A couple of days ago I got an email from Amazon saying that (you know, despite the fact that it's out tomorrow) the release date has been pushed back until a week or so before the second. The list of "things that I'm not going to question" gets longer by the day... I found it in Waterstones It's going to cost me a little more, but I was thinking about heading down to see my local one has it at some point tomorrow... I wouldn't have minded if my copy were delayed by, say, a week or two, but a little over two months is pushing it.

The latest Doctor Who newsletter has a excerpt from The Knight, The Fool and The Dead and a new instalment of Secret from Time Lord Victorious. It also announces that there’s going to be a TLV themed series, Tales from the Dark Times, available on the Doctor Who Comic Creator app. Issue #1 is 99p. Attachment Deleted

I read the first issue of Tales of the Dark Times... not worth the 99p to be honest

I've just finished The Knight, The Fool and The Dead. I thought it was really good. It's a fascinating insight into the Doctor in the immediate aftermath of The Waters of Mars, with some glimpses of the PTSD he's experiencing. The Kotturuh are well realised with some great descriptions of how they move and look and even what the presence of them feels like. I don't believe we're actually getting them on audio, except in the two Short Trips, so I felt how they were realised on the page was quite important. And Brian the Ood is exactly how I'd hoped he be, I can't wait to hear him opposite the Eighth Doctor in a couple of weeks time. The interludes were interesting: It was nice to have a throwback to the First Doctor and Barbara telling him the Brothers Grimm story; it's a nice nod to the Doctor really becoming the Doctor over the course of those first three stories. When the second interlude took us straight to Nine, I was actually expecting the third interlude to take us to the present day and have Thirteen tell it to, say, Graham, or something. In the end it takes us back to Eight; it makes sense but a little missed opportunity I thought. We know the Doctor goes back to being the Doctor and not the Time Lord Victorious, so I thought bringing it up to the latest incarnation would've been a nice bookend and had her involved in events, even only slightly. It is a perfectly standalone story, with a tease / cliffhanger for All Flesh is Grass, and it works really well as a continuation of where The Waters of Mars left off. Inevitably you'll want to read the next one, though, as the tease is good! But I think if you just get the pair of books, and watch The Waters of Mars, then you've pretty much done TLV in a nutshell; everything else is supporting material. I feel pretty confident in saying that based on reading The Knight, The Fool and The Dead, starting off Monstrous Beauty and what we know about the Big Finish trilogy. I say the above because Eight appears with Daleks and Nine appears with the Great Vampires, so Big Finish and Monstrous Beauty, respectively. I'm hoping we get a proper battle of the Doctors in All Flesh is Grass. The cliffhanger teases that and I hope it delivers. One thing I will say as a criticism is the book is very slight. It's 178 numbered pages. And that's generous, given that the three interludes make up about 10%, many chapters end on a blank page and the exaggerated margins and header / footer waste a quarter of each page. I think it took me a couple of hours to read. That isn't to say it's not a full story, it is, but it's a quick and fast paced read and I think there was scope for more content or a cheaper book. I hope All Flesh is Grass is longer.

Well The Knight, The Fool and The Dead was a quick read. The only other hardback new series novel I have is The Stone Rose, which is 249 pages. This is only 178. I think thematically this is quite a nice expansion on Ten’s era. Death and control of it is a real recurring theme, from School Reunion, to The Runaway Bride, to Voyage of the Damned (which actually gets a neat callback here), to The Fires of Pompeii, to The Waters of Mars, so the focus on it here fits really well. It’s a proper creative hook for this mini-era, and I appreciate such creativity. I think the Doctor’s mindset post- Waters is nicely touched on and it’s clearly implicit that the prophecies from Sigma and Carmen, and the summons, have become a Sword of Damocles currently hanging over him, and given him a sense of nothing to lose. The interludes are a nice touch for this too, doing well at communicating the Doctor’s relationship with death without having to have Ten just spell it out. None of the Doctor’s actions here feel out of character or inexplicable; he’s clearly got his reasons. I was pleasantly surprised by how little continuity was at play here. I don’t think the species of any of the main characters have been seen before anywhere. The Dark Times is a truly new era, and I enjoyed how this book exploited that. {Spoiler} The only deep-continuity is the First Interlude set in the Cave of Skulls, and I think that was a nice touch of demonstrating how formative those early stories were for the Doctor. The Kotturuh are nicely portrayed. From the pure horror of the prologue, it’s clear Cole has a strong handle on what this force of nature should be. They have their Design, and that’s all that matters to them. There’s some really effective descriptions accompanying their appearances. The ending is very juicy and has given me much hope for All Flesh is Grass. {Spoiler} I assume the main purpose of Big Finish and DWM is to contextualise the Eight and Nine’s perspectives leading to that ending, and I’m game for that. All in all. A good expansion of post- Waters Ten and a great appetiser for TLV.

Interesting release on Amazon: Doctor Who - Time Lord Victorious Road To The Dark Times [Blu-ray] [2020]Apparently out on the 9th November. There's nothing new, except a "bonus booklet", but it's a compilation of Doctor Who stories containing legends of the Dark Times, the Dalek Empire and the Time Lord Victorious: • Planet of the Daleks • Genesis of the Daleks • The Deadly Assassin • State of Decay • The Curse of Fenric • The Runaway Bride • The Waters of Mars I quite like the idea to be honest. Seems a great opportunity to get fans on board with Doctor Who merchandise, it's a cracking run of stories and it's quite a nice compilation to have; I love the cover.

Planet of the Daleks is the puzzling one for me, but it’s a great story, and it might come into play with other TLV releases.
I’m actually pretty excited about this one for some reason that I can’t explain! And that seems to be the vibe on Twitter too. I think it’s probably because it’s a great selection of stories and it’s just a fantastic way for fans to get up to speed with TLV and also dip into the past eras of the show.
It’d be nice if the booklet has an exclusive story and makes a proper effort to link elements of the stories up to Time Lord Victorious / The Dark Times. I think that’s a bit of a clincher otherwise some might seem a little tenuous.

Ah lovely, thanks for that. I keep forgetting about the animated series, yet it’s probably the biggest investment and widest reaching element of the project!

Official Article: www.doctorwho.tv/news/?article=time-lord-victorious-bluray-road-to-the-dark-timesInside the Blu-Ray collection there is a guide to every story and more context on how each one fits into the larger narrative of Time Lord Victorious, written by producer James Goss.Shame that there’s no exclusive short story, but I think the way they’re doing the booklet is spot on. There’s actual meaning to it, rather than it simply be a disc pressing of old stories.

Act 1: The Bringers of Death Newsletter: The Dawn of the Kotturuh Annual: The Guide to the Dark Times Big Finish: Master Thief/Lesser Evils
Act 2: The Time Lord Victorious TV: The Waters of Mars BBC Books: The Knight, The Fool and The Dead
Act 3: The Doctors Gather DWM: Monstrous Beauty Big Finish: He Kills Me, He Kills Me Not Big Finish: The Enemy of My Enemy BBC Books: All Flesh is Grass BBC Audio: The Minds of Magnox
Act 4: The Daleks’ Exit Strategy Eaglemoss: Mission to the Known Big Finish: Mutually Assured Destruction Eaglemoss: Exit Strategy Big Finish: Genetics of the Daleks Escape Hunt: A Dalek Awakens
Act 5: The Time Fracture Big Finish: Echoes of Extinction [Tenth Doctor] YouTube: UNIT Logs Immersive Theatrical: Time Fracture
Not sure where Daleks! will fit in.

I’m hoping Character Options get on the Time Lord Victorious bandwagon with their B&M sets next year. Doesn’t have to be anything extravagant, but a Doctors set, with variants of our three leads, and a Dalek set should be achievable and ride the hype. The Dalek set could be the Drone & Strategist as they’re just repaints of existing sculpts.
I like the Eaglemoss figurines, but don’t collect them; they’re a little small scale for my liking personally. I might pick them up if they’re ever on sale, though, for the short stories if nothing else.

Just finished the second volume of the Titan Comics contribution. Not my cup of tea, I am afraid. This tries to be epic and even adds a supposedly epic surprise, but I still felt underwhelmed. Maybe I just have growns used to some of the other amazing Doctor Who comics on offer. But these TLV comics just leave me cold. Now I am curious how the books and audios tun out.
