Well, seems like Patel's stepping down and working on his own sci-fi series. cultbox.co.uk/general/doctor-who-writer-plans-his-own-science-fiction-showI won't lie: I wish him the best, but I will miss him on the show. However you feel about Demons and Fugitive, these were both stories unafraid to rile viewers and go big, rather than home. I will always respect a writer who can do that on a show as old as this, and with a legacy of one bonafide classic and another that may have given S12 a giant shot in the arm, I'd say that's not a bad way to be remembered. Well, I'll check out whatever he does next, that's for sure - but it's sad to see the writer of probably my favourite two Thirteen TV stories go away. But who knows, we might see his name on another Doctor Who script someday! Look at Rona Munro!

He's already written a short story for The Target Storybook, so fingers crossed we get more of that on-and-off in the future. I'd love to see his name pop up now and again in prose (a la Ian Marter).

Wow, this week was some breathless viewing! Best of the season so far.
The overarching story line is giving Whittaker a lot of interesting intensity to play around with and I think she really killed it in this episode. From the humor of bluffing the Judoon to the dark ruminations on Gallifrey, she was just on fire in this episode. I can't wait to see where this story line goes. It's been simmering in the back of my mind since last season, where it felt like there was something ominous in the air that couldn't quite be seen, and I love how twisty and personal the whole thing has gotten. The mystery seems so much bigger than the destruction of Gallifrey now and that's a very tantalizing feeling.
And how great was it to finally see Jack again? I actually burst out laughing with glee. Barrowman was so much fun in the episode. It was as if he'd been saving up all that yearning and effort he's put into getting Jack back on TV and let it burst through his performance. He was as mad and charming as ever.
My goodness, I loved this episode.

This was watched by 4.21 million viewers overnight, making it the sixth most watched programme for the day in the United Kingdom. A bit of a rise from last week.

Hrm... I'm not sure how much is reveal and how much is misdirection.
I smell some mix of Time War/Unbound. Shame it wasn't Gatiss though. But then, with an infinite number of realities, there would be an infinity of doctors exactly like everything played out on TV and a larger infinite set of alternatives....
Unless we can't even trust what we're shown, 'she' has a TARDIS and Gallifrey didn't burn, for that her.

Chibbers insists this isn't a parallel-universe deal. www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/jo-martin-first-black-doctor-21373790Not sure whether that takes us any further forward. Incidentally, do we need a separate 'Doctor Ruth' thread? (My personal theory - she is the original second Doctor, averted by 12's intervention in 1's regeneration)

Oh I'm now wondering if somehow she is a future Doctor. No previous Doctor has been able to transport into the TARDIS have they?

WTF did I just watch? What was this?
Many of you know by now that the "Guitar on a tank" scene was one of my all-time favorites. Well, this is basically a WHOLE episode of playing a whole orchestra on various Sontaran battle tanks.
I have no idea what it all means. I am also too cynical by now to get my hopes up, and I fear this whole built-up might just end up as a "parallel universe" or "we all had a dream".
I still harbour my pet theory that this all still plays out in the Master's Tardis where they got caught when they entered the plane in Spyfall. Would be my pet theory.
Well, yes, this was wonderfully entertaining. But, in hindsight, it just felt as if they chucked a whole basket of RTD's best-offs into a blender, switched it on, but did not wait until all was nicely blended and we ended up with a stew... a stew full of interesting and yummy bits, but just not congealing into a homogenous whole.
Overall, for me, the plot just did not flow as a story. It was more like a fever dream.
Jack was wasted in this, he had no part of the actual plot and appeared like a random TV ad. The companions felt more like foreign bodies in the Doctor's life than part of a team. And then the WEIRD happened and I had to check my tea if someone had slipped some acid in.
So we had series 11 which had it's moments but which was often a bit bland... and then series 12 happens and... this must be among the weirdest Who episodes I have ever encountered, and here I am also counting the weird Big Finish ones. This was up there with Zagreus.
And I have to say I am not really happy about the Doctor's behaviour and how dark, brooding, secretive and unapproachable she is becoming. This is not the "Fam" anymore with which we started. The Doctor and the companions do not feel like a team anymore. It is as if the Doctor is living in her own little world. This feels wrong to me.
I am still not sure what I should think. I think it will entirely depend on how this progresses. It could be a stroke of absolute genius. Or the opposite. We will see.
How do you like RuthDoctor?😀 On another thought... she could also be Jenny. Then the "same genetic material" would also make sense. After all, she is a clone. The style of fighting also reminds me of Jenny. And she also was conceived during that time in RTD's era.

(My personal theory - she is the original second Doctor, averted by 12's intervention in 1's regeneration) He's also been hinting Jack won't be returning this season so Jodie's comments that all this won't be resolved by Ep 10 are really beginning to look to be more important than we thought. There are so many things going on right now it's hard to know which are season arcs, which are era-spanning and which are red herrings. And that's fun. I do think though Chibnall saying "it's not a trick, she's from this universe" doesn't mean too much, I mean making her pre-Hartnell or an alt-timeline in the same Universe or a product of some shift in Gallifreyan mythos would be just as much of a "trick" but that's fine. It's all sci-fi out-there plotting however you slice it and there's nothing wrong with that. I guess he's worried people would think he would retcon the first PoC Doctor so is explicitly saying "No, she's absolutely The Doctor" but that's precisely one of the main reasons it hasn't crossed my mind that they would go back on the reveal, they'd be nuts to do that in 2020 after shattering one of the last glass ceilings the show has.

So we’re scoring an average of 4.8/5 so far for this episode. Not bad, not bad at all!

The worst is a 3, and even then only one person gave it that. Unreal response for what I think this time last Tuesday we probably all expected to just be a runaround Judoon ep to kill time midseason. What a difference a week makes.

I've been surprised (in a good way) by how overwhelmingly positive the reaction to her casting has been. And, as you say, for them to turn around and go "Ha! Fooled you," would be as PR disaster of epic proportions.

Incidentally, do we need a separate 'Doctor Ruth' thread? Not a bad idea, but I'd wait a few more days, just to make sure more people are caught up.

Crazy thought (and I don't expect this to happen at all, I'm just brainstorming) : What if Jodie is leaving at the end of the season (or even next season) and told Chibnall before writing got underway for the season, so Chibnall is trying something totally new by introducing the next Doctor long before the incumbent regenerates? The two met this week in a Two Doctors-ish story, and maybe cross each others' paths a few more times, never knowing who each other is because something happens to Thirteen's head/brain/mind when she regenerates into Jo Martin. Like I said...99.9% likely nonsense, but a fun thought

Like I said...99.9% likely nonsense, but a fun thought 'The Doctor! She was the Doctor all the time.'
There is a sort-of precedent for the next Doctor being present onscreen in advance isn't there, with the 'Logopolis' Watcher (which for people - there must be some I guess - not familiar with the classic series regenerations is the reference I was making above) and if Time really is messed up after what the Master did to Gallifrey (or maybe that's why he did it) then why not?
There would have to be a reason that RuthDoctor can't remember ever being Thirteen, but if she was as yet a temporal possibility of the Fourteenth Doctor, maybe she wouldn't remember? She is already the Doctor, but imagine that so far she hasn't definitely previously been any of the earlier incarnations! ('Wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey...' I know, but what is Time to the Time Lords? We humans are so linear. ) At the moment of Thirteen's regeneration and only then will the new Doctor gain all of the memories of her predecessors.
We were teased about 'the next Doctor' being there in advance once before weren't we? Maybe it is true this time? I'd love it to be true!
Fun speculating wildly anyway! I hope all this does run through the next season too - it's too good to resolve quickly.

Maybe she is indeed a Season 6B Alt-Third Doctor set post World Game but pre-Spearhead. When she went running again and was caught they took away that regeneration, gave her a new one and wiped her memory so that it went straight from Troughton to Pertwee
or i could be completely wrong lol

I’m just gonna say she is what she appears to be, and is one of a secret pre-Hartnell regeneration cycle that originated on Ancient Gallifrey much like the Other.
If I continue to believe this, then I won’t be as disappointed when it happens. If it doesn’t happen, then I’ll be pleasantly surprised.
