I’m buzzing with todays announcement. I never thought we’d actually see a Hartnell Blu Ray set and while I’m just a tick disappointed Crusade is a recon (and really hope at least the majority of Season 3 and 4 can also be animated so they can get sets) honestly everything else about this has won me over.

I'm not ashamed to admit that this trailer brought a tear to my eye. Having (quite literally) been staring at 60s footage on a weekly basis for over two and a half years , this looks ****ing stunning!!! Is it just me, or have they VidFIREd The Time Meddler this time? Because it definitely wasn't on the DVD release, and the brief clip at 3:15 sure looks like it has been! Honestly, with the quality the rest of the season appears to have from this trailer, I'm not even concerned about having two reconstructed episodes on this set. I'm sure some people will whinge they didn't wait for an animation, but I'd rather have these episodes as they are now than three or four years down the line with two animations. I'll happily double-dip for this one if I get the opportunity down the line! I still can't quite take in that we're getting a 60s season "so early" into The Collection's run. I want to say more, but I can't find the restraint to put the words together CAN. NOT. WAIT! to get my hands on this one! Just as shame I haven't even got the Season 22 set though, so who can tell when I'm going to get my hands on this one...

Publication date 31 Dec. 2025? Don't worry. It'll be out sooner than that. My guess is November/December this year.

To be honest, I'm disappointed we are getting a recon. A recon is always going to be second best and we will always know that the animation is coming eventually *. This is the BBC double dipping again
* By that I mean that as the animation technologies/techniques improve and costs continue to come down, what is prohibitively expensive today will be affordable at some point in the future -maybe 3, 5, 10 or even 20 years, but it will definitely happen one day.

And I've added 'The Storyteller' to Vicki's timeline. As well as pre-ordered Season 2 on Blu-ray! First 'Doctor Who' season with William Hartnell on Blu-ray! Great. Bit disappointed the missing episodes of 'The Crusade' aren't going to be animated, but at least Sarah Sutton is in the 'Behind the Sofa' items with Janet Fielding and Wendy Padbury. Tim

Hey! Season 2! Shame that The Crusade isn't getting an animation for its missing episodes but I expect the recon will be done with the same love and care as the rest of the collection. (And I'm sure it will include those lovely Ian Chesterton recaps as well.)

Tim I believe that’s down to complexity of animating certain scenes that have loads of character.

Or has that been resolved already? Tim

My only real piece of wariness for the recons is I hope they are in the style of The Web of Fear with full clip integration and moving credits and not The Underwater Menace That's fair. Given how the Restoration Team offered to produce a full recon for The Underwater Menace for zero cost and the BBC refused them regardless, I'll be shocked if they'll make the same mistake again. The way TUM was treated has been heavily criticised, and given that subsequent animated releases have also featured full recon options as well, I'll be genuinely shocked if if The Crusade is treated the same way as TUM. Plus, this set has to set the precedent for future Collection sets, and stories like The Space Pirates or The Massacre have no telesnaps. That would mean there wouldn't even be recons for those episodes, as there's almost no visual reference material. These Crusade recons have to be the real deal, if only to create an consistency for the future releases.

Part of me is hoping at least for space pirates there’s an animation since they could pull a Macra terror and make things interesting with the spaceship stuff and improve a story I find very dull. Obviously we don’t know if there will be more animations but that one and Wheel in Space are my top choices to at least finish up Season 5 and 6 for collection release

Very excited for this release. A season I’ve a lot of fondness for, a wonderful trailer and chock full of treats! Brilliant that they’ve managed an In Conversation with William Russell, who’s worth every penny. Maureen O’Brien was a revelation when I met her for the first time this year and actually let slip about Season 2, which I reported on this thread at the time! And based on the trailer alone, the restoration looks fantastic! What a treat we have in store.
I wasn’t expecting animation for The Crusade, so can’t say I’m disappointed at the recons. It’s always been deemed a difficult story, even for only two parts, and I don’t think it’d be cost effective to have it exclusively in The Collection, especially when the animated range is still very much a recent / current thing at the moment, even if it seems The Abominable Snowman is the last for now. Recons aren’t my preferred choice, and I admittedly struggle with them a lot, but I feel it’s understandable here compared to the disappointment I felt with The Underwater Menace release.
We may yet squeeze a third set out this year if Season 2 has a quicker turnaround for October and hot off the heels of that we get a new announcement for a December release.

Publication date 31 Dec. 2025? Common practice. It’s a placeholder. I would suspect a 4th quarter 2022 release. Or very early 2023 at the latest. Very excited for the set. The David Whitaker feature should be great. Behind the Sofa is always fun.
