The upset from Tier 4, combined with the news of this new strain, will have some of you really anxious. After this year, who could blame you? However, I've always endeavoured to be a calming voice on this thread, doing what I can to cut through the veil of uncertainty and give some comfort. Thank you. That has been very much appreciated from the start. I think it's important to bear a few things in mind: 1) Viruses develop new strains all the time. Covid isn't doing anything unique or special. 2) As tui has discussed before, and referring back to past news of weaker strains in places like Mongolia and Italy, a more contagious virus doesn't mean a more lethal one. Indeed, to survive, the virus needs to be able to adapt to maximise the use of its host - it trades destructiveness for infectiousness. Even with the new strain having circulated for a while the death rate hasn't kept up and there are no new reported symptoms unique to this version. 3) Vaccines are always rejigged to keep up with new strains - it's how the flu ones work. Now that we have a baseline, it'll be easier to counteract new strains, as well as much faster, than having to build new vaccines all over again. Couple that with constant evolutions in treatments, drugs and growing medical experience, and we are in a better place than we were to deal with Covid. There's still a ways to go, to be sure, but I believe we are past the worst point, insofar as complete helplessness against the virus. We are nearer the end of this and, as I've always said throughout, know that are people on the ground making a difference and getting us on the road back. And most of all, know you're not alone in this - this place and everyone on it is here for you. Some very good points indeed. For whatever it's worth, while I struggle to imagine what could have happened to make this "more transmissible", yesterday I was reading our Surgeon General's remarks to the effect of us not actually knowing whether it is more transmissible, or whether a particular set of circumstances has led to the appearance of a more transmissible strain. "We don't even know if it's really more contagious yet or not, or if it just happened to be a strain that was involved in a super spreader event right now, we have no indications that it is going to hurt our ability to continue vaccinating people or that it is any more dangerous or deadly than the strains that are currently out there."While we are hearing that it is "70% more transmissible" due to a mutation in the spike protein we are also informed that "In a Nov. 25 paper published in the journal Nature, for example, scientists studied more than 12,000 mutations of SARS-CoV-2 from viruses in 99 countries and concluded that none were more easily spreading from person to person."

Because I work in health, I'm eligible for a test to see if I have already had the virus. I'm not as excited as elkawho, but very interested in what the results will be nonetheless!

Apparently Boris Johnson and co will be reviewing our current lockdown situation in the UK and there is talk of him supposedly placing the nation into Tier 5. Whatever that’s meant to mean.
Probably just means you can’t put your bins out now. In any event, stay safe anyone. Feel like 2021 is going to be an interesting if just as frustrating year.

I can understand why, but they are trying too hard to keep schools open. But with some of the indecision, my Niece's anxiety has been going nuts because she doesnt know whats going on.
My Nephew doesnt really care, it just means he gets to play Roblox for longer lol

My Nephew doesnt really care, it just means he gets to play Roblox for longer lol My younger brother is just the same. He’s quite happy to socialise via WhatsApp and play games online with his friends. I honestly don’t know what’s going on with schools at the moment. At least with university and some colleges, you can do virtual learning but I honestly don’t know what primary schools are meant to do. Or even what the situation is with exams at the moment. Part of me thinks it would be wise to have another lockdown like we did earlier this year with only essential key workers being allowed out and about, another part says that’ll be the worst thing we could possibly do. I’m just glad I’m not the one who has to make that decision that’s all.

So many will have been given an inch and taken a mile at Christmas and will do the same at New Year that having the incubation period for the virus, a circuit breaker in all but name, makes absolute sense. Having Asympotmatic kids turn up after the Holidays is impossible to avoid but will be less and less likely every day that the postponement of a return is allowed. It's already policy in the devolved nations but Gavin Williamson has this almost OCD need to never change plans. When even Boris wouldn't commit to saying kids would be back in English schools as early as planned, I'd suggest the Minister starts the backpeddle. The NEU want to move returns back at least until the 18th, like Scotland and Wales, and wants the Government to commit a LOT more to testing and vaccinating teachers, especially with the new variant strain believed to move even faster in kids, as though enough teachers weren't terrified before..

Considering the state of Essex at the moment, it seems more and more likely that we’ll probably be entering a new national lockdown.
The matter of whether or not schools can re open will be a contentious issue I’m sure.

New heartbreaking national record- today, 1127 people died. That is more than people in my home village. So yeah, basically, on just one day, the population of my home village was wiped out. Plus, one of my colleagues who is 10 years younger than me is in intensive care, in isolation, and we do not know if she will make it. Also, our national lockdown most likely will be extended. And tomorrow, although demonstrations and fireworks are banned, the COVID deniers plan a "March on Berlin" and at a guess, although the sale of fireworks is forbidden nationwide, plenty of idiots will refuse to follow the rules. Not a good day news-wise.

We can but hope. Sadly, reports of today also say that the deliveries of vaccination for the coming weeks is delayed. The company cannot produce as fast and as many as the whole world demands.
And it is increasingly frustrating seeing too many idiots still not willing to follow the rules.
It is not boding well for the end of January.

Indeed. In my neck of the woods, it looks like we won’t be coming out of Tier 4 until at least April. We can but hope as you said.

I do have a rather sinking feeling that come tomorrow, a lot people are just going to say ‘Sod it’ and have a lot of New Years get together.
Considering the majority of the country is in Tier 4, I feel like such a thing would propel the nation into another national lockdown.

Considering the majority of the country is in Tier 4, I feel like such a thing would propel the nation into another national lockdown. I'm pretty much convinced you are right. There's little more disheartening and infuriating than seeing images on the news, of people gathering and socialising like there was nothing wrong. Equally, there are still comments (on Facebook and the like) 'laughing' at people who follow the rules. Name-calling like 'sheep', or the wittier 'sheeple', has become commonplace. I can understand some feeling pressured by the restrictions, but how selfish!?
Today at my workplace, we're all masked up (except for those who can't quite bring themselves to cover their noses, and in some cases their mouths as well) and a rule has been passed that if you are seen standing too close to someone, you get sent home without pay. Good!

It’s at times like this that I am reminded of the final monologue from Inspector Goole. ‘.....We don’t live alone. We are members of one body. We are responsible for each other.’
