I enjoyed it. It was slow, but it set up an intriguing enough mystery to disguise the pacing. I don't think it would have worked as well had it featured a different Doctor and companion.

Have to agree. It only really works as a second episode. It may have worked with 7 and Ace. But... if this were - say - 11 and Clara, it'd be a bit bland.

I felt like Smile seemed more like "traditional"/"classic" Who than the new series often does. The first 30 or so minutes of the Doctor & Bill would have basically been part 1 of a classic 4-parter. That does mean the ending was a bit rushed but I would never call this episode slow. Give talented people interesting things to say and you have the purest form of acting. It is a feature, not a bug. Pearl Mackie is like a breath of fresh air in the TARDIS and Capaldi seems more at home than I've seen him. This is the TARDIS team I would have liked a couple of seasons with. Not 12 & Clara.

Working on a review, but it's a fair improvement from Forest, which I didn't absolutely hate either.
Strangely, I felt like this was one of the first time's in a while where it feels like I'm actually exploring an environment with the TARDIS team. The slow pace and focus on ambience and style really worked for me, and I actually got a little annoyed when the story kicked back into gear. Dare I say, it felt a little Classic Who-ish in that sense, taking its time to get you to know the world.

Expected emojibots would be a bit gimmicky but found them to be work well. Didn't like the doctor breaking his oath and the ending could have been better. Bill was great again. 5/10.

Thought it was loads of fun. What a good way to give a new companion room to breathe, by essentially making this a 2-hander for most of the episode. You have a bigger, more present guest cast then Pearl gets less to do...I think Frank picked the right way to do it here. The dialogue had some lovely stuff - nice shout out for Scottish Independence included. Capaldi just owns this role. Look at how he played the "he fancied me" line about the King made of algae. Then imagine how his New-Who predeccesors would...he's really like nothing else the show has had and I'm so sad we're losing him. The robots were wonderful - made me smile everytime they pulled a happy face and the $$ at the end was a real killer payoff. They looked a bit like the version of Marvin from the Hollywood Hitchhiker's I thought. And Ralf Little was in it! Loved the reference to all the other times the Doc has found humans leaving Earth on ships, the story's fully aware of its lineage going back to The Ark and through The Ark In Space and End Of The World and managed to give a nice spin on it. Very happy with the visuals too, I like when Who changes it up does an episode with almost exclusive daylight, not resorting too much to darkness for creeps and scares. I had a big, goofy grin on my face the whole time and dug it. Job done, Boycie. Can't wait for my figuine collection subsription to get me an Emojibot

It could maybe have used a few more minutes but if this ep was twice the length I'm not sure there'd have been enough material to stretch it out. And then you'd have to lose an upcoming ep as well of course.

I love that 12 referred to Nardole as Mom. I think there is so much there between those two and we have seen almost none of it.

Agree 100% I hope BF gets the okay for Doctor number 12 as soon as possible and I hope Capaldi & Lucas take several trips to The Moat as just as quickly.

Prediction based on a few things I've heard...Peter may be closer to the Eccleston approach of leaving the role behind and than the Tennant one of coming back twice in 6 years. Despite, y'know the inevitable "but Capaldi's a Whovian" I expect from a certain quarter in response. Only time will tell and I hope someone can quote this post and go "You were wrong" down the road. Matt was in The One Doctor so he's an old hand. The Nardole Chronicles would suit me fine!

If indeed that remains his feeling once some time has passed, then of course we all need to respect his choice on the matter.

Of course, though we hope to be proven wrong And though it is a thin end of the wedge, him being an actual fan may sway him in the long run.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Really enjoyed it until the pace picked up, interestingly enough: the ending seemed too rushed to me. Great set up, 12 and Bill were brilliant again, emojibots struck em as a bit gimmicky but they worked really well, especially as they aren't the real threat and the slow discovery of the situation was terrifically done. I really love the mystery about why 12 is "stuck" on Earth and his rebellion against Nardole gave me flashes of 3 and his occasionally petty tweaks at the Brigadier's authority.
I'd have liked a little more time on the resolution - I don't think the colonists will accept the "reboot" excuse for long although the shots of the boy being served by the emojibot is meant to give us the impression that things will end well. But I did like the nods to the future history of Earth as referenced by past stories and the first half hour was really good.
Not brilliant but more than serviceable.
