My hope is that Whittaker breaks the unwritten three seasons rule. I'm grateful for all of the time and hard work each actor has put into the role and completely understand if they decide they're ready to leave the part, but the three season rule hovers around every casting announcement as a perceived end date of an actor's tenure in the role and I'd like to see an actor go longer just to buck the perceptions. Plus, I really enjoy her Doctor, especially after the strong work last season.

It's interesting to me that the least 'Doctorish' was Chris Eccleston. A Northern suede-head in leather jacket and DMs isn't how anyone expected Doctor Who to come back on air all those years ago, I imagine. And yet after he left, the actors have all been very 'Doctor-y'.
Regarding gender, it 'shouldn't' matter, but beyond fan circles, has Jodie been seen as a success? I truly don't know. And would that perceived success - or perceived un-success - have any bearing on who would play the role in future? As I said, I would just like the next Doctor to be played by the person best suited to the role, beyond any other consideration.
Looks like he (paz?) has deleted. That's two nights on the trot that members have deleted shortly after contributing to an active thread discussion. Was it paz who deleted his account? A user name @experience1 seems to have deleted, but I don't know if that was the display name paz or not.

Thandie Newton is my choice for next doctor, but I suspect we will get an Relative unknown, like David and matt were..........
Idris Elba would make a cool doctor, much better than a bond.......l
But I hope we get better stories for a 14th doctor, the 13th has been served pretty poor in story quality for her tenure.........

Hello again.
Well, I hope Jodie stays for as long as she wants the role and feels the stories are taking her Doctor's character forward. Season 12 saw some great development for 13.
For me, Jo Martin should be the next Doctor. She has this gravitas that reminds me of the First, Third and Ninth Doctors. I think she would make an excellent choice based on the impact of her brief appearances, if her stories were consistently engaging.
As others have said, you audition a load of actors and one actor will spring out and you'll say, "Yep, that's the 14th Doctor!" And the whole magical adventure is renewed once more.

Another vote for Jo Martin from me. From the moment that Ruth 'de-Arched' (is there a proper Who word for when a Time Lord does that?) she absolutely radiated 'Doctorness' and I hoped we were being given a sneak preview of the future.
I didn't hide what I thought about the finale (the only let down in a terrific season imo) and one of the things which disappointed me most about it was that RuthDoctor was explained away as a past event, not a future possibility.
Still, a bit of timey-wimey-scripty hand-waving could fix that I'm sure. Here's one idea: when Jodie's Doctor eventually regenerates, the event that causes it is so chaotic and randomising that her famous Rassilonic nuclei (maybe with a bit of help from the TARDIS) seek safety in a tried and tested rearrangement, a body which they 'know' worked out well before and will be a safe port in a regeneration storm. Perhaps the Matrix encounter feeds into it too and - burst of orange light - Jo's Doctor is back from 'retirement' to do the time warp again!

I like your idea!😀Jo is a brilliant Doctor 😊Also it would reinforce what The Great Curator said about revisiting a few favorite faces down the line😉 I wonder if the Doctor wore Jo’s face a second time would she have the same personality as we saw her in “fugitive” (sort of a direct continuation) or would she have Jo’s face but with a slightly different personality?

That's an interesting question - where does the Doctor's personality come from when they regenerate? It seems ready-formed, with a bit of regeneration instability sometimes. Each personality can grow over time like ours do, but it must come with the body to some extent.
Having said that, wouldn't she be a rather different personality second time around? Maybe more informal, if that's the right word, a bit more 'new series'.
Jo Doctor II would have the experiences of many other lives since the previous time, and most of them spent away from Gallifrey learning so much more, meeting so many other species and sharing the TARDIS with all those Companions. And of course huge events like marriage to Susan's grandmother, their children and their lives, Susan - and the moment of rebellion the First Doctor (as I will always call him!) stole the TARDIS and zoomed off with Susan to start the lives we know. I think she would be the same, but different!

I think she would be the same, but different! Part of it feels informed by their predecessor's final moments, to some extent. Each Doctor being a reaction to whatever last thought they were clinging to at the time. Whether consciously or subconsciously. I like to think for the Fourth Doctor, eyes rolling from companion to companion, it was something along the lines of: And that's what stuck, as he slipped away. Maybe some of those impulses are still rattling around inside the brain after regeneration? Not necessarily shaping the entire personality, but nudging certain aspects of the renewal here and there towards certain personal preferences (e.g. In his last moments, the Second Doctor wanted a sense of authority, so...). I mean, I'm still hoping that Jo Martin is a future Doctor or at least not pre-Hartnell because of the police box (and maybe the name Doctor) - also The Timeless Children didn't give much of an answer on that front, just had Martin shrug about it in a dream sequence. Phoebe Waller-Bridge would never do it, but I love to imagine. Same with Richard Ayoade - I think they're both too writer-director-y these days to sign up for an acting job that kills any hope of doing anything else for the duration. Who else could I imagine as the Doctor? Riz Ahmed, Aiden Gillen, Colin Macfarlane, Lindsay Duncan, Ewen Bremner, Warwick Davis and probably a whole bunch of other people I'm forgetting about right now. Snap. That would honestly be so much fun. She's got the irreverence down pat, going by Fleabag.

Another woman in the role.
And if we are picking names*..Jo Martin (I know..obvious choice. But in the few minutes we had the Ruth Doctor on screen she absolutely owned it), Josette Simon, Mina Anwar, Holliday Grainger, Yasmin Bannerman, Pippa Bennett Warner, Parminder Nagra, Eva Green, Meera Syal, Marianne Jean Baptiste, Gugu Mbatha Raw and Ruth Wilson to name but a few (I really haven't put much thought into this as you can tell..😊).
*Honorary mention of course to three of the finest Dames in the land : Dame Maggie Smith, Dame Judi Dench and Dame Diana Rigg. Sadly wouldn't happen in a million years, but the mere thought of the Dowager Countess of Grantham, M or Olenna Tyrell scene stealing their way around the TARDIS amuses me greatly.

@catabark and @paz have both deleted their accounts in rapid succession? (assuming they are not both one and the same of course..) If they are 'guesting' then I hope both are okay and remind both that the forum is always here if they ever need it to be. 😊 Very suspicious. Anyway, let's hope Jodie stays for a while.
