Steven Moffat has said that writing for one Doctor is much the same as writing for any of them, so I would think the way one Master is written is pretty much like writing for any of them as well. Meaning the material, the whos, whats & whys, in large part dictate the initial choices an actor makes. The Master is doing Master things, so all in the various incarnations are pitched at more or less the same starting point.

Indeed. For what it's worth, we didn't provide Derek with any research materials. He'd already played the part, and we very much wanted him to bring his take to these scripts. The only discussion we had was how I wanted the Master to be the Doctor Who equivalent of Hannibal Lecter (which tickled him, having auditioned for that part so many years ago).

There was a moment I wanted the Master to idly hum the brief Master sting from Mind of Evil, etc, but how do you even begin to explain that?!

After just listening to the first one, with thoughts coming later, there must be a second set in the works, especially with how much it seems Derek Jacobi is enjoying working with Bug Finish. Maybe a chance you might write a story for it.

Right, I can’t wait for that, once I heard that the War Master was in it, I was very glad that I preordered it.

Two episodes in, and this is bloody amazing.
I really like, from a metatextual perspective, if, say, one were listening to everything in chronological order, you'd come to this after the last War Doctor set, and be presented with someone calling themselves The Doctor, and you're left sort of thinking that this is the new Doctor... until he reveals who he really is.

Anyone else a fan of the War Masters theme music? I really like it No. I haven't been listening to it over and over all day long at work. Not at all.

I could go on about everything I liked, but I liked absolutely everything, so there I couldn't help but get all fanboyish over the ending, but its probably too early to start spoiling that. But it was totally unexpected and very welcome. Needless to say (As per Sir Derek's request), I'm so glad he'll be back next year. I hope he continues with Big Finish for many years to come... ...is it too soon to ask for another multi-Master story?

...is it too soon to ask for another multi-Master story? Give em a couple of years to get the rights to the Twelfth Doctor era. Then we can have a multi-Master story with Dreyfus, Beevers, MacQueen, Jacobi, Simm, and Gomez. The Six Masters.

I loved how the theme artfully blended the original Master theme with a quasi-Who theme that evokes the War Dcotor theme.

Is that the case? At one point the Daleks say they need to report to the Time Strategist, who (if I remember correctly) was destroyed in the fourth War Doctor box set.

Is the Velvet Smog here too?” ”yes, he’s disguised as the tree over there.” ”The one that’s giggling?” ”yes.” ”why?” ”No idea. Bananas I assume.” ”looks more like oak” ”him. Not the tree.”

The Good Master. {Spoiler} Another solid entry, hearing the Master infiltrate his way through a situation and the chaos it brews is great stuff. Love that his version of encouragement is to yell at them to obey. The Daleks using kamikaze and ramming tactics is a novel idea as well, something not really seen before except in Destiny of the Daleks.

Just finished, have the bonus materials playing now.
There are a couple of things I wish had played out differently, but on the whole, this was an excellent set that I'm very, very happy to have invested four hours of listening into. I don't know how a Volume 2 is doable with how this one was ended, but I'm thrilled to bits that we know there's more Jacobi Master coming in other series. Any Jacobi is good Jacobi!

Well, we don't necessarily have to listen to things in chronological order - it's entirely possible a dozen boxsets may have happened before the start of this one! Actually, that might be an interesting idea, each boxset taking place before the start of the previous one until we finally arrive at a moment just after the Master regenerated into the War Master.

The Time Strategist was {Spoiler} Left in the Shadow Dimension, but as the Daleks weren’t wiped out, it’s likley the Strategist was simply returned to its point of origin like theDcotor and Ollistra were.
