This day has not started out very well. I am worried sick for my niece and cousins who live in Israel. And then I found out that a friend from high school passed away last night from a brain anuerysm. On top of one of my best friends finding out that an old friend of his is on hospice. The grey, rainy day just seems appropriate. Hoping that your day has improved.

Elections in two of our states. Including my own state. It is official. The Right-Wing-Party AfD, which includes members that are openly representing Nazi ideals, are now SECOND strongest party in both states, behind the ruling Christian parties. In recent public polls, the support of the right-wing party has been up above 25% for the German public as a whole. And this is a party who openly says things like "Women back into the kitchen" and "Shoot immigrants at the border" and in the party manifest wants to cut support for kindergardens and early child care (because the women should stop working and do what they are born for: do the childcare themselves).
To say I am unimpressed with this is putting it VERY mildly. This is VERY worrying. Sadly, even in my own family, some of the ideas have taken hold.
One feels bereft of hope for this world and humanity.

The good.... a missing episode of "Hancock's Half Hour" has been found The bad.... I'm pretty sure missing soundtracks of "Dad's Army" *haven't* been found, and rather than producing animation for them they've actually produced animation for the radio adaptations The ugly... is getting rid of the writers and directors of "Daredevil: Born Again" going to turn out to be a good thing or a bad thing, from the audience's perspective? Apparently they'd turned the show into something closer to Suits {Spoiler} with Foggy and Karen killed off before the first episode
The final version may not end up including things the audience don't want, but that doesn't necessarily mean it'll suddenly start including things we do want

Disappointing outcome of the Voice referendum in Australia today. However, given that most referendums here fail because we hate change, I’m looking closely at the numbers. For those in other countries, this was a referendum to have an advisory voice created for our indigenous population to advise future government policy, rather like what businesses, religious groups and other interest groups have. It was launched poorly by our government and was victim of a campaign of misinformation, racism and some outright lies by those opposed to it. It’s being hailed as a victory by the folks opposed to it but at the time of my typing the collated votes suggest that just over 40% of the country were in favourite of it. To me, despite it being a disappointment, that speaks of a large number of people who think that it’s a good idea, but that just might be my optimism speaking.

I was in and out voting in 6 minutes this morning.. The constant barrage of tv, radio, newspaper adverts and the protests on both sites out in public..
You only get 1 chance to make a good impression, Albanese messed it up plain and simple.. Basically asking the equivalent of "signing a contact without reading - "we will fill out the details later depending.."

Exactly: when you looked into it, there was nothing controversial about it, nothing that loads of other countries haven’t done. And it should have been explained just as simply. But it was left on the government website without being probably dispersed to the public. Which means that the “do your own research” crowd were free to make up stuff up about it and scaremonger.

I will be blatantly honest with you- I have lived in Oz for 10 months doing my big practical.
I traveled around. I met colleagues. I made friends with people I met- teachers, vet nurses, vets, clients..... And I was utterly shocked. I had NEVER before met a population that was so overtly RACIST. Even the vets and the nurses. They said things that would land you in jail in Germany (well, maybe not now that 25% percent are voting for the Right Wing party, but back then).
I have to say- I am not at the least surprised by this referendum.
I remember when I went up to Uluru and Katatjuta and did some indigenous experience trip (real indigenous guides who showed you stuff you normally do not see as a white person, like graveyards and holy sites). The lead vet nurse came to me: "Oh, that is cool. Are you going to climb the rock?" -"No, because it is their holy site. You would not climb a cathedral, either." The shocking reaction: "Oh, those damn Abos, just taking our money and take away our fun." She is a highly trained, highly skilled and intelligent person. And I got similar reactions from everywhere. Yes, there were a few exceptions, but overall, Australia came across to me as a deeply ingrained racist white nation.

Made my day- had to give a international seminar at work and as well as being paid, I also got a 40 Euro Amazon gift card as a "Thank You".
Plus, I finally rustled up some motivation to look forward to the German Who Convention in 2 weeks. For a long time, I had zero interest for very personal reasons. But at least now, I am motivated enough to get a cheap fast and easy costume together and had some fun playing around with the costume props.

I want to say this surprises me, but it doesn’t at all. We are still holding on to a mindset that worships our English heritage and is deeply suspicious of all the Asian countries around us as well as the indigenous people our ancestors displaced. Back in the 60s an academic called us “the lucky country” because we had never experienced the internal and external strife that nearly every other country in the world had experienced so we were happy to be run by mediocre people who had only known prosperity. Since then the original meaning has been lost and a lot of people still refer to us as a lucky country without any irony.

Sadly the world is heading that way. UK is far more racist now. Correction, far more overtly racist.

This is atrocious.
This is a party that openly in public and without any shame proclaimed. "Immigrants should be shot at the border."

But it was left on the government website without being probably dispersed to the public. Which means that the “do your own research” crowd were free to make up stuff up about it and scaremonger. Also the fact that prominent Ingidenous politicians, Aunties etc were vehemently telling everyone to vote "No". There was a lot of confusion and Sekret Squirrel Whispers and manipulation. I will reiterate again, our current Prime Minister flat out did a horrible job of tying to explain it all - the reporters and other politicians smelled blood in the water and called him on it every time, wasn't a good look.
1 of my closest friends is Indigenous and she messaged me after speaking to her elders the beginning of last week asking me to consider voting "No". I was surprised.
Was also chatting with 1 of the Managers at work, Spent the 1st 10 years in Australia then the next 40ish living in Canada, she has Indigenous people in her family through marriage - she knows the full stpry of what happened in Canada etc.
Unfortunately it's pretty much the same story everywhere- almost every country has the same history, the "Avatar" story.
