There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

On 10th December 1966, Patrick Troughton's first story, Power of the Daleks aired, to a viewership of 7.8 million and an AI of 47 ( I've a feeling the mark scheme was harder back then). 11 years later, Sunmakers part three was broadcast, garnering 8.9m viewers and an AI of 68. I think so, some of the scores seem very low for what remained popular programmes by viewer numbers.
But there was also much genuine dissatisfaction at the first regeneration. From the notes etc. on the blu-ray, there was a lot of 'This is the end of Doctor Who / it'll never be the same again / bring back Bill' etc. etc..
'Power of the Daleks' is by any standards a terrific story; great script, great cast and a chilling plot. 'I am your ser-vant.' And the surviving fragments are just long enough to show it was very well made too; 'Ben, Polly... meet the Daleks.'
Only three years into 60 years and some of the fans were already having a big hissy fit! If they'd had hashtags back then, #notmyDoctor would certainly have been trending. ![:))](//storage.proboards.com/6343532/images/FP0kBuboDlADmMfidske.gif)
I can’t find it at the moment but there’s a newspaper clipping from December 1963 where someone complains that the second episode of Unearthly Child wasn’t as good as the first one. Bloody fans! 😂

I saw 'An Unearthly Child / Tribe of Gum' for the first time in a special (and rare) repeats season for one of the anniversaries (30th?) I was enthralled by the first episode and thought - no wonder 'Doctor Who' was such a success. Then I saw the next 3 episodes and thought - thank Davros for the Daleks or 'Doctor Who' would have been binned before I was old enough to watch it! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/6343532/images/mW7FMmAyG_vqxkNOJyyh.gif)

On 11 December 1965, Doctor Who faced a Counter Plot, watched by a whopping 9.9 million viewers, with an AI of 53.
It occurs to me, did viewers back then even know how long an individual story would be? Presumably lots of people were expecting this story to wrap up in time for Christmas

Presumably lots of people were expecting this story to wrap up in time for Christmas I guess in the era of stories having an umbrella title with parts, you could make a guess how long each would be but in the Hartnell era with individual episode titles? Sometimes it must have been a wild guess if certain eps even were a new start or a continuation. And not quite connected but I saw someone ask elsewhere if the AI system was different then, hence low scores in the classic era. Yes indeed - it used to be BARB (who still collate ratings) but they stopped in 2002. The ones we see now are BBC solicited and independently conducted with a different measuring system.

12 December 1964 is The End of Tomorrow! Otherwise known as episode 4 of the Dalek Invasion of Earth.
Watched by a stonking 11.9 million, with an AI of 59, Dalekmania was clearly in full swing.
Also, clearly December means Daleks. Every year from 1963 to 1966, we had Daleks in December.

On 13 December 1975, 11.4 million watched episode 4 of the Android Invasion. AI figures are sporadic for this era and none is recorded for this episode.
Five years later, a paltry 5.4 million saw the final part of State of Decay, with an AI of 69. Buck Rogers was clearly still wooing audiences to ITV.

Packed day today. On 14 December...
In 1963, The Fire maker concluded the first ever Doctor Who story, watched by 6.4m with an AI of 55.
In 1968, 7.2m watched episode 7 of The Invasion. AI was again 55.
Finally, in 1988, it was Episode 1 of The Greatest Show in the Galaxy. Watched by merely 5.0m, with an AI of 68.

50th Anniversary of the broadcast of "The Time Warrior". So that's 50th Anniversary of the introduction of Sarah Jane Smith. ALSO: 20th Anniversary of 8th Doctor Main/Monthly Range "Scherzo". PHEW ! ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/6343532/images/ZBDvOFPmQgNwxFXLpuoD.gif)

Beat me to the punch! Indeed, episode 1 of the Time Warrior was aired today, with 8.7 million viewers and an AI of 59.
Six years later, Nightmare of Eden episode 4 was watched by 9.4m with an AI of 65. Got to admit I'm a bit surprised to see this as the more popular of the two episodes.
Interestingly, both stories were directed by Alan Bromly. These were his only two stories, meaning his first and last Doctor Who episodes both aired on the same day, six years apart.

I suppose since 1979 was a free ratings hit for Who and the Beeb overall it's not too unusual that Nightmare did so well. The ITV strikes meant that the first half of S17 had insane, unopposed numbers while the second half of the season was against an ITV off strike but with no time to make very much in the way of content. Funny to think, without context, that stories like Eden, Creature From The Pit and Horns Of Nimon had ratings far, far better than anything in S18 just a year on with some far more popular stories like Warrior's Gate, Keeper Of Traken and Logopolis.

A question which BF need not have asked. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/6343532/images/mW7FMmAyG_vqxkNOJyyh.gif)
Best story with Sarah Jane, here's a clue: 'I am Davros! I am your creator!'
If we give some of the others a sporting chance by saying best story for each Doctor with Sarah Jane, then I can vote for 'Invasion of the Dinosaurs'. Yes I have seen the T-Rex but so what? ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/6343532/images/IwGTjEvWiMqDCgEk5m52.gif) It's a great story full of intrigue that holds up over all six episodes, excellent cast and very well filmed in London. And when I was aged 10 all those years ago, it never occurred to me that any of the dinosaurs (even the T-Rex!) might look a bit dodgy. I was the target audience, and I loved it!

16 December 1967 saw 7.5 million people watching episode 6 of The Ice Warriors. AI was 51.
11 years later, 9 million watched episode 4 of The Androids of Tara, with an AI of 66.
I think sometimes we forget just how popular Tom was. His era (final season aside) is currently knocking it out of the park compared to other Doctors.

On this day in 1966, Frazer Hines made his debut in episode 1 of the Highlanders, watched by 6.7m with an AI of 47.
17 December 1977 saw the concluding episode of The Sun Makers. Audience was 8.4m and AI was 59, both a slight drop from the previous week.
