There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Watching it again and have gotten a distinct "Mines Of Moria" vibe off the sequence set in the spaceship: the tunnels, the treasure, the body on the bier, the book of records, the Doctor fighting with the Vardi over a chasm and then the battle with the unending horde of gobl- I mean, robots.

Agree 100% I hope BF gets the okay for Doctor number 12 as soon as possible and I hope Capaldi & Lucas take several trips to The Moat as just as quickly. Prediction based on a few things I've heard...Peter may be closer to the Eccleston approach of leaving the role behind and than the Tennant one of coming back twice in 6 years. Despite, y'know the inevitable "but Capaldi's a Whovian" I expect from a certain quarter in response. Only time will tell and I hope someone can quote this post and go "You were wrong" down the road. Matt was in The One Doctor so he's an old hand. The Nardole Chronicles would suit me fine! I've read elsewhere (on Gallifreybase I think) reports by some fans that A) They had asked Capaldi at a con if he would be interested in doing BF, he apparently said he'd certainly consider it further down the line, depending on the scripts, and differing reports that B) He wasn't particularly interested in doing BF at this point in time, and reportedly has strong views regarding merchandising and younger fans-i.e the implication being he might feel uncomfortable doing audios for a private company that might be out of the price range of younger fans (though I'd argue that BF and the 12th Doctor appeals more to hardcore fans than casual viewers anyway)...I'm going to assume the truth lies somewhere in between, for all actors even massive fans like Capaldi and Tennant it all boils down to scripts and scheduling, both did three series on TV and walked away happy, the audios are just a bonus that they shouldn't feel obliged to do...the classic Doctors aren't in the public eye as much, whereas Eccleston though Capaldi are all very busy and I wouldn't blame them for prioritizing TV/Film work with a large audience (and paycheck) over audios for a smaller amount of fans. Though poking around in the news archives on the BF website, I did find this: www.bigfinish.com/news/v/peter-capaldi-is-the-doctorMake of that what you will...

Smile reached out to 4.25 million viewers on overnight ratings. This time during series 9, with darker evenings and the lure of Skaro's finest, The Witch's Familiar found 3.7 million. To be honest, I was expecting less for Smile - there is often a drop after the first episode of a new series, especially one as well publicised as Series 10 has been. Also, it was a very sunny day, which tends to impact these things.

Shows how terrible the advertising was for Series 9 compared to this year.

It would be nice to think next week's episode could actually score higher - it looks like a belter.

Erm... 2000ad... Robo hunter volume 1. It does sound rather familiar in the set up. Plus, Verdus - Vardy? Hmm...

I think going back to the RTD format has helped considerably, and I suspect announcing John Simm's return is going to see greater viewing figures than had they kept it secret like they did with Davros in Series 9.

Actually it was the Rugby World Cup 2015 that made the huge dent in show's second episode (there was a home nation's game playing). They could have advertised it to the Nth degree, it still would have been 3 to 4 million. That's the reason why this week's story is up compared to the previous series.

Hello again. I've got my happy face on today. * As with the last story, Lawrence Gough's direction is great. The location filming really gives this story a boost. The story itself is okay, revisiting a variety of sci-fi themes. The interaction between twelfth Doctor and Bill is excellent. The Leicester City robots great fun rather like the Chumblies. Nardole is definitely K9 substitute except Nardole can actually make the tea instead of just telling you about it. Finally, has anyone noticed the Doctor has taken to wearing a hoodie or perhaps it is a monk's habit...(he has undertaken a vow)... *where's this from? (fairly easy)

Still not a major fan of the emoji-robots, but this episode was better than I was expecting (especially considering I wasn't a fan of the previous episode the writer did)...

I thought that was an improvement on last weeks. I liked the way it was shot, very bright and outdoors as opposed to a dingy location

I can do without the whole Oath/Vault Arc though - it'll probably end up being an anticlimax anyway. Fingers cross they stick the landing with this one. Clever or not, the past few Seasons were practically anti-climaxes in design. Enjoyed the Episode a lot. It did a tremendous job building up the location, inside and out. Liked the pacing, and found the ending well done; It wasn't a clean win even if it was quick, and it made sense in the context of the story.

That was a gorgeous location and one that I really could imagine existing offworld and in the future.

Thought it was loads of fun. What a good way to give a new companion room to breathe, by essentially making this a 2-hander for most of the episode. You have a bigger, more present guest cast then Pearl gets less to do...I think Frank picked the right way to do it here. The dialogue had some lovely stuff - nice shout out for Scottish Independence included. Capaldi just owns this role. Look at how he played the "he fancied me" line about the King made of algae. Then imagine how his New-Who predeccesors would...he's really like nothing else the show has had and I'm so sad we're losing him. The robots were wonderful - made me smile everytime they pulled a happy face and the $$ at the end was a real killer payoff. They looked a bit like the version of Marvin from the Hollywood Hitchhiker's I thought. And Ralf Little was in it! Loved the reference to all the other times the Doc has found humans leaving Earth on ships, the story's fully aware of its lineage going back to The Ark and through The Ark In Space and End Of The World and managed to give a nice spin on it. Very happy with the visuals too, I like when Who changes it up does an episode with almost exclusive daylight, not resorting too much to darkness for creeps and scares. I had a big, goofy grin on my face the whole time and dug it. Job done, Boycie. Can't wait for my figuine collection subsription to get me an Emojibot Still felt like it should have been a two parter
I'm not sure if you could sustain the threat of the emojjibots that long, without introducing another whammy.

The emojibots can realize that they can't fight unhappiness on their own, so they rebuild the Kandy Man.

I enjoyed the episode. The interplay between the Doctor and Bill was spot on. Oddly, the only thing i would have changed was the revival of the colonists. I wouldnt have had them appear. I would have just had the boy. Then the Doctor sorts it out and as they leave the pods start reviving everyone

I don't mind the pacing (I tired of the overly-frantic pacing the new series too often uses) and I didn't need the bots to be "scary" looking as some desired. In fact, the entire point was that there wasn't an ordinary scary-monster threat, which frankly I'm becoming quite sick of.
I enjoyed it. Though, the premise is pretty shaky. Humans send their first colony ship to another planet with super-advanced nanobots overseen by other robots, and everything is programmed brilliantly except that (1) the bots cannot distinguish negative emotions from disease, (2) the bots have no method of treatment, their only recourse being immediate termination? What? We humans are capable of some pretty dumb stuff, but you'd expect programming faults like that to be dealt with.....
And then the ending: a last-minute reset switch.
I ended up enjoying it quite a bit despite it not working terribly well if you think about it.
