If you can wait till early December as you indicate...where's the harm in waiting a few weeks more? January would be one month removed from that. I fail to see - honestly - why December would be fine and January would be an insult/disaster/impossibility. It's what the BBC would find 'fine'. December 2016 would still be in 2016 therefore it wouldn't be a whole year with only one episode. As I said, Doctor Who is the BBC's biggest money-spinner so why risk an entire year without their money-making series? Well, in the spirit of Tony's post - we'll draw a line. We won't know till later in the year either way so we're on a hiding to nothing going back and forth. Time will tell, it always does...

Can we quote this back to you in a year's time? I don't mind, although I'd probably be too busy emailing a complaint to the BBC if it does end up airing in January for some reason.

Well, it was more that by this week next year - IE THE FIRST WEEK OF 2017 - we'd know for definite exactly how many episodes aired in 2016.

Ahh, this is the source of the 2017 stories I'm afraid. Read very carefully what he does and does not say. They are making a full series in 2016. They are not making a handful of specials. They have no idea when said series will air. There is no confirmation here that thete will be a series in 2016, just that the next thimg we get will be a full series and Christmas specual and it will havr been made in 2016. Fits perfectly with a 2016 Christmas special and a January series launch, especially considering an autumn series would require them to be shooting now and they haven't even cast a companion. Yep. On the bright side, this should be one hell of a year for Big Finish.

Regardless....we're getting a Series 10. It will be 12 eps and Christmas and beyond that we only know Capaldi's hinting it will be his last and we'll get a new companion. That would really be too bad. I want to see more of him, particularly under a different show runner.

Given what the S10 trailer alludes to, figured it's time to bump this up.
So, how will 12 fall, in light of more recent developments?

Based on the episode 12 summary and the fact that Moffat says that regeneration is not death but choosing to carry on... I think the Doctor will be mortally wounded in the season finale, choose not to regenerate and then continue a terminal existence until something snaps him out of it in the Christmas special. Which means all really has to be lost in ep 12 - which means Bill is gonna die. Maybe Nardole too. Maybe Missy. Maybe Kate. Maybe Vastra. Who knows. It'll hit the fan though.
After all, ep 12 is apparently the darkest hour and the Xmas special is a redemption story. I actually think this so hard that I'm worried I've spoiled myself.

But yeah, that shot of the Doctor with regen energy coming from his hand could be how this series finishes, leaving it for Christmas to be an hour long version of the tenth Doctor's long farewell, only doing something slightly more interesting with any luck.

I think it should be really BIG. Nine went out saving Rose, ten went out saving Wilf, Eleven went out stupidly-over-the-top. Twelve should go out like four, holding on just long enough to save the universe.

After seeing the Graham Norton interview: Either there'll be some timey wimey stuff (Moffat's era dies the way it lived), or it will end with the Regeneration, and the Christmas special will be set in his head in the style of Circular Time, or he'll have a Flashback to when he visited Susan off-screen.
