Just firing up the headphones, it seems ages since I last listened to a release, in effect it has been a couple of days, the increased output of BF over the last couple of months as made me glued to my headphones how strange now that I do not have this draw due to catching up with most of the main ranges and sub ranges. Oh well bliss for a couple of hours then.

This is the first MR release I have got when it came out. I am now officially caught up with the main range, having started collecting with Sirens of Time in 2009 and now owning every release. I don't even want to think about how much moeny I have spent.

I enjoyed this; it took a little while to get to full steam for me but it had some decent ideas

This would have made a great comic strip for Titan or DWM, then again Ian Edginton does write a lot of comics. If DWM got away with opening one of their strips with a kid giving off a slasher smile, then a part-flesh, part-ice Jotunn would be no problem. There could have been a great centerfold for the booklet, except that went out several years ago. It was interesting hearing Louise Jameson talk about the logistics of directing a full cast. The "so and so is lovely to work with/nice" was largely restricted to Louise Jameson and Colin Baker on Miranda Raison. There was even a director cameo with Louise as the Shaman
Favorite line (for context, someone is holding a gun towards the Doctor and Macht): MACHT: Where’d you get the gun, anyway? I won’t have guns here. DOCTOR: Isn’t this Arizona? I thought they gave them away with breakfast cereal.
And if the Doctor has never found the kitchen, the food machine has gone and Tegan and Turlough never told him where they got their food from in The Five Doctors.

Fun release. Colin Baker and Miranda Raison really brought their A-game, and hearing Louise Jameson was a pleasant surprise. The retelling of the Viking story was a joy in itself. I was also surprised by the twist at the end of part 3--I hadn't been paying attention to how many parts I was through and thought I was at the end of the story, until the twist.
It's just such a shame that Big Finish insists on hiring (or directing, not sure) its actors to do god-awful American accents, and even more surprising that they still do so this many years since the Yosemite Sam-fest that was Minuet in Hell. I'm not from the South/southwest, not even American, but oh lord it's cringe-inducing.
Still. Sixie is always lovely, and I've thoroughly enjoyed Mrs Clarke as a companion. Hopefully there are many more stories to come with this pair.

I liked this and felt Louise did well and I thought Ian Edginton told a good story. Thoughts here

Anyone else (other than me) think the cover art is bit wrong? Miranda Raison's character appears dressed in modern day attire, which could be OK, except the top she's wearing would I think occasionally show off her belly as she moved about, that really doesn't fit with her character at all, I think she'd be horrified of the idea of her being so exposed.

I'm not from the South/southwest, not even American, but oh lord it's cringe-inducing. I suspect that the problem lies in the difference between rhotic and non-rhotic accents. You'd probably need a workshop (as was done for the Kraals) for actors to get it right. A case in point is in the extras for UNIT:Dominion, when the guy who voices the American officer (a character admittedly saddled with some stereotypical and unconvincing dialogue, such as the adverbial use of "plum") talks about how he went to a boarding school in America, which is why he was chosen to play an American. Sadly, you wouldn't know from his performance. EDIT: jasonwardYeah, I found that odd too. I'm bothered by the idea that companions from the past automatically adapt to 21st century sensibilities. I think Charley hit a good balance, in that regards (not to mention she was something of a rebel.)

Some interesting notes, this story was initially titled Snowblind. Whether the title changed because Shield of the Jotunn sounded more interesting (Nick Briggs is known to have titles changed before) or there has been a previous Big Finish release by the same name (Sarah Jane Smith 2.2) I don't know.
This story (under the Snowblind title) was initially going to be released last month, but switched placed with Planet of the Rani. The reason is made clear in the extras though, when Louise Jameson (the director) notes that there were delays with the script and she only had three days to find and schedule the guest cast.

Indeed, I thought she should have been in uniform at least She's even described in the story as wearing her uniform, or at least the fashions of the 40's. Professor Zettler (or whatever her name is, must have come from the same book as Perpugilliam) comments that she thought Constance was wearing retro to be fashionable.

I notice from reading Vortex that the "outfit" appears to be the clothes Miranda wore to the recording, which is understandable, but kinda disappointing that cover art doesn't reflect the story or the character.

The story was decent, it held my attention if nothing else, but it wasn't spectacular either. I don't know if I ever really caught how the Vikings managed to get THAT far inland.
I thought the science was a bit dodgy.
Colin and Miranda were great and I thought Louise did good on the direction (I had no idea they let her onto the Main Range until I heard the Extras) And about the American accents, I was actually surprised, they didn't sound awesome but they weren't horrible either. At least they didn't have an American spouting any British English terms, which always bugs me when I hear it. But there is a part of me that whenever I hear an American character on a BF story, I think I could have done it better myself, being an American living in the middle of the USA (but I probably couldn't... not being an actor)
I'm also don't know about the Doctor never being able to find the kitchen(s)... it might be a nice gag that the companions have no problem finding it, but he can't though.

I'm also don't know about the Doctor never being able to find the kitchen(s)... it might be a nice gag that the companions have no problem finding it, but he can't though. The Eighth Doctor has found it by Relative Dimensions, where Lucie spend most of the story battling lumpy gravy for the fate of Christmas dinner. In Afterlife the Seventh Doctor makes comfort food to try console Ace after the recent tragedy. Is there a list of stories that feature or reference the kitchen? Evelyn references it at the start of Project: Lazarus (commenting that each morning it's restocked exactly the same way), and she has to have made her chocolate sponges somewhere. Amy's seen cooking up a storm in the DWM comic strip Sticks and Stones (in The Chains of Olympus graphic novel). Ace and Hex take a toast and tea detour in the framing story for The Settling.

I enjoyed it Have to admit, at the time I didn't see the point in the long flashback to the Vikings, but it made more sense later I got thrown a bit by the cover image as well when the Professor mentioned Constance being in uniform. I look forward to more adventures with Constance in the future!
