DOCTOR WHO - UNBOUND » 6. EXILEReleased October 2003SynopsisWhat if... the Doctor had escaped the justice of the Time Lords? "They want to punish me for being me!" All the Doctor has to do to avoid being caught by the Time Lords is work in a supermarket and go to the pub. It's a cunning plan - certainly far less dangerous than fighting the dreaded Quarks and all those other alien fiends. But just when everything seemed mundane and safe, alien transmissions, exploding poison gas, Princess Anne and wobbly trolleys burst onto the scene to ruin everything. It's a crisis! A fiendish alien plot! And the Doctor must use all the resources at her disposal to defeat it. She'll probably need to have a large vodka first, though. Written By: Nicholas Briggs Directed By: Nicholas Briggs CASTArabella Weir (The Doctor); Hannah Smith (Cherrie/Royal Personage/Ethel/Mum/Child); Jeremy James (Cheese/Time Lord Guard/Scarecrow); Toby Longworth (Time Lord 1); David Tennant (Time Lord 2/Pub Landlord); Graham Duff (Baggit/War Lord/Savoy Doorman/TV Reporter/Presenter); Nicholas Briggs (The Previous Doctor)

There a precious few good things about this story. They are the Weir Doctor being heckled by her previous incarnation (played by Nicholas Briggs), the Weir Doctor's introspection and the scene in the pub where the Weir Doctor is convinced a perfectly ordinary bloke is the Master. Let me spin this out into an interesting story free of humour derived from bodily functions, drunkeness and badly written comedy Time Lords.
The Exile Doctor (Arabella Weir) has regenerated into a woman to evade the Time Lords, hiding out on early 21st century Earth (2003, around the time the story was released). She's got lots of time to think, and is getting itchy feet. She knows she can't do any Doctory things, and begins to see schemes, aliens and mad scientists in the most ordinary of things, getting caught up with a conspiracy theorist (the Cheese character, only with a far better name and a Fox Mulder-like personality) to get her fix. This includes being convinced the Master is shopping at the supermarket she's got a job at. She's convinced her past incarnation is judging her, but she resists the temptation to actually get involved. The Exile Doctor does slip up, alerting the Time Lords to her location, and she goes under the radar again.
Eventually she befriends a social worker (the Cherry character), and the Exile Doctor finds helping the people in Cherry's care helps get her mind off the aliens and saving the world on a grand scale. It humanises her, and the Time Lords are unable to track her. They eventually find themselves in Cherry's care, and decide the Exile Doctor has learned her lesson and deserves a more lenient exile.

Too late regarding Unbound Exile. Already own it, though I haven't listened to it yet, I admit. If you imbibe have a strong drink before you do!

Is it really that bad?? Cheers Tony It's very lowbrow. If Viz did a sequel to The War Games, this would be it. It's got a couple of moments I like, Tennant's a laugh.....more than I can say for quite a few "better" stories that commit the true cardinal sin of being dull and unmemorable. Not one of the worst BF stories for me.

I'd rather only spend £2.50 on something terrible than full price ...and judging from the comments, I've only bought it for completion . Cheers Tony Brave Heart and Strong Stomach Tony

I am going to have to listen to it now aren't I? Normally I go with everyone's recommendations (which is why I have no intention of ever getting The Boy that Time Forgot) and I'm not a fan of the idea of a female Doctor but this ... has me intrigued ... so much hate for a title ... Cheers Tony

I've got how I would have tackled the concept over on the discussion thread for Exile. It still has comedy, but excises the grossout humor, along with the one called Cheese. The story as it exists would be more at home as an Iris Wildthyme script.

I've moved some of the relevant posts from the Series 10 sale thread to here (in case I've confused anyone).

Oh, this is one of the few BF stories that REALLY dislike. Even David Tennant couldn't save this one for me. There is almost no redeeming qualities about this story.

So ....
I won't be listening to that again! Wow, I wasn't expecting great things but ... flippin' 'eck Nick, what were you thinking?? Was this written after "Curse of the Fatal Death"? Talk about giving female incarnations a bad name. Take the worst of Benny and Iris, add a whole bucket of WTF (among other things), times the result by ten and it comes close to this. Oh dear ...
What was the reaction when it was released? I can assume Nick not being very happy ...
I am so glad that I bought the download instead of the CD.
I just have to go and wash my ears out ...
Cheers
Tony

What was Gary Russell thinking, allowing Nick to even turn in a story like that? (Too many late nights watching Men Behaving Badly videos I'd say!) I know different can be good at times, but still... For me Exile is the worst Doctor Who story that Big Finish have ever released, and a complete waste of a female Doctor story that the Unbound range presented them with.

I didn't really mind the Divergent Universe arc, it was just C'Rizz that I hated! Different was a word that applied to a lot of early Main Range releases, for which I give Gary Russell a lot of credit for... he just let Nick get away with a bit too much with Exile. A more serious take on a female Doctor story would have been just as much pushing the limits back in 2003. So I view Exile as a missed opportunity more than anything else.

I think the burping and the puking put me off a bit. It did have its amusing moments, a Mr D.Tennant had a few funny lines in particular, I wonder what became of him? It was certainly number 6 in ranking order for the unbounds for me
