Not that this wasn't known, but it was confirmed there's no external funding. Anything now seems to be BBC Studios. So less money, you'd think. Making any of the longer stories less likely for now.
They confirmed two teams are working (not have worked, past tense) so while a November surprise would be grand...spreading them out more gives us more to look forward to. Paul Hembury overseeing one, Russel Minton another. Charles Norton has been involved with VAM for Underwater Menace but not the full animations like he was.
November is gonna be busy enough anyway!

I'm loving the reports from the screening of The Underwater Menace from people who've never liked it that this is really good. Annemarie Walsh directing is a real win as her work on Faceless Ones and especially Evil Of The Daleks has been possibly the best of the range - except The Invasion but we know they had a lot more money than expected for that!
She said at the screening the decision was taken to have a bit of a healthy disregard for the TV eps and work from the original scripts instead, so it's a new interpretation rather than anything else. Since so much of this, comparatively, exists and it's not a fan-fave by any means, I think that's a really smart move. The recon is there for purists.
Comments I've seen say the humour is now more apparent without the constricted sets and the design work is a lot more what was intended on paper. No-one saying it's now a classic but much more fun to sit through. Mission accomplished if so!
BTW, Jan 24th for a US/CA release and DVD only as per usual.

Peter Purves said he's worked on extras at a con, so..pretty confirmed. I've never heard anyone - in 30 years of fandom - say it's one of the best Who stories. There's tabloid sensationalism..then that!

I would have been very surprised if they hadn’t animated Celestial Toymaker to capitalise on his appearance in the 60th but nice to know that it’s in the works.

Been great reading the feedback for The Underwater Menace. I think it’s the right approach to handle these as full productions and make the appropriate amendments here and there. I’m sure it’s odd watching it alongside the existing episodes, but the recons feel like more suitable alternatives for that, even though I personally don’t get on with them.
I think The Celestial Toymaker was inevitable given the animations have a new breath of life and he’s returning in the 60th; look forward to more details on that as they emerge.

Presumably a placeholder release date. I'm only seeing the DVD, no standard or steel book Blu-ray as yet. Hopefully those listings will appear soon

Cyril is depicted as an annoying schoolboy on TV (who looks suspiciously like another such character. No, does he? Really? ) but I'm not sure that's referred to in the script. So he could easily be drawn as Tweedledum/dee from 'Through the Looking Glass' and it wouldn't change anything. In fact Tenniel's original illustrations in 'TTLG' are very Cyril-like - Tweedledum/dee are rotund and with faces strangely old for their costume.

Its official, and in a somewhat janky looking 3D style.

Its official, and in a somewhat janky looking 3D style. Weird. Not sure I could cope with four episodes of that

Must say I quite like the animation. It reminds me of a Telltale-esque game, which perfectly suits the puzzle nature of the story. I can imagine it looks very atmospheric in black and white. I think the mouth movements are almost a bit too subtle / static, but other than that I like it.

It doesn't look as bad as the last 3D one, Web Of Fear. That was the nadir of the range. Well, if we include the DVD animations the headache inducing editing of Reign Of Terror has to be the worst.
Still, going by recent animations they're using a lot of the ideas of the script and interpreting them themselves rather than trying to replicate exactly what a BBC TV studio could do 60 years ago (that's what the recon is for) - so if there's more imagination and more over the top moments to really sell the high concept, this could be a good one.

Well, the animation style is certainly different, but why not? It's all taking place in a weird puzzle-world of the Toymaker's construction, so why shouldn't it look different?
With no reliable release date yet, this is probably not the finished-quality product we're seeing. Remember the commentary tracks on some of the other releases where the commentary team are suddenly looking at 'stick-figures' or even blanks? It's a long process and it remains to be seen what the polished blu-ray eventually looks like.
Anyway, I'm pleased to see The Celestial Toymaker restored from the part-invisibility to which The Bureacratic Tape-Wiper had condemned him!

Is this a joke? Embarrassingly bad. I'd be ashamed if I had been responsible for that. Pathetic stuff. The animations are so inconsistent but this is one of the worst things I have ever seen. Worse than a playstation game from 20 years ago. There is plenty of fan made stuff better than this mess. £20 on bluray!

The art style looks good but the animation itself is so stiff. It's like the animation is missing frames.

It reminds me of the stuff who recons did on daily motion years ago. I wonder how much of it was done using AI to save money.
Having said that, this could be a year away from release, so hopefully this is just early test footage.

I think this is dreadful. It looks like, as many people have said, it was made in an old.. *old* computer game format. They'd've been better off using CG fingerpuppets or something, if it was an artistic decision.
