I was won over by Peter Capaldi in Series 9, when he began to channel past Doctors, more consciously. His check trousers and coat being a mix of Cushing and Troughton. What I particularly loved ( not sure which episode - Magician's Apprentice or Under the Lake?) was where they were venturing down a corridor and Clara was asking questions, and he gave a back flip of his hands as if to say "shush - get behind me" and then he wandered ahead, consumed by eager curiosity rather than caution . It could have been either of the aforementioned actors or Tom Bakers portrayal. It really spelt out to long term watchers that this is the same character, in a different body, but still there all the same. Little touches from the actor that showed his pedigree as a fan of past actors in the same role. I was very sorry that he left, as he and the episodes he was given were getting better all the time. He had three series, but it seemed it was cut short at its best. His best episodes are right up at the top of nu-who for my liking. I love all this 12 love! I definitely agree with you he should have had a longer era! He should have been on for 6 years rather than 3! 😊 Well he can have all the years he wants if he ever does BF lol...where they can improve even more...geez that man and a ghost story -lovely

Another series with him would have been great. I know at the time Steven Moffat left, there was talk of Capaldi staying on, but I'm not sure that was ever really on the cards. Yeah - I get from the overall tone of his leaving, that he would have stayed, but 'higher up' it was decided it was time for a change. The ratings were headed downward, new blood, younger actor, etc. He was a bit muted and circumspect in his choice of words, which fuelled the usual 'chatter'. Some believe he was the first since Colin to to have had the decision made for him. For myself, I don't know the truth, and don't go for 'theories' but he has been reserved himself since departing. Anyhow - he was/is one of the best in my books

Anyhow - he was/is one of the best in my books I'd hate to think he was pushed rather than jumped, but I feel you may be right. I remember reading in an interview with Alex Kingston (I think), that he was finding the schedule pretty gruelling - maybe that was a factor. I also remember him saying to a little girl who had come to have an autograph signed pretty early in his tenure - possibly before his first episode aired - that he hoped to play The Doctor for many years (I think that exchange might be on YouTube somewhere). I do wonder if the high-ups - those mystical, overpaid enigmas - did feel that a younger Doctor was called for? Perhaps we'll never know - but for three series, to bring my rambling back on topic - that got that right!

Warriors of the Deep had more than its fair share of issues, but for my money, Peter Davison was pretty much perfect throughout. While all about him was occasionally lapsing into shambles, The Fifth Doctor was heroic, stoic, funny and very Doctor-like. Even his reactions to the poor old Myrka were played 100% for real. A great performance amidst a most troubled story.

the Eyeless in Under The Lake are the creepiest thing done great effect Agreed. That's another very underrated story, I think. It might just be my favourite from Series 9.
As for the scene in Kinda - absolutely agreed. The way the camera travelled through Tegan's eye and into this horrific fairy-tale realm is great. For once, the fact that it is recorded on video actually enhances it!

I remember watching this on VHS post Uni catch-up on 4 years of releases, with the family and they said that the story wasn't too strong, narratively, but it looked really good. They also took offence at Michael Grade's Room 101 and the selection of the notorious clip of the Mykra, as being an unjustified cheap shot. I know it would have been better with low lighting, but the sets were impressive, as was the underwater tank sequence. It looks pretty impressive to me visually, and it has in a guest star slot, Ian McCulloch, star of Video Nasty Zombie Flesh Eaters, plus Ingrid Pitt, and the guy that ended up doing the furniture adverts in a tuxedo. It has its faults which bugger up the good stuff, but yes, there is more to like than not if you don't have a high minded 'I could have done better' disposition.

I think the story was pretty sound, but I think there are too many production issues. although the underwater shots of the sea base are impressive. I do remember saying to my classmates at the time, before it aired, that they should watch it because the Sea Devils are back - and they are amazing. Those skinny samurais with un-tucked masks that marched out of the dry ice soon made me regret my recommendation, I'm sorry to say. Watching it in retrospect, knowing what I'm in for, I can enjoy the many good things about it - I particularly enjoyed Neilson staggering around blinded, straight into the path of the monsters, for example! But Peter Davison is amazing in this, I think, and the high-point of the whole thing.
And you're right about Room 101. Michael Grade inviting everyone to laugh at the story was a horrible moment, and not one that endeared him to me - and probably a few others!

To give credit to timegirl there is enough material and story in the episodes to tie in to her own head-canon. Maybe he loved her more than she realised/reciprocated? I can appreciate it myself as a tangent as it does not contradict the way he reacted to her fate onscreen. That's the great thing about fan-fiction - different pathways or possibilities.

One day we may see a Vinyl version eh.....

I like Matt Smith and would like to see him back in the fold too, but Peter Capaldi put a lot of consideration into his performance that went beyond the solid and commendable research of Matt Smith, that fed into Capaldi's considerable acting experience. Right now, I think the range needs these two actors onboard.

Keeping on the positive aspects of the show regardless of our opinions lol on its twists and turns Marek Antons Destroyer is a great prosthetic in Battlefield Battlefield is a great story all round: it looks fantastic, it pushes the boundaries of what the show can do and introduces us to some great characters. It’s just a shame that there are a few dodgy elements (Boom! I mean, seriously?) and the pacing lurches in the second half.
