So now we have more Time War but this time using earlier Doctors! I remember when the Time War was a mysterious event. Oh well, it will be the first time I don't by a Peter Davison release.

Not sure what the issue is. It’s a war that rages against time forever and also for no time at all. It seems inevitable that the different incarnations of the Doctor would get involved with it to some extent, both pre and post War Doctor. It’s hardly seeping into every single range and story that Big Finish do.
They’ve produced a lot of releases and I think some ranges are better than others, but it’s barely scraping the surface of such a long and complex series of events. That element of mystery is still there but also if you want some insights then you have the opportunity to.
Doesn’t seem to be any harm in that.

I mean, by all means judge it without hearing it. Even in that short post your critique doesn’t match the release I worked on. But you’ll never know how.

I really like the sound of these 8 individual synopses. Each very different and with bags of potential. Is it an eight part tale or an anthology i wonder?
"Necessity is the mother of invention" as they say. I can see this as a halfway house to the kind of Box set treatment we may see for the (ex MR) classic series Doctors next year, with flexible story format lengths. A definite yes from me.

Eh. I have no issues with it. Sounds like it could be fun. Not like the Fifth Doctor will know that’s it THE Time War after all. Could just think it’s a possible dark future where the Dalek Empire has advanced significantly. One could argue that he’d already know that after being informed of the possibility in Genesis of the Daleks.

I admit I would have been a bit hesitant getting this had it not been included in my subscription. Just not sure about it. But now that I get it anyways, I of course will give it my time and attention and try to do a fair assessment. I am just not sure in my head on how this will play out and if this is what I want. But that is just me.

Sure the Second Doctor will get involved at some point. This is a bit of an odd announcement, and not something I’m rushing to get, but I can see why they’ve done it.

Sounds very interesting! I like these creative experiments with story structure that BF play with. Definite pre-order for me.

My understanding is that the Time War essentially started because of the Fourth Doctor, so it makes sense to me that BF would line up stories with older characters from Classic Who... though I also think it makes sense for those older characters to not yet know they're involved in a big, organized conflict--because they can't see the whole shape of it. It'd be like popping into a random villaige that gets attacked by a squad of soldiers: you have no way of knowing what their army is doing everywhere else. Does that make sense? I'm bad at analogies.
Anyway, I only got into Big Finish in earnest very recently, thanks to self-quarantine, and given the hellhole where I live, I'm very likely to going to be in self-quarantine for the next few years. Or longer if I finally succumb to my latent agoraphobia.
Most of my listening as has 8th Doctor stuff. I've heard everything--EVERYTHING--up to Doom Coalition, which i just finished last week, as well as Stranded (I could resist jumping ahead--I loved the premise too much). So I haven't heard any of McGann's Time War stories.
BUT I have very eagerly devoured the War Master and War Doctor sets, and believe them to be among the finest stories in the franchise. Between them and several of the other really fantastic stories BF has told over the years (The Red Lady and Doctor Who and the Pirates leap to mind) I genuinely believe Big Finish is offering stories far better than anything the TV show has ever done. The limitations of the audio format force them to rely more on substance than specatacle, and the lack of visual information requires tighter, more focused scripts. The Time War stories I've listened to are all masterfully written and performed and I honestly can't find many things to criticize about any one of them.
Derek Jacobi is the quintessential Master. John Hurt is the quintessential Doctor.
So I'm inclined to give Big Finish carte blanche with the series going forward. In this regard, at least, they have my absolute and unwavering trust.
That said, I do have one big-ish problem with their handling of the Time War: all the many and myriad contrivances they've used to prevent retconning New Who when it's characters crossover with Classic. Not letting Hurt or McGann interact directly with Jacobi is downright criminal (meanwhile Missy is left unable to interact with ANY Doctor unless and until Capaldi joins up). And it's a problem entirely of their own making: they could simply have said that when the War Doctor used the Moment, it affected his memories of the Time War, handily explaining why the TV Doctors remember what they say they remember, but conveniently don't rememember anything from the audio adventures.
EDIT: But that may be less a problem with the Time War in general and more just that Big Finish feels a bit too beholden to continuity the continuity of the TV show while simultaneously not much caring about the audio continuity (or expecting their audience to care). Listening to the first story in Missy's second series, for example, was pretty disappointing to me because it seems constructed deliberately to solve a "continuity problem" in the TV show that didn't actually need to be solved. Ah well.

The question always is do we have a good story to tell with this character? And if the answer is yes, you tell your story. You always want to broaden the canvas. Am I interested in an extended series of 5 dealing with the Time War? Probably not but eight 30 minute stories? Sure. Why not? Afterwards, who nose?

[...] Yep, that was more or less the original intention for the Last Great Time War as RTD wrote it. Stories that weren't necessarily part of the main fray of the War, but acted as a preamble, gathering momentum in the increasing tensions between the Time Lords and the Daleks. Genesis of the Daleks was a big one, the scheme to kill the High Council in Resurrection was another, The Apocalypse Element and Remembrance of the Daleks were both big moments of escalation and so on. A lot of stories that can/are taken on their own merits but -- when piled atop one another -- can also explain how it got as bad as it did.

I’m really looking forward to seeing this pair of Davison releases.
It’s been a few years since his last run in with the Daleks and with the main range ending this really does feel like the last ride for the anthology style main range.
I have faith that the writers and the cast involved have put forward excellent scripts and performances and each of the briefs feel different from anything we’ve seen in the other time war ranges.
As for Davison in the time war? Not concerned at all, after all they did an excellent first doctor set and the fifth had his role to play during the war in Day of the Doctor.
The only concerning thing of note was that the small cast was a necessity of the situation regarding COVID. that has me somewhat concerned for Stranded 2-4 and it’s larger cast. But that’s a concern for another day.
As far as I’m concerned Shadow of the Daleks should be great!

My understanding is that it doesn't take very long for the actual recording process (presumably they still do multiple takes and don't simply record the actors reading the scripts just the first time) and BF has posted about setting up professional-grade recording equipment being set up at some of the actors' homes (Baker and, erm, also Baker IIRC), and most of the other work can easily be done remotely, so I'm not too concerned about the Pandemic affecting their release schedule.
Actually, I'm kind of counting on it not, as I've been relying on Big Finish to stay sane during self-quarantine while my government is actively trying to get all of us killed.

Honestly it feels kinda weird to have The 5th Doctor in the time war but i can however see how he could have a part as Resurrection of The Daleks did have the whole cloning the doctor and his companions to infiltrate Gallifrey and Assassinated The High Council subplot which was never really addressed in the classic series so maybe Big Finish are going to expand and explore that subplot (unless its already been discussed before in the audios)

The exception there is that any 7th Doctor stories that were scheduled to be recorded are on hold while Sylvester McCoy is stuck in France. Which is probably the best place to be stuck, if for the food alone.
