The language of the future is emoji! The Doctor takes Bill to a spectacular city on a distant planet - but where are the colonists? A band of 'cute' droids hold the deadly answer.

Bit worried about this one. What I've seen so far, coupled with the author's previous form doesn't inspire confidence.

Well any worries about it being gimmicky were thrown away by those skulls. I hope it's an improvement on Boyce's last work (which was a great idea, but lacked a plot).

The trailer and plot makes it look and sound good, but... it's written by Boyce, which is a very worry.

Am I the only one who actually likes the idea of emoji-bots? Everywhere I look I see people hating on them.

But I'll happily be proven wrong. I get what you mean. Babblesphere (the Fourth Doc entry in Destiny of the Doctor) had a similarly "modern" idea that might have felt gimmicky and trite on TV but worked well in the actual audio story.

Well, I kinda liked that but the pacing was a bit slow.

I quite liked it. Much better plotted than Boyce's previous offering, and the emoji-bots were actually utilised quite well. My only criticism is the pacing too.

I enjoyed it (but then I enjoyed FCB's last one), but the robots weren't quite scary enough, to my mind; and Ralf Little was wasted - in the old days that'd've been a three-parter and he'd have had time to actually do something.
(And.. after the episode, what happened just before the Peter Kay trailer? Were they about to show something else and then switched?)

I enjoyed it again, the Bots were a bit tacky, but Bill's becoming a really good companion.

It was slow but enjoyable. Definitely better than Frank Cottrell Boyce's last episode. Whilst I didn't mind that it was slow, I do wonder whether it'll hold up well in rewatches - at least on the first viewing you have the mystery of the missing colonists to keep excitement up, but I feel it will lose that when rewatching. I guess we'll see.

really liking Bill, and the doctor I am warming too.....Nardole, is defiantly shaping up to be an android....touch of Marvin is starting to appear!
but why does every story have to be about utter nonsense (Grief as a virus.....what tosh), too much techno babble, reliance on resets yet again......
yet again terrible story but really like Bill.
looks like we are at the frost fair again, surprised the doc don't bump into himself......looks interesting but the elephant CGI was a bit ropey, or maybe its not supposed to be a real elephant?

Actually if there's one question I have it's that how did the Doctor prevent this from happening again? Sure, he reset the bots and everything, but what's to say that history won't repeat itself again the next time a person dies?

The robots no longer have the obligation to keep the people happy (as he wiped their memory of their purpose), thus won't start killing them.

Well that was...average? Certainly enjoyable, nicely shot and a interesting central premise, but it had pacing issues, the climax was rushed and felt bolted on (rolled my eyes at the sonic screwdriver yet again solving the issue at the last minute...really wish they'd find a way to write it out again...) and although I liked the emoji-bots design I don't think they looked scary enough, the episode was quite action light and I can see a lot of kids/casual viewers being kinda bored by it.
That said, the dialogue and character work between Bill and The Doctor sparkled (and wasn't as overwritten as last year), they are shaping up to be a very interesting tardis team.
Surprised Matt Lucas had such a small role, and the guest actors had almost nothing to do.
I think if the episode was just 10 minutes longer, it would have been improved-they could add a couple more action scenes thoughout the episode (maybe introduce the colonists earlier on and have a few 'redshirts' get killed) and the ending wouldn't have felt as rushed.
6/10 i.m.o
Very far from bad, with lots of stuff to like...but equally very far from being a classic.

Better than last week's opener, I'm still not sold on Bill. But as I'd rather not die...
