I'm really new to the world of Dark Shadows, I'm only on episode 76 I was always put off watching the series because I was told it was very boring up until Barnabas turned up, but I haven't found that to be the case at all. Will '... And Red All Over' make sense to me at this point, or am I not far enough along in the TV show to appreciate it ?

Well, the audios are generally very good about being "stand-alone" stories so that people can appreciate and make sense of them without having to see the TV series - but "...And Red All Over" is set chronologically after Burke's last TV appearance, so it might depend somewhat on how a person feels about spoilers (if they haven't already found out some of what's ahead for the TV series from synopses)?

If you'll indulge me, I was doing some cleaning up and found some material cut from "...And Red All Over". Originally I intended to have 3 or 4 letters included, read aloud as things moved along, but they ended up completely killing the pace of things, so they were cut. {Spoiler - Letter 1} Dear Finn,
I’m finally a free man. I guess I celebrated a bit too hard in that bar in Boston, because I woke up on ship bound for South America. I’ve been down here for a few months, in Brazil. I gained the favor of the captain, because I was able to connect him with a business owner I know in Logansport, Maine. Some of the other guys resent me, but I showed them they can’t mess with me. That’s something I learned to do when I was sent up the river. I mean prison, not the Amazon. Anyway. I guess success really is a matter of luck combined with meeting the right people. We took a shipment down to Montevideo. That’s in Uruguay. I think I’ve made a promising deal. The Ink is still wet on the contract, but we’ll see how it turns out. I hope they stay true to their side of the bargain. I’ve got big plans. More soon. Signed your one and only cousin, Burke Devlin
{Spoiler - Letter 2}Dear Finn, Hello from Rio! The view is beautiful from the golden sands of Copacabana Beach to the black and white geometric wave pattern in the pavement of the boardwalk. I keep looking on the beach for the oranges of Magdalena, but nothing so far. Further down, there’s even a Devlin Beach. Okay, not really, it’s Devil Beach, but I can pretend. Round the corner is Ipanema Beach. And just like the song, there are many tall, tan and lovely ladies. But I’m not here for that. I’m here for business. Things are happening. And this is just the beginning. If my dad could see me now. The sky is blue, the sun is yellow, my caiparina is… well, it’s gone, and it was delicious, but it was green. The color of success, the color of money. Technically, the Brazilian Cruzeiro isn’t green like the dollar. You get what I mean. Money - I don’t care what color it is, I just want it. I’m coming back to the states tomorrow.
{Spoiler - Letter 3}Dear Finn,
I don’t know if you are getting these letters, or if you’re even reading them. Heck, I’m not even sure you can read at all, come to think about it.” (beat)(FINN muttering aside: “why that…”) “But I keep sending them to you in your house in the Black Hills all the same. Since my dad died, and aside from myself, you’re the only Devlin left. Sure, we have relatives back in the old country, but as far as us American Devlins… you and I… we’re about it. And you’re about as American as can be. You hunt, you fish, you even worked on Mount Rushmore. That’s how I always think of you - a crazy mountain man. Anyway. Today, I’m leaving the states for a few weeks. Flying south to Brazil on business. Thing is, when I get back, I might be getting hitched. Neither my fiancé nor I have big families or deep histories. She’s an orphan and I might as well be. We mean a lot to each other. And it would mean a lot to me if you could come to Maine for the ceremony. I’ll leave most of the wedding details to my fiancé, but I insist on two things. I know a boy named Davey, and I want him to be the ring bearer. My fiancé is his governess, and well, he means a lot to me. And you, Finn - I want you to be my best man. I’ll fly you out, I’ll buy you a suit, get your haircut, I’ll even get your beard trimmed up all spiffy. You don’t have to worry about a thing. I know being around crowds and people isn’t exactly your thing. But I hope you’ll do this for me. I’ll get you the details when I’m back in the states. Signed your one and only cousin, Burke Devlin.”
{Spoiler - Final Letter}Dear Finn, I’m writing this letter knowing you’ll never read it – (not that you read any of my other letters). I guess I really wasn’t writing them for you in the first place. Forgive the hotel stationary. It’s always been easier for me to think by putting something down on paper. Letters, math, currency conversions, contracts, doodles of comic strip characters. I always did love Spy vs. Spy. Anyway. You’re long gone, buried under a pine tree, which is now in turn, buried by a rockslide. You’re a real part of the Black Hills now. I hope you’ll rest in peace there because you were a crazy old mountain goat when you were alive. I see now it’s not my fault that you died. My mind is clear of guilt and psychotropic drugs. Most importantly, my mind is free of thoughts of revenge. …And the need to have more than anyone. I’m not the Count of Monte Cristo. The problem is, I’m not sure what to replace those negative feelings with. For now, it’s just an emptiness. Not the horror of a dark absence, but a sort of clean emptiness. A blank slate. Even back before the plane accident, I’d started to change for the better. But without Victoria Winters, I am directionless. I’m lost. I’ll never find another love. I’ll never be a father. I tell you these things because I can’t tell anyone else, and I know you’ll never tell anyone. Spring will soon be here with the waters of March. Everything will melt, like the ice in my scotch.
(SFX: Ice clinking in a glass)
I hope this feeling melts with it. I hope there’s something underneath all this ice. Anyway. (Forced cheer) Portuguese lesson for the day. Bossa Nova means “the New Thing” or “the New Way”. Here’s to the New Way, wherever that way takes me. Cheers.
Signed, your one and only cousin, Burke Devlin.
Some of these make references to a black and white motif, (Brazilian boardwalk tiles, Spy vs Spy) back when the audio was tentatively called "Black and White". After the removal of some Vampire Penguin jokes told by a much more mentally unbalanced Finn, the title we used seemed more appropriate. {Spoiler - The Ink}There were also going to be some hints of the Ink being interested in the Phoenix, that they could "smell" it on Burke. The Ink were to be afraid of the Phoenix(es) and wanted it/them destroyed. This is how Burke came to their attention in the first place. But in a story where it was to be ambiguous if magic existed or not, it didn't make sense to make this a plot point. All that remains is the suggestion that Laura's spirit somehow saved Burke from a fiery death (for her own unknown reasons), and Burke trying (and failing) to scare/distract them with a match. In my mind, that still happened, we just don't get that information. -Cody

Great to read these early intended plot/character devices! Thanks for sharing them, Cody! Yes, they could have worked, but I do see how you have a cleaner, tighter narrative without them. I think the audio works so well as is, and really would have been something quite different with these, and the actual final audio as presented is preferred. How nice to be able to read them now as 'deleted scenes'....like bonus material! Enjoyed this post!

Another good tale.More complex and dealing with post Bloodlust Maggie and Mitchell Ryan who is intriguing in the role.I think I need another listen definitely to work out the plot points.I may have questions
I have not heard Return to Collinwood and probably wont as i looked up the price second hand lol. Unless Big Finish secure the rights i have though read the synopsis does Big Finish intend to remain faithful to it if create their own version.Seems like using RtC they will trap themselves

It's long been the case that BF stories tie in to Return to Collinwood as a 'happy ending'. But recently there's been a few stories set afterwards. Were you asking if BF would record their own version of Return to Collinwood?

No worries.
I can't imagine there ever being a reason for BF to rerecord RtC. It already exists as an audio drama still on sale from people who presumably still want their version to sell.
It'd be spending money to get the same actors to deliver the same lines as they already have. And with fewer projected sales than a new drama would have as lots of fans already own it.
Vengeance at Collinwood has never been recorded though.

I think Amazon in the US has Return to Collinwood for about 1/3 of that ($25) for a new copy, also some used copies for even less. That's about what I paid for it some years ago, every bit worth it in my opinion.
