My big payday indulgence was the super deluxe edition of one my top 10 records of all time - No Other by Gene Clark. I remember when this was first issued on CD in 2004ish turning quite a lot of people onto it, I already had a few of Gene's records and he was always my favourite member of The Byrds on the early stuff. This is UNREAL though. Not only do you get the album on CD, nay Super Audio CD, and on silver vinyl (both with original insert and poster) you get 2 discs of sessions, a bluray which has HD versions of all tracks, a 5.1 surround mix of the album, the original 1974 vinyl master, a quad mix and an exclusive documentary by Paul Kendall (the director of the 2013 film, The Byrd Who Flew Alone: The Triumphs and Tragedy of Gene Clark). There's a 100 page hardback book. A 7" single of Silver Raven. A replica ad for the record. Even the session discs are on SACDs and include Gene's ‘Train Leaves Here This Morning,’ which he wrote but became an Eagles hit. It's a stunning package - exhaustive doesn't cover it. If you haven't heard No Other...I envy you - check it out. It's indescribable, there's psych, rock, folk, country, bluegrass, gospel and soul with a whole lot more besides - sometimes in the same track. A huge flop at the time for Asylum Records who had no idea what to do with this genius (they tried putting him in makeup and wearing glam clothers....yeah) it's legend has grown and grown over the past few decades. I wish Gene was alive to see it's redemption.

My copy of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind vol 1 arrived today.
At last I have the first 5 parts on disc, and as someone that’s been a fan since the mid 2000’s I never thought this day would come.
Can’t wait for Stone Ocean to start airing!

Kinda sad I can't share this with y'all, as evidently I got my order in just before the sale ended, but over the weekend Barnes & Noble had a big 50% off sale for the Criterion Collection, so I managed to (spend too much money) fill out of collection a bit -- this time grabbing The Seventh Seal, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, Rashomon, and The Hidden Fortress on Blu-Ray. My absolute favorite Kurosawa film is Redbeard / Akahige, but sadly it's only on DVD... really hope Criterion puts out an HD version someday.
Any of y'all have big Criterion collections? Any fellow Kurosawa fans?

The big pickup this week is this epic - and it is huge - super deluxe edition of Prince's "lost" Welcome 2 America album from 2011. Full recorded, produced and mixed, he moved on before bothering to release it despite a few of the tracks being marked as singles (and Hot Summer shoulda been a smash). This is STACKED. You get the album on CD, three sides of vinyl with etchings of lyrics and the great man himself on the unused side, a full concert from 2011 on bluray, a 32 page book, a lithograph, a massive poster with lyrics of the title track, backstage passes, ticket stubs, VIP and crew badges, replica of the setilist Prince printed off beforehand and probably stuff I'm forgetting. All in ridiculously classy packaging, as anyone who has seen what the estate has done with the Super Deluxes of 1999 and Sign O' The Times will know. Word is that Diamonds And Pearls is next up for the treatment. I'll be there for that! It's probably my favourite record of his last decade outside Planet Earth which I adore. I may be biased though as the residency for 21 nights in London for that was the first time I saw him. All tickets were £31.21 (to match his last album title) about half of what big artists were charging even then. Allowed me to be able to go twice and catch one legendary aftershow. Happy to say this has entered the album charts at #5. A decade old recording with song people don't know...and it's still selling. Augers well for the future of the estate's releases - there's an unbelievably small amount of live material out for one of the greatest live acts ever.

I’m going to wait a few days to get The Web of Fear and I’ll only watch it when I’ve finished The Enemy of the World.

Today's cool signed music thing delivery #1 Donovan has done a limited run of 200 CDs of his wonderful new song I Am The Shaman. All come with a signed, numbered print. David Lynch didn't just direct the video, he produced the record too - I knew that backwards chorus was him! Check it out on video if you like Donovan OR Lynch as the song is class and the vid is pure Lynch. Today's cool signed music thing delivery #2 Marillion's second album Fugazi super deluxe. 3 CDs and a bluray. WONDERFUL remix, great live concert from Canada in 84 and the blu has both of the above in super high quality AND all the bonus tracks from previous editions AND 2 hours of documentary just about this one record. This was signed by Fish himself, bought from his store. It's the last of the Fish-era albums to get the deluxe box. Only 2 of the Hogarth era ones to go to complete the era. I think whiskeybrewer and barnabaslives may be other Marillion fans here.

Today's pre-release date delivery from Arrow Video: 1968’s The Snake Girl And The Silver-Haired Witch, a fantastically phantasmagorical slice of twisted tokusatsu terror from Noriaki Yuasa who directed the first Gamera. Aaaaand. Cold War Creatures: Four Films From Sam Katzman. Packed full of 50s b-movies from the atomic age, the "gem" here is cult fave The Giant Claw. An American attempt at their own giant Kaiju....looks like the last turkey in the shop. Massive fun. Four movies, two books, posters, art cards, million extras (including Sir Kim Of Newman)...the works.

A day late from HMV but hey. Came this afternoon but I've been waiting "till the night comes falling from the sky.." Seems like I've picked up a lot this week which is true but it's really the way the release dates have lined up rather than me winning the Euromillions!

After the positive things that DU members have said about Clive Merrison over the years, I've gone and bought myself his seemingly most popular set. The Collected Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (BBC) CD Its included 12 stories that aired on Radio 4 during 1990-1991 are: - A Scandal in Bohemia
- The Red-Headed League
- A Case of Identity
- The Boscombe Valley Mystery
- The Five Orange Pips
- The Man with the Twisted Lip
- The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle
- The Adventure of the Speckled Band
- The Adventure of the Engineer's Thumb
- The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor
- The Adventure of the Beryl Coronet
- The Adventure of the Copper Beeches
Ooh...I wonder, which one is the most entertaining of that bunch. I'm definitely late to the party to partake in this one! When I originally got into listening to other BBC audio mysteries such as from Agatha Christie and Inspector McLevy around the time of 2010, my master plan then was to stick with the Big Finish version of Sherlock Holmes as a means not to double up on the same subject. Oops.

And the best news is, if you like them, theres tons to go through, the whole cannon and some original cases after that too! Hope you enjoy the adaptations as much as i have been

Oops. Between Merrison on audio and Brett on TV, I think they're the definitive Holmes'. There are obviously other great non Conan Doyle interpretations and productions in many media (and some real stinkers!) but for "the canon" those two nail it. You have some wonderful listening ahead! With all due respect to Nick it's why I've never been able to take to him in the role doing the Doyle material. He's better in the original material. McLevy needs more love, good shout!
