I'm still surprised that Jubilee didn't make the top 20, though. It's probably Shearman's best Doctor Who story (though I've yet to listen to Scherzo) and a strong contender for the best Who story, up there with the original Human Nature (not that the TV version isn't fantastic.) In fact, of the Shearman stories I've listened to, I'd rate Chimes as the weakest (which still puts it well above most other stories.) But I can see why it has a broader appeal than Jubilee or the Holy Terror.

That's what I voted for but alas I didn't win. Me neither. It would have been nice if somebody on this forum won it but it's not looking like it

I voted for The Holy Terror. I love Chimes, but I really need big breaks between listens, as repetition is a big factor in the story and humour.

Shocker. I wonder how many actually go into this story unaware of it's sterling reputation and think as highly of it as the general con consensus does. Is there anyone here who doesn't like Chimes of Midnight?

It is my favourite Main Range story, so I am glad that enough other people thought so too... The Chimes of Midnight is a worthy winner to the poll. Its my Solid 2nd, Davros and Spare Parts jostle between 1st and 3rd and 4th with Storm Warning

It took me a while to decide between Holy Terror, Davros, Chimes, and Spare Parts....

That would be me. I'm not fond of it at all.
To be fair to the author, he does a very good job of crafting characters, building suspense and then dropping surprises so there is a lot that is technically brilliant in his stories. I just found this one to be boring and I felt there was no point listening to the second and third parts since anything revealed in those would be misdirection with the story not really defined until the final cliff hanger. I also find his portrayal of mental illness to be lazy, although he does write mad characters to be a lot of fun.

I won! No...No I didn't... Bad luck randomjc I would've enjoyed reading your thoughts on them.

See, this is what happens. You get me thinking about it, and I get kind of obsessive, and now I want to listen to the first 50 at least again, and write down my thoughts. Been over two years since I listened last.

At least Nekrmanteia and Abandoned have the Doctor and his companion(s) behaving in character.

Is there anyone here who doesn't like Chimes of Midnight? it was the third big finish story i heard i bought storm warning, the stones of venice and chimes from amazon just to hear some eighth doctor stories with paul mcgann since i really liked him as the doctor. i hadnt even gone to the big finish website yet. so i went in pretty cold.

Worthy winner for sure. I'm sure it would be one of my top four or five along with Storm Warning, Spare Parts, The Emerald Tiger and most certainly something, anything with Six and Evelyn. Didn't win but I didn't actually enter the competition, I just felt a little too odd when the voting came to things I hadn't heard yet. I think I had a go at picking from the original 200 but ended up completely stalled when I got to page eight and hadn't heard any of them, or something like that.
Was a lot of fun, and next time be sure to vote for things that nobody owns that we'd all like to see on sale :-)

No, I'm post 2005. I'm just obsessive and really like BF. My first real purchase was 2013. So you know, you aren't wrong.
Fully caught up with the MR's in less then 2 years?
That's impressive!

That pretty much describes me. I started listening to BF around December 2013 and I've heard all but about 15-20 MR releases. Plus a whole lot more.
For the first year and a half I was working on the road, driving from one home to another and I would listen to about 1 audio a day, every day.

I think I voted for it. I was also surprised that Jubilee wasn't in the top 20. I probably would have voted for that instead of Chimes, although maybe not.

Absolutely. Christie published nine of her novels prior to that fateful voyage aboard the R101 and the Doctor even mentions in passing his copy of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (signed by Agatha herself, but missing the last page), a Hercule Poirot mystery first published in 1926. Charley could easily have read the exploits of the little Belgian detective, Tommy and Tuppance, Colonel Race and Superintendent Battle. Fun fact: Her meeting with the Doctor during October coincides with the publication of The Murder at the Vicarage, the first Miss Marple mystery. The things you learn from the internet... Well done to Rob Shearman, Chimes is certainly a worthy contender for the best of the best.

No audio has ever captivated me as deeply as Chimes has. Very well deserved.

Side note, I was hoping for Doctor Who and the Pirates. but Chimes is okay...I guess. I actually voted for Pirates... knowing it would not win but wanted to have a dissenting voice.
Chimes... I hate to say this, but I don't even remember it. I know I will once I relisten, and I plan to do so in the near future.

It's a fine winner even if it's not even the best Shearman BF story It's really not the winner of anything substantial though. The methodology of picking this was so flawed it's laughable as any kind of "serious" poll but as an amusement for social media and a chance to get some quick sales of the top 20, its done its job.

I do. It is one of my favorites. Time distortions, mind mending, and English Cozy Murder Mystery. All down my alley.
