I think this is going to be a rare flop for Big Finish. I doubt a New Earth spin-off has much appeal, and the trailer just doesn't capture my attention at all. I would've said the same about The Churchill Years, but you never know. Churchill is at least an interesting character though, both in fiction and from what you're taught at school. New Earth is just our planet replicated on another planet years into the future. It's not all that exciting, and the trailer makes the spin-off sound bland (especially compared to the trailers for The War Master and Gallifrey: Time War, the latter which I have and the former I have on order).

I think you should wait for it to actually come out before you start making judgments. I think it's reasonable to make judgements based on a trailer, otherwise there's no point in a trailer.

No. It really isn't. You really can't make a judgement about 4 hours of drama based on 90 seconds of trailer. Anyway, the only thing which gives me pause about this range is the narration aspect of it. Like the Churchill audios, I feel like BF has to trust the strength of their concept and the skills of the people involved with the production. I maintain my hopes for this box set and remain convinced that this is one of those ranges where Big Finish can do almost anything they want because they aren't tied into something that has huge amounts of continuity attached.

A trailer is supposed to get you interested. Tales of New Earth's trailer doesn't do that for me. I don't see what's wrong with making that kind of judgement. You don't watch a film trailer and think 'That looks dull but I can't judge as I haven't seen the film, so I'll go see it then decide'. You just don't see the movie.

Also it is interesting that people generally seem to criticise others for having a negative response to a trailer, if someone says "wow that sounds amazing" you would not get responses saying don't make a judgement yet!

It really doesn't matter. Youv'e prejudged this as unworthy, so I don't know why you are even still here talking about it.

I think DB is right here - what's the point in trailers if not to give you a taste of what to expect and to tempt you into buying? I see people on the movie trailer thread getting excited based on trailers....why's that different and what's the difference in DB being underwhelmed? Only positive responses allowed?
If you're completist and buy everything or on board already, sure, trailers might be a non-issue but for those on the fence - especially with entirely new ranges - trailers and buzz are vital for pre-orders. Otherwise - as he says - why would BF make them?

Personally I find audio trailers pretty much useless and have never had one swing a purchase either way.

I’m not particularly interested in it either, I just find it rather presumptuous for someone to say it’ll be a flop based on their personal taste when it’s not even out yet. I’m not particularly interested in ranges like Dorium Gray or Pathfinders, just because I don’t think they sound like any good from the trailers I’ve heard, doesn’t mean they’re going to be a flop and a lot of people actually love them. Still, if it’s not to your taste don’t buy it, I know I won’t be, but I won’t be judging the quality of it based on a tiny trailer.

Yeah, most audio trailers seem to be variations on characters saying something ominous, followed by a loud series of bangs and/or screams. Usually with BF I have to wait until other people give their opinions, and even then I still stick to certain ranges.

I quite like the trailer. I wouldn't, however, say that I think this is going to be a success because I liked it, any more than I'd say it's going to be a flop because I don't like it. To do that would over-estimate the importance of my opinion more than a little

I don’t think it’s going to be a flop, nor do I think it’s going to be a multi-volume range. But then again I don’t think it’s intended to be. It’s Big Finish’s attempt to do some great, sci-fi world building using an existing world. In a similar vein to how Vienna has Doctor Who connections. Or even the Charlotte Pollard range.
It’s not for me, but I wish them the best and I fully support the reasonings behind it.

Trailer piqued my curiosity so if the reviews are good will likely pick it up.

I don't have any immediate interest in this (reviews may change that) but hope it still does well. Flops are rare for Big Finish and long may that continue.

Am I the only one whose criteria for ordering an audio production doesn't factor in trailers, art work or reviews?

Don't get me wrong, I don't wish for them to have a flop here - I just suspect they will, as I think it is a bizarre idea with very little to make it appealing. I'd understand the idea more if it featured a quick cameo from David Tennant.

I think if they'd built Novice Hame into a 10DA or something and spun this off from there then people here would seem more excited. Although, it's fair to say that this forum isn't exactly fully representative of BF's whole market, and young teens who grew up at the time or parents with children into the early new-Who stuff might really get something out of this. Hope it works out for them either way.
