Fan Fiction through and through.
The best of the Peladon stories in a blender with a surprise dash of a 4th Doctor favourite tale.
However Jenny Agutter's delivery is terrible and really off putting though.
Erimen's era ends with her married off but in a position of authority in a society she understands, so she meets her intended Destiney just in the stars of the future, not the sands of ancient Egypt.

This was interesting for me. I had no idea it was Erimem's exit story when I listened to it. I enjoyed the furst three episodes but the ending was at odds with how the character of Erimem was, and indeed still is, in my head. Ever since she got taken on as a companion, I had wondered about her leaving. I wasn't bothered as long as it was right for her. As a joke in an interview I mentioned something like "as long as they don't Leela her and marry her off to somebody she just met"... which is what happened. Thing is, I completely get why this was the choice taken. It's just not the choice I would have taken for her. I never thought it was her destiny to rule. I always thought it was her destiny to lead. I still think that. It's a subtle difference but I think it's an important one. She didn't want to be Pharaoh but she was willing to stand at the head of an army and lead them into battle. In the books we've had her do things like take command of a space freighter full of refugees. She usually takes the lead in her group of friends when there's trouble - but when there's no hassle she's happy to chill either with Peri and the Doctor in the audios or in the books with Andy, Helena and Ibrahim. I don't think ruling is her destiny - leading is. However, BF chose a different path and I have no problem with that. Different creatives see things different ways and each vision is as valid as any other. I would just have taken things differently. As I recall, I pitched a box set or short series for Erimem where the marriage didn't happen and she wound up representing Peladon at the Federation... which wound up with her going from low-level agriculture commissioner to leading the Federation fleet into battle. Nothing came of it but I did pinch a wee bit of it for my short in the Into the Unknown anthology. I really have to repeat, I have no beef with the way BF went with ending Erimem's run. I would just have done it differently... and I would have really enjoyed seeing how Gary Russell's plan of moving Erimem on to travelling with Sixie worked out.

Now that would've been brilliant!
Thank as always for your creation and your in depth thoughts on her journey.

Thanks for your comments, iainmclaughlin. It was an enjoyable story and I understand the choices that were made, but I was kind of disappointed that was the way Erimem's journeys with the Doctor and Peri ended.

I would just have done it differently... and I would have really enjoyed seeing how Gary Russell's plan of moving Erimem on to travelling with Sixie worked out. That would have been very interesting. I loved Erimem, she was fitting in really well with the Fifth Doctor and Peri so it was a pity to see her depart, especially as not long after BF decided to give the Fifth Doctor Thomas Brewster as a companion!!! (?)

(?) One of the things I enjoyed most about Erimem's time on the TARDIS was what it did for Peri. It really gave Peri a chance to develop and grow as a character. One of the first things Gary and I talked about when writing The Eye of the Scorpion was that Peri should be a bit stronger than she was on TV. Giving her Erimem to bounce against and react to was really good for Peri and Peri was really good for Erimem as a character. I loved the dynamic they had with the Fifth Doctor. It actually gave us a different look at that Doctor, too. It was the first time he'd had a really contented crew who wanted to be there. I like to think there are many untold adventures for them we just haven't heard or read yet.

I would have no complaints with a 5, Peri and Erimem box set of new adventures.

Decent audio drama but never hit it's potential, it all felt a bit "meh" especially the climax, i like iain mclaughlin idea better & it would've improved the ending i think & given Erimem a more fitting arc.
I'd rate this one a 6/10.

I would have no complaints with a 5, Peri and Erimem box set of new adventures. I'm not sure where BF stand with using Erimem these days. I'd have to check the contracts. However, if they ever wanted to use the character again, I would okay it in a heartbeat if any okay from me was needed. Incidentally, if I have any Erimem news... such as the short stories that are currently available free on the Thebes Publishing website or any of the other projects we've got bubbling... would it be appropriate to mention them in the general Doctor Who thread below or are they too far off-topic for this board? I like it here and I don;t want to rock any boats so I'm throwing the question out to the hive mind.

No problems at all Iain, any news is very welcome and if it's too far off topic we can always move it to a more appropriate section. We really appreciate the time you spend here. Cheers Tony

What a pleasure this thread is to read. Very interesting to read of the plans for Erimem. I always felt that she and Peri made a really good TARDIS team with the Fifth Doctor - they give him a hard time and sometimes gang up on him, but there's a genuine sense of love there underneath it all. I was very sad to see Erimem go, but this is a fine story nonetheless. Bitter/sweet, perhaps.

Aside from maybe The Trial of a Time Lord, she's a really static character during her brief time on television and it's great to see her grow between Planet of Fire and The Caves of Androzani. She seems younger here than she does during her adventures with Sixie. It's been a great touchstone to writing her character at the opposite end of her time with the Doctor, closer to Trial.

On the meh side. Sekhmet never really made much of an impression safe being an ominous voice, but the rest of the supporting characters were fleshed out well. Erimem's departure I'm not entirely sold on but her last scene with the Doctor and Peri was well down. A decent exit for her.

Erimem...near the top (alternates) of my wish list for a CC starring Caroline (more wishful thinking) or at the least a Short Trip.

The Peter,Peri and Erimem are amongst my favourite of the range i just hope she managed to progress Peladon in a good way as i always get the feeling Peladon is stuck in some kind of time warp as its society and environment always appear even after generations have come and gone to remain the same

Is it my dodgy ear or is the deceased ambassador from Mars played by Nicola Bryant?
