So... when's Matt Smith going to sign up? Seriously, though, congrats to BF on achieving what I thought impossible.

I just had the thought - are we going to get the Ninth Doctor's very first story now? We came close with selimpensfiction's Battle Scars but it would be amazing to start the Official Ninth Doctor BF run at the moment after his regeneration!

Let’s not kid ourselves here. Eccleston couldn’t give a flying fig about playing the Ninth Doctor again. He’s just here for the lunches.

Always interesting to listen to Eve Myles talking about sitting in make up, turning her head, then getting smacked by Barrowman's dong in the face 😱 lol Why worry?Over a little thing like that! (The old jokes are still the best)

I just want to say well done to Big Finish for this announcement. I’ve been critical of them the past few days over the debacle regarding Echoes of Extinction, the lack of marketing for Out of Time or the frequent gaffes and confusion in their news pieces. This Eccleston news has been spot on; a couple of nice quotes, clear about the formats available and what the range will consist of. And from what I gather this was sent out to the press a couple of days ago under embargo to ensure it reaches the masses.

Eccleston's book goes into more about his own mental health at the time. It was when his anorexia was at it's worst and he was having some massively dark times. Add to that a working environment that he felt encouraged bullying from the top, and Barrowman thinking exposing himself was "banter" (something the Torchwood guys have said he did on their set too) and you can see why he was so reluctant to return to the show for so long, bringing him back into that mindset. Barrowman was probably the least of his issues with the set but it's one Chris has cited as being unprofessional and making crew who weren't the stars with clout to complain very uncomfortable. His book seems to have helped him exorcise a lot of demons. He sought help for his (lack of) weight issues and mental health. Seeing on the convention circuit how happy his work made people also seems to have reinforced a fresh start with the show. He now talks about it in interviews rather than a few words and moving on. Always interesting to listen to Eve Myles talking about sitting in make up, turning her head, then getting smacked by Barrowman's dong in the face 😱 lol Seriously, what a pathetic & offensive thing to do. I hope Barrowman has "mellowed" or at least grown up a bit.

I am genuinely stunned. I never thought this would happen, legitimately believed that there was zero chance Chris Eccleston would ever return to the role. Holy crap.

BF deserve some serious congratulations. I had not seen the Doctor Who fandom being so unanimously happy for months. After some serious - and often unjustified in my opinion - constant backlash, I think it's really wholesome.

I'm sure they could fit a new companion in somewhere, Charlie Higson's short story The Beast of Babylon is set between the defeat of the Nestene Consciousness at the end of Rose when he briefly leaves & returns after the events of that story. That story actually directly plugs the gap and doesn’t leave any space for more stories. That’s not to say that BF couldn’t just ignore the continuity of that story. And actually, I hope they do. A short arc with Eccleston meeting a new companion before parting ways with them and deciding to return to Rose would be nice. I think they'd have to do a sort of anti-companion. Someone the doctor doesn't want to be traveling with, because he doesn't want to travel with anyone, but is forced to bring along due to circumstances. A traditional companion wouldn't fit within the 9th Doctors arc.

The pandemic is playing havoc with actor's ability to find work, so once very busy actors are suddenly sitting at home. The pro vs. con math works out a lot differently than it did 6 months ago.
Not that I don't believe those two and Eccleston would be positive and enthusiastic about the job, just that if their reason for not going back was that they had done Doctor Who and wanted to devote time for other things, that just isn't a factor any more.

Of course, it'd have been more of a surprise if his name hadn't popped up as a contributor on BF's website a few months back... I guess the real test on how much he's mellowed will be if he records one with Barrowman. Bit unfair to query whether Eccleston has "mellowed", its like blaming him for the issues. He just didn't enjoy working with Barrowman, I can imagine Barrowman being quite annoying to work with. If Barowman behaved like that in almost any other workplace he'd be dismissed without notice for gross misconduct and quite rightly so. He was very much on the wrong side of the line

I've said this before on other Eccleston wishlist threads, but I hope that there might be a less-traditional story or two tucked within the dozen (!!!!) that are on the way. I think the Ninth Doctor would shine in a story like "Urgent Calls".
I know Nick Briggs confirmed himself as one of the writers and I'd imagine we'd get the other tried & true names to bring us new stories, but I'm hoping for some new creative voices to join the mix as well.

Fair play to Jason, his skills of persuasion must be superior to Moffat's if he succeeded in 2020 where Moffatt failed in 2013

My actual first reaction to the news was a string of unprintable profanity, but suffice to say, I am absolutely shocked. I never thought Eccleston would come back. To me, this is a bigger shock than Tom Baker signing on.
Pigs have flown, hell has frozen over, and Big Finish has done the impossible.

Fair play to Jason, his skills of persuasion must be superior to Moffat's if he succeeded in 2020 where Moffatt failed in 2013 I suspect it has more to do with Eccleston being in a better place in regards to his experiences on Doctor Who in 2020 than he was in 2013. Conventions and writing his book seem to have led to him making peace with what happened and with how important his Doctor was to a lot of people. I'm really looking forward to these. It'll be amazing to hear Eccleston in the role for the first time in fifteen years.

I know this is off topic but its really poor behaviour from him. I wouldn't want to work with someone like that, in fact I would make a formal complaint.
