been a lot better then other creators.
THIS IS SO IMPORTANT AND SOMETHING I NEEDED SO BADLY WHEN I WAS A KID. SO MANY KIDS ARE GOING TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES AND KNOW THAT THE DOCTOR WOULD WANT TO TAKE THEM ON THE TRAVELS. AND ISN'T IT ALSO SO GREAT WE HAVE A GAY CHARACTER WHO WON'T BE SEXUALISED? I MEAN, I LOVE JACK, BUT STILL.
I KNOW WE PROBABLY WON'T GET A KISS, BUT YOU KNOW, PHYSICAL CONTACT IS GREAT. JUST BILL HOLDING HER HANDS WITH A GIRL OR TOUCHING HER SHOULDER OR SOMETHING, THAT'S ENOUGH. IT REALLY WILL. DO IT. PUSH THE BUTTON. GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
I NEED TO LIE DOWN NOW.

Hey everyone,
I NEED TO LIE DOWN NOW. This is all I even understood from this post.... ...the rest is just jibberish to me, cause I guess I missed something, somewhere, sometime. Have a nice lie down.

I NEED TO LIE DOWN NOW. Neat. Nice that there's going to be a character on the show that LGBT+ kids can identify with. Looks like Doctor Who is going to be joining a lot of other family shows following this tack too. It's a nice trend to see.

It's a nice trend assuming that the writing doesn't make a gag of it.

It's a nice trend assuming that the writing doesn't make a gag of it. God, I hope not. It wouldn't reflect very well on the writing staff if they did.

It's a nice trend assuming that the writing doesn't make a gag of it. Apart from who she might flirt with from time to time, how does it make any real difference to the story telling?

And? I just enjoyed Zaltys, which has among its excellent characters a heroic gay alien werewolf. (Not a phrase I have often needed before...) {Spoiler} *And* he's a telepath! TV Who evidently has a lot of catching up to do on the diversity front if they want to match BF! EDIT: Actually, no of course they don't. Madam Vastra, a great character, well established and as diverse as it gets. So why all the excitement now?

Madame Vastra, a great character, well established and as diverse as it gets. So why all the excitement now? Well of course all of these diverse representations are great. One of the great things about science fiction is its ability to showcase the infinite possibilities of things... The great What If? And while a heroic gay alien werewolf or a "lizard woman from the dawn of time" (and her wife) are great, they are ultimately... Other. And I would argue that no matter how well adjusted, most glbtq people do not need the message reenforced that they are often seen and portrayed as Other. While I think that any positive portrayal of non-straight characters is a wonderful thing, being able to portray those characters without the need for the masks of makeup or allegory is another step in the right direction. A human from contemporary times who is also gay is a more relatable character to the audience (straight or otherwise) than most other "alien" characters. That relatabilty is one of the theories as to why the Doctor (almost) always travels with a companion. Just a gay girl and mad man with a box.

Didn't they at least hint that River and Clara were bisexual (well, as to Clara, only one reference to some female historical figure being a great kisser comes to mind). Then there's Vastra and Jenny. There was Captain Jack. Etc.
My intent isn't to rain on OP's parade, just to note that the revival series has done it a number of times now.

It's not like she's the first gay major character in TV Who. Personally, so far, I'm not a fan of Bill's, but that's because I'm not a fan of the afro hair style, I think afro hair style just looks a mess, I'm hoping Bill character is engaging enough though for me to see past the afro.

On one hand I get why people are getting excited, but if I may being gay is not an excuse for having a bad character so I'm reserving any judgement on how Bill will rank in my list of companions until at least we get two episodes. I really just hope Moffat makes her an interesting character and NOT defined by her sexual orientation. And you know don't shove it unnecessarily. (Basically don't have her introduce herself as gay or bring it up every five minutes and focus on writing a three dimensional character)

I chose more exotic examples of 'diversity' for my earlier post simply because New Who did the ordinary over a decade ago.
Captain Jack may wear high-tech gadgetry and be from the far future (and be fixed in Time now), but he's as human as anyone else.

I don't get why people keep saying Bill is the first gay companion. We already have Captain Jack.

I think the difference here is that Jack is bisexual (or maybe omnisexual), Clara would be the same if she loved Danny and Vastra we don't get to see week after week (however much we'd like to see her as an ongoing companion). The reptilian detective is doubly impressive because not only did she find someone who would marry them in the nineteenth century, but her former matchgirl paramour isn't even of the same species as her. Peace, love and the fact that skin or scales doesn't really bother either of them is rather sweet.

Hey, we all got likes and dislikes, I was actually thinking about this one, and I think it goes way back to my early childhood (aged perhaps 3) and for some reason I became very alarmed and weirded out by the cartoon "The Hair Bear Bunch".

I doubt it. There would be far too much pushback if they did and as I said before, I really do believe Moffatt is trying to give us good representation.

As Wolfie said, Vastra is a reoccuring guest character and Jack was only in a handful of episodes between 2005-2009 and developed further in a spin-off (where his romantic relationships with men and women, not just sexual shennigans, were shown). Clara's primary love intrest was Danny and her bisexuality onscreen was negated to one line. This is someone this generation of kids will have with them week after week
OH MY GOD, I'M SO EXCITED.

Did you cover in the spoiler section, though? I didn't find discussion of the announcement anywhere else, so I think this thread is warranted
