I liked this. I had the pleasure of hearing this recorded and it made an impression. Very different setting, but effective

I generally like the subscriber short trips. I don’t have any others loaded on my phone right now, but at forty-two minutes I think this is a bit longer than most. That’s about the length of an episode of modern Who and thus it has the time to develop into a full-fledged adventure, rather than the more intimate character pieces I tend to associate with the range. Not that one format is better than the other. I like both of them in different ways. I do wish there was a way to get the Subscriber stories directly through the app. It’s my primary method of listening to Big Finish now and I always miss them until someone mentions them here.
I had never heard of Hi-Brasil prior to listening to this. When I heard the name, I thought of the country in South America. The name sounds a little silly to my ears, but I can’t fault the author for that. One can hardly tell a story about Hi-Brasil without saying Hi-Brasil.
Aliens mistaken for or pretending to be gods is very much a Doctor Who kind of story.
Good characterization of the team. “You cannot put science above life. Any life!” That’s a second Doctor line right there. Zoe and Jamie are spot on too.
Strong theme, nicely constructed, solidly performed. A great way to spend most of an hour.

A very Second Doctor story ('futuristic' base, science gone wrong) merged with a very unusual setting; an island literally out of the mists of legend and Time. The more you know of Celtic folklore, even if vaguely, the more this story will chime. I liked that this meant that just for once, Jamie was ahead of his genius companions and I thought even more could have been made of this. The 'horror' is properly horrific and our three friends work through the mystery in their usual ways, a very well written TARDIS crew. The Doctor remonstrates with evil and pushes people to do the right thing, Zoe is clever and also gets into a sticky situation and screams! and Jamie saves the day as a Highland warrior should. And Stephen Critchlow gives another excellent performance - and another excellent Doctor. I'm almost collecting his Doctors now via these Subscriber Short Trips, we've had the Third, Fourth and Second most recently and all of them so well voiced. {Spoiler} And the roots of Celtic culture turn out to be alien! The symbols, the legends of fairy-folk and even the heather!

Thanks very much for the insight - the flow of his readings sounds very natural when listening, so it's fascinating to know that it is indeed mostly one take. I will look forward to hearing the 'hmmm's and other Hartnell-esque vocal touches in September, if so. EDIT: I'm being slow on the uptake today... I've only just realised who the writer of the the next Sub ST is...

Is there anything more you that you can share about the process, or have you already said as much as you can?

Thanks. As far as the rarities, the only one I shouldn't already have is "The Toy" as it was "first released as an exclusive title on CD only for those buying the Doctor Who - The Complete History partwork from Hachette Publishing" (unless I bought it on its own already). I've been a long subscriber so I have the other four, but I may not have listened to "Sound the Siren" yet.

Do you think we will be getting any more short trips rarities as I really enjoyed the last set?

I used to subscribe to the main range, and had some short stories in my extras I could download from the site. How do I get to those in the app now? I don't have any short trips showing on the app, just curious if they are hiding out somewhere different than i am looking.

I don't think you can access the subscriber bonus Short Trips through the app, only by downloading them from your account where they are attached to the relevant MR release. I don't use the app myself but I'm sure I've read comments from those who do about exactly your question - no app access to Sub STs.

Correct, they're listed as bonus content on the relevant main range releases when you go to your account through a browser. You download them from there by right clicking and selecting "save target as" It's really frustrating trying to find them when you have a lot of main range titles!
