Will be giving the set a chance, and more intrigued by the second volume, but blimey I thought the trailer was really rough. Also I think they’re putting themselves on the back foot by trying to sell this as being in the present day (well technically the future if it’s 15 years after 2011!), but are using promo pictures of the cast - they’re meant to be twice that age now and as minor as it may seem, I think it does have an impact on the imagery the mind creates and what the stories will be trying to portray. They actually specified that it’s set 15 years from when the series started, rather than when it ended. And Rani is 30 years old in this as well.

So it’s in the present day and Rani twice the age of what’s being portrayed on the promotional material; that’s exactly what I said. The 15 years post-2011 is because the news article wasn’t explicit about whether it was from SJA starting or after it finished.

I think Here Today is my favourite out of this set. Not only is it a fun, sentimental story, but it just feels like a SJA episode. Some really neat callbacks and references, not just to the show but other spin offs. Anjli and Daniel have really good chemistry. I was slightly worried going into this set that because it’s audio format, their performance might lose that fun spark, but it’s all still there. Sometimes it feels like we haven’t had a 12 year gap at all. Patricia is a great character too. You can just tell Joseph Lidster cares so much about SJA and its characters.

Beyond Bannerman Road is a curious one. I liked every story and the characters are there and true. It feels like it grows in confidence to step away from SJA a little more each story, to the point there’s only one or two nods in third one. It does still carries the spirit of SJA, remaining very heartfelt throughout.
I’m very curious about where they will take this range moving forward, so will be back for the second set.

Overall a really enjoyable set. The first story is undoubtedly the strongest but all of them feel like a really satisfying continuation of the Sarah Jane Adventures. Rani and Clyde are both written to be adults but are unmistakably the same characters that we left just under 12 years ago. The second story I found very similar to 'Skin Deep' from Lady Christina, I still can't put my finger on why but was unsurprised to find that they were both written by James Goss. Still, a strong story. I lost my way with the final story a little so it might require a relisten for me but I wasn't bored in any sense. Eagerly looking forward to Volume 2.

I thought it was a strange little set. Every story is fine in itself, but I don’t buy into our characters and where they’re supposed to be or what’s supposed to have happened. It feels like they can’t decide whether it’s The Sarah Jane Adventures without its titular lead, or they’re going to do their own thing whilst honouring what’s come before.
Part of it seems like they’ve forgotten there’s 10 years between SJA ending and the character of Sarah Jane dying. Listening to the set you’d be forgiven for thinking they happened at the same time because Rani doesn’t really seem to have grown; she’s just become Sarah Jane prior to SJA, which I struggle to believe as Sarah would’ve actively put Rani on the right path and avoided the “mistakes” she made. I also don’t believe Rani & Clyde won’t have seen each other since the funeral; that’s not what their characters are like. Similarly I don’t think Rani would avoid Bannerman Road long-term. And there’s not even any drama to come from that; it’s over and done with by the end of the first episode ready to be resumed come the next set. We change, we grow, we move on, but some things remain constant and in this case I think some of the decisions made about the characters don’t ring true.
I also didn’t buy into Clyde’s arc throughout the set. Mentioning he’s going to be a dad and he’s scared a few times doesn’t constitute a storyline. The Phoenix reveal rang hollow and I don’t think Daniel Anthony portrayed it very well.
There’s some lovely moments, mainly the quieter pieces, such as Rani’s interactions with Patricia and Tiff in their respective stories. I liked the framing device of Here Today. Whilst I felt Mina Anwar was patchy, the addition of Gita in Destination: Wedding was a delight. And The Witching Tree had a great concept and shows glimmers of what this range could be; it feels more assured than the prior instalments.
Not a great start in my eyes, but intrigued for volume two and I think that’ll cement how the series pans out. I’m currently not seeing the justification for this as a range, rather than something akin to the Torchwood monthly range, but I’m happily to be swayed otherwise.

Not a huge fan of this cover. I know the only stock images that exist of these characters are from 10+ years ago but the first cover at least is presented to be set years after (with what looks like a recent image of Anjli?) Anyway, that aside, I’m very much looking forward to this set.

Updated synopsis’ for each story: www.bigfinish.com/releases/v/rani-takes-on-the-world-the-revenge-of-wormwood-2728Star-Crossed Diversion sounds intriguing and reminds me of something between The Temptation of SJS where Rani and Clyde ended up on, effectively a parallel Earth where the Trickster won, and The Empty Planet where they were isolated. Luke will be a great addition and it will be nice to hear what he has been up to since working for UNIT. Ghost of BR sounds very exciting and finale-esque. I am very curious to know how Wormwood returns and what that will mean for the gang.

I passed on this when it first came out. Then I recently listened to the second season of Doctor Who: Redacted which included Rani. I was a bit more intrigued. Then I heard Liz Myles was writing a story in the second set. So, I bundled up and got both. I just finished listening to this first set. It was quite enjoyable with enough callbacks to SJA. In the third story there is a reference to Doctor Who: Redacted, with someone wondering whether the Blue Box Files would be better to look into the mystery.
Anyway, I am looking forward to listening to the second set. I just unzipped that and will be rotating that with some 9th and 7th Doctor stories.
