So odd discussion that I'm sure has been had before but couldn't find.
I'm going on a roadtrip with a friend of mine in a couple weeks and I've been given drive and DJ duties. I told her from the outset what it'd entail and she's all on board so here's my question:
What Doctor Who boxsets/releases are best for a 4 to 5 hour both ways trip for a newbe? I'm currently listening through the Companion Chronicles but I've already decided that's a hard no because of the unique format. I'm thinking about The Fourth Doctor Lost Stories and the first season of Fourth Doctor stories or the first Hinchcliffe boxset. Would those work?

Dark Eyes? You’d probably need to give a bit of background beforehand though.
EDAs series 1? They’re pretty self explanatory.
Fourth Doctor stuff would definitely work though.
Solo Doctor MR releases? Stuff like Master or I.D. could work, as could the Eighth Doctor/Mary Shelley trilogy from 2011.

Your picks for the Fourth Doctor are all very good choices. If you're looking for recommendations on the other Doctors, I'd say for the Fifth Doctor, Spare Parts and The Eye of the Scorpion might be good starting points. For the Sixth Doctor, you could definitely start with The Marian Conspiracy or Criss-Cross, and while I'm only about three episodes in at the moment, Iron Bright seems like a good entry point too. The Seventh Doctor, Ace, and Hex stories might be a good jumping on point for the Seventh Doctor, but another good story to add might be The Fires of Vulcan. The Eighth Doctor has three really accessible points, but I'd say Storm Warning and The Chimes of Midnight are the most essential Eighth Doctor listens for a newbie. And, of course, the Tenth Doctor Adventures are all pretty accessible to new listeners as well.
Hope that helps!

My thoughts are that the 70s her era (huge age gap in this friendship) so the Teatime in 197x feel of The Lost Stories and FDAs would be perfect.

For a different kind of 70s, there's always Horror of Glam Rock! Those early one-hour EDAs are great even if you know nothing about the show.
But the first season of FDAs are also a good fit - quick stories, all consistently good quality.

The right amount of nostalgia with both Kaldor and Sutekh returning with amazing originality with The Crownmarsh Experiment, The Bad Penny, The Shadow of London and The Mind Runners/The Demon Rises(With a very Blade Runner feel to it) are among the best of Fourth Doctor material out there.

Making proper suggestions would really depend on whether your friend has seen any Doctor Who before, and whether their experience includes Classic series, New Series, or both.
But otherwise:
- The Rocket Men (CC)
- Peri & the Piscon Paradox (CC)
- UNIT (New Series), either Entinction (s1) or Silenced (s3)
- 10th Doctor Adventures (either set)
- Classic Doctors, New Monsters (set 1)
- Cold Fusion (if they're a solid fan of the classic series)

It's not the end of the world if a new listener chooses not to try out a full-length Classic era Main Range release as a first. That's why anthologies have a variety of stories, such as Breaking Bubbles (which I fully recommend to all). There are a number of particular releases that I do want to recommend, so I'm gonna do that on a separate post. Well, let me just say, to begin with, that Spare Parts and Jubilee are definitely a must because they feature two iconic villains.
For the New Series range, I'd definitely go for both Tenth Doctor Adventures Volumes 1 and 2, as well as The War Doctor: Only the Monstrous, The Lives of Captain Jack, Classic Doctors, New Monsters Volume 2, The War Master: Only the Good, The First Doctor Adventures Volume 1, The Diary of River Song Series 3, The Tenth Doctor Chronicles Volume 1 (?), and also UNIT: Cyber-Reality.
With Torchwood, I'd pick The Conspiracy, One Rule, The Victorian Age, Broken, Torchwood One: Before the Fall, and most of all the entire Series 5 (Aliens Among Us).
More to come!

I can't think of anything better for a road trip than a bunch of Fourth Doctor and Leela adventures... they are easily accessible and very good.

The Excelis trilogy. I'm the only one who seems to consider it a real classic set of BF stories - but they're diverse and wonderful. And they established the multi-Doctor trilogy idea a decade before the MR did.

They're good, theyve not got any continuity required and you'd get to sample 3 Docs and they're cheap - sounds perfect for newbies to me! I never recommend the "best" - the acknowledged classics. Why start at the top then there's only one way to go?

Thing about those, being download only and having less than no room to store CDs, I couldn't even get the final part of the story.
