The feature length JNT documentary on Disc 7, directed by Chris Chapman is quite something. It's got mostly everything we know already but to see just how empty his life was without steady BBC work was heartbreaking. It's very easy to forget because he was around forever but when the show came off air in 1989, JNT was still only 42 years old. Yet even after his successes over 20 years with the BBC he was completely on the scrap heap, unable to get jobs on local radio or producing regional theater. There's a really poignant moment where Janet Fielding, John's really good friend, remembers he asked her when she was an agent (she was McGann's agent for the TV Movie) to represent him and help him find work. Janet declined because she knew she couldn't...and didn't want to let a friend down. That's really quite harrowing. That's truly heart-breaking to hear. Do we know precisely why? Was Doctor Who the albatross around his neck, or was it other reasons? It's a bit subjective. He seemed to be the guy blamed for the show's 90s rep of being cheap, shoogly sets, "bad" lead actors etc....but given none of the praise for keeping the show going when others were giving up on it or massively increasing the ratings in the Davison era after Tom's decline, or even the rating's success of Colin's first year. His drinking turned even heavier..and it was already quite heavy. He kept trying to launch new things but just couldn't get them going. A sad watch but to see the affection that many who really knew him still hold for him is also touching. A lovely piece and it gave me an appreciation for the struggles JNT had professionally and personally.

Apparently it's already unavailable on Amazon, glad I preordered it straight away. That's fast. Having said that, I remember other times when a title has appeared on Amazon, suddenly gone away and then reappeared again. It might just be timing?, none of the other usual outlets I look at have it listed at all, not even as 'unavailable'.
And having said that, I'm also glad I got my pre-order in as soon as I read Davy's post! Yes, sometimes Amazon sell their initial allocation on pre-orders then get more in and the listing goes up for sale, down again, up again etc. Of course with this season I don't think anyone will be taking chances, or anything for granted. They'll be snapping them up when they're available that's for sure! Zoom, Zavvi and HMV will all be getting stock too.

I've been meaning to ask about that. Does anyone know why "The Dalek Tapes" was excluded from the Blu-ray release? I really rather enjoy that one and was disappointed when I couldn't find it on the Season 12 set. Yes, like other "missing" pieces from relevant sets it's apparently being moved to a set where it either makes more sense for inclusion or where extras are a bit scant. I could see Dalek Tapes being on S25 with Remembrance or even way back in S1 with The Daleks. It was made "in-house" so there's no rights issue unlike, say, Tombwatch which is on the original DVD for Tomb Of The Cybermen but the rightsholder wouldn't allow it to be used in the Special Edition so keep your original versions of Tomb, folks! But I don't have an original version of Tomb, just the Special Edition from one of the Revisitation sets. I did not know I was missing something. Till now... collection completeness levels falling... despair begins... idea forms... goes to ebay.... spends money... collection completeness levels restored... happiness returns... anticipates future conversation with wife...
Wife: What have you bought now? Me: The original DVD version of Tomb of the Cybermen! Wife: So how many copies do you have of this story now? Me: Well, original VHS, original DVD, Special Edition DVD, Target novelisation, script book, audiobook, soundtrack on cd, soundtrack on vinyl... I think that's all. Wife: No Blu-ray? Me: Not yet. Someday though. Wife: And yet I'm not allowed a new kitchen. Me: Exactly! We can't afford to just waste our money on unnecessary frivolities.

Apparently the official announcement is tomorrow for the re-issue. It seems the Amazon page went live early by error - certainly it did not come up by normal product search. I could only access it via davygallaghers' link.
Anyhow, at least it seems hopefully that the market isn't going to be saturated with copies. We should all do our bit and order a second copy to keep it rare eh?
Update: Zoom had it on their website briefly and 'appear' to have sold out too as the item has been removed. They had an ebay listing too and that has ended with 153 units sold via that channel. One person pre-ordered 5 copies and is listing them at £80 each. However, Richard Bignell via Twitter assures followers not to panic.

It's amazing how different things are for you guys, vs. for us over here in Canada. You've got all this hubbub, it selling out, talk of buying extra copies, it going for insane prices on eBay....meanwhile over here, granted we don't have the big box or art booklet in the North America release, but the original version of these releases are still on Amazon.ca for the exact same prices and sometimes even dropping in prices during Amazon's inexplicable sales.

Well at least it looks like everyone now gets the chance to add this to to their collections. Will stick with the copy I got first time around though, as I have Volume 3 of the Lost TV Episodes soundtracks reissue pre ordered for next month. Has anyone else been getting these reissues? Granted they are in a single spindle case, but then again they are compact and look neat on the shelf with the DVD's without taking up loads of space. Vol 3 has dropped from £35 mrp to £22.75 on preorder price guarantee on Amazon. That's for CD's of The Smugglers, The Tenth Planet, The Power of the Daleks, The Highlanders, The Underwater Menace and The Moonbase. A few more animated/semi complete tales than previously, but there's two stories likely to be at the back of the queue for reconstructions. I already had them on Audible, but its nice to get physical copies of the all the lost soundtracks without the extortionate resale prices of the earlier releases.

Great for all those who didn’t manage to get a copy of Season 12. It’s a brilliant season and the set is a real labour of love.
I am surprised they’ve not altered the set in any way, such as amending the art, but very fair to up the numbers in line with the other releases, which have all proven to be very popular.

As long as they've altered a couple of the blu-rays for this re-release, I'm happy! Sontarans in one ear only is a bit trying!
Yes, great news, these really are very special sets for any Classic Who fan and S12 is phenomenal.

That was even quicker than Amazon Regards mark687 Amazon went live too soon rather than selling out (it's still there now), but honestly...it's going to make little difference in a week or two at best when this is again sold out all over the shop. People would have to be nuts to rest on their laurels and not pre-order it this time if they really want it.

While taking a look at the S12 situation, I noticed that Argos have 'limited stock' of Jon Pertwee Season 10 again at the usual £40.
It's been OOP everywhere for months so if anyone missed out, this is your chance!

I thought they were digital all across the board, looks like I'll be importing this one.

I wonder what bearing this has had on each set falling so much in price during the pre-order period. As I say, I already had Audible editions, as it was the reason for myself getting an Audible sub in the first place, when the CD's were out of print (Amazon bought the publishing rights when the BBC commercial arm went defunct). On another note, Audible are releasing The Trial of a Timelord target novelisation readings, as a set for one credit, in April. Sometimes it makes good sense to buy DRM access over physical media - I have all previous Target Collections they have released.
