I rather enjoyed this one. I do think that given the nature of what it was, I think it should have been a 6 parter easily.
Ajjaz Awad was excellent breathing life into a character that really never had much to do.

I loved it. What a lovely story. I loved the spotlight on Katerina. I've only ever heard OF the character, like most of us I expect. It really did feel as if she was from a different time. So much of it was heartfelt toward the era. I really did like it when {Spoiler} The Second Doctor is speaking alone with Katerina and describes the First Doctor as being very young and prone to tantrums when he doesn't get his way. Ha! That completely makes sense! Good job all at BF. Looking forward to The Home Guard.

Superb. One of those stories that you wish was so much longer. Peter Purves, particularly, is so very good - you wouldn't know he was talking to himself.

Really very good there's a great mix again of fitting in Era but also pushing it beyond in terms of emotion and consequence.

Wow. These are some really impressive performances there! The story... very standard Dalek story, at least in my book. But I did not buy this for the Daleks. What I really like is that the meeting of the Doctors is not played for laughs and does not get bogged down in fun but ultimately fanservice banter. No, here it even leads to some nice character development and intimate emotional scenes. This is where the real meat is. Very enjoyable indeed.

Exceeded expectations in every way. Extremely good use of the characters and truly great performances all around. I wish this could have actually been a series of TV episodes, but my ears have no idea that it wasn't.

I really enjoyed the preview episode, although not really having heard Wendy Padbury as Zoe on BF, I was admittedly distracted by the natural effects of time on her acting voice. Honestly, it's no difference than Katy Manning's efforts to recapture Jo alongside Treloar's Third Doctor, but even that took a little effort for my mind's eye to "remap" (and I enjoyed the latest Third Doctor boxset). The writing and performances for episode 1 were otherwise very engaging, so this is on my wishlist for whenever the right sale happens.

Astonishing. Where to begin...? Where else, but with Katarina. We know her for her sacrifice, but little else. There wasn't time to get to know her as a human being and yet here she springs. Fully-formed. In a story that hinges almost exclusively on her own unique understanding of the world. An understanding that she was never allowed to have. Her death aboard the Spar is harrowingly realised. {Spoiler}I loved the contrast between the stubborn First Doctor and dour Steven's morning bickering and the Doctor's later discussion with Katarina. Difficult though their interactions may be, there is never any sense that he doesn't respect them. He values Steven and treasures Katarina. The Doctor's conversation with the handmaiden about knowledge vs. intelligence was a particular highlight. It's rare to see that grandfatherly side of him during Season 3, so it's nice to see when there's an opportunity.
But, the reigns of this particular story lie with the Second Doctor. A chance mishap that unties one of the Daleks' strongest defeats. There's something truly horrific about the Time Destructor's use and the sheer anarchy that tears through the planet just at the knowledge of an invasion. These Daleks are those of Occupation of Winter or Across the Darkened City. The TV21 conquerors whose war of nerves with their enemies belies a fundamental need to destroy. A kind of enemy that the Second Doctor would be familiar with from Power and Evil. It's therefore interesting that this story essentially places him in a very similar role that he abandoned. He's the schemer. The catalyst and the inhibitor.
There's an interesting role reversal at play here. By the end, the First Doctor is doing his successor's typical mad dash, while the Second Doctor assumes the standard knowing authority usually assigned to his predecessor. They end up having to take on the characteristics of each another to solve their dilemma. I like, though, how Two still waits for One's permission to undo the timeline. That authority from The Three/Five Doctors is still very much there and, even if the timeline will be for nought, he's still going to save as many people as he can. On the more technical side: the performances are outstanding across the board. Everyone here, whether their role was big or small, did a fantastic job. I have to make special mention of Toby Hrycek-Robinson's incidental score, which transforms Tristram Cary's otherworldly Master Plan soundtrack into a full orchestral experience. The suite is only fifteen minutes long, but it packs one heck of a punch. There's loads more I could say, but suffice for now, Daughter of the Gods is an extremely good showing from The Early Adventures.

Money permitting, I'd really like to get this (and the Home Guard). The Early Adventures really seem to have upped their game a bit of late. I dipped in and out of the releases from last year and was impressed (sadly didn't get them all). I do think its a shame that we only get 2 releases this year as opposed to the normal 4. I do see why, but still would like more.

There's not much I could say about this that hasn't already been said. The script gives plenty of action and story to all of the cast. Everyone contributes. It's an outstanding accomplishment by all involved, at all stages of production.

I thought this was excellent. One of those productions where every single element is firing on all cylinders, complementing one another: script, cast, direction, sound, music, etc.
Each one of our six regulars all get their chance to shine. Peter Purves effortlessly switches between Steven and the Doctor and you completely forget he’s carrying whole scenes by himself. Frazer Hines is on fine form as the Doctor, which is good as I found he’s been a bit off recently, so was worried he’d let the production down, especially when we’ve got some Doctor interaction. Oh, what great interaction it is! Two distinctly different sides to the Doctor that are still very much the same man. The banter that often makes these multi-Doctor adventures is missing here, but the way the two clash is a more appropriate alternative.
Of course, it’s Ajjad Awaz who steals the show and quite right too. A character that very few of us know about and one who wasn’t particularly well defined. This changes in Daughter of the Gods. Katarina is still a short lived companion, but she’s well served and a rounded character in this, aided by a lovely performance. I’d also suggest that the three month gap the story implements helps too; the Doctor and Steven have become attached to her, which means we are too.
If I did have a criticism, it’s that this easily could’ve stretched to six parts. The Daleks are a glorified cameo and their presence is a mashup of the other sixties Dalek stories, with obviously a connection to The Daleks Master Plan. I think there’s scope to have expanded some more and also have some more background to the First Doctor and the life they’ve set up.
On the subject of The Daleks Master Plan, Big Finish have turned it into rather the epic, haven’t they? All top notch releases and Daughter of the Gods happily joins those.
A belated happy anniversary Doctor Who!

If I did have a criticism, it’s that this easily could’ve stretched to six parts. They ought to think seriously about doing one (or even two) first Doctor stories set on the planet between episodes 1 and 2.
Mind you, I reckon there's scope to fit another CD release between episodes of "Time in Office", and they haven't done that either.

Well that was quite good.
Light on plot, but the character stuff really, really works. The scenes between the Doctors and Katarina are very well played, and the companion team-ups were quite fun. Katarina is the heart of the story here, and Awad gives a good performance. Katarina gets a very clear identity here and I like how her presence has brought out the grandfatherly side of the first Doctor again. The Daleks are pretty much just present as portrayed in their more unrelenting 60s personas, but they served the plot well.
Purves and Hines are damn near uncanny with their Doctor performances now. It’s really impressive how many scenes feature them talking to themselves and yet feel completely full-cast.

I was really looking forward to this and it didn't disappoint. Excellent performances from the whole cast and a wonderful contrast between the Doctors. On paper, the plot seems very simple and more or less undone by the end, but the character work and performances make it come alive. It's a shame no window for Katarina stories could be concocted – Awad was wonderful and I'd love to hear more of her – but any subsequent story would struggle to live up to this one.

Only big finish could write for such a small known character & give her such a emotional arc.
Great performances by the cast, atmospheric sound design & very well paced, the ending was particularly poignant & great to hear the First Doctor being a little more selfish again not wanting Katerina to die similar to how he was in the early stories.
5/5.
