Created this discussion thread ready for the tournament because I still think it's worth it, despite the other thread I made about the World Cup, and there was one made for the Euro's last year.
Having thought about it, I think the World Cup is worth watching for me anyway. I can't really speak for anyone else.

I adore football but I am, along with many, boycotting this World Cup due to the corruption of it even taking place in Qatar, the 6000 plus migrant workers who were killed to build stadiums twice as fast as could be done safely with their bodies thrown into concrete, and the backwards positions of the Qatari regime on LGBT rights.

I hadn't heard about bodies being thrown into concrete, but the rest I fully agree with. Will be giving the World Cup a miss this time round.

We are showing it at work, but that's because there's been a lot of requests to show it

It shouldn't be held in Qatar, but it's still The World Cup!

Had short discussion with dad 2day who is big football fan and who played all his life and still trains the kids. He is boycotting. He even got into a row at the pub tonight because he says he is boycotting and the others were „ not very nice people“ ( I am paraphrasing). I see what FIFA says with that they might have changed a tiny bit in Katar, but I also see the point of my dad because of the human abuse, the slave Labour, the personal insults to German politicians and activists and the attack against German queer people. Right now, I actually think FIFA has it wrong- not much has changed. But were they just bought and bribed as my dad says? I have not been there, I do not know. Most likely will be a smaller turnout since beer is now banned and the typical picture I have of these fans is rowdy drunks. Since that row with German politicians and activists, this cup is very controversial in my country and they did not advertise themselves as he forward country they want to be seen as. In football terms, Katar has shoot an „ own goal“ and soured relations with German fans. I won‘t be watching. And even I could be roused to public viewing on previous occasions, I even got myself the necessary uniform costumes ( or whatever these things are called in sport fan circles)- you know, the shirts the players wear and the silly hats and scarves. Not this time.

He took the money from the gay press & seemed to be happy with having gay fans. Now he is a hypocrite scum.

He is actively promoting the tournament..yet the Aussie press are giving him a wide berth and not "rocking the boat".. bloody/no morals money? I guess everyone has a price.

Aside from all the glaring ethical problems of having Qatar as host...
Really, no booze? At this sport, and having to spend weeks in Qatar, no booze?

Not this time. Most (maybe not all) of those politicians and activists you’ve mentioned might not care who was hosting the World Cup if Germany won it. Even some of the tories here in the UK seem fine with Qatar hosting it.

Even some of the tories here in the UK seem fine with Qatar hosting it. That is politics for you. The Katar minister lashing out at GERmany said ONE thing that was right and the absolute truth. He said that the issues and the whole fight was just used for political gain and to improve the standing of certain politicians. Even idiots who could not care less about women or queer rights could now accuse because Kater is the big bad. Yes of course a German win would be used as such a tool, too. BUT the bad thing and the real issue here is- the whole sports feeling, the euphoria the team spirit is completely missing. At other world cups, you saw German flags everywhere and everyone was wearing the shirts and neighbors and friends met up to watch and have BBQ. We even watched while I lived in NZ!!!! I repeat, I am NO football fan, but I bought and wore the fan gear!!!! Now- no Flags and to be honest, nobody I know gives a f*** if we win. No spirit at work, nothing of the feeling of previous cups. There is even some feeling, as members above say, that being associated with the thing is seen as negative. So yeah, maybe a win is used it politics, but the impact is not even close to previously where even when we did NOT win the German team was welcomed back in big party as heroes and the chancellor congratulated them. Just because so many people do not care and or boycott the thing. so no, this is not the same. And even your attempt to arouse some team spirit ( „ we will beat you, come on, stand up for your side and show me some attitude“) falls on very indifferent ears.... sorry, I sadly cannot be arsed. You are welcome to the win. Have fun. Get some joy out of it if you can. Maybe YOUR politicians can spin a positive emotion out of it for a change, the certainly need some good news and an event they can rally behind. But sadly, the same will not work this time for Germany. So make the most of it. I can see you want it to be good and a chance for Katar and it must be frustrating we all are such spoil sports. Nothing is worse when you really look forward to something and nobody else cares. It is close to painful. It must be like me trying to show my amazing pictures with Colin to my mum yesterday and she just said „ Go away with you crazy people“. I actually totally get where you are coming from. So as I said, YOU have fun and do not let us sad sacks spoil it for you.

Virtue signalling is at an all time high for this World Cup, but those hands are still out for the money.
Nobody - in their right mind - should be in Qatar giving credence to the regime there. Qatar are allowed to run their country their own way, but FIFA and the 32 competing nations don't have to be a part of it. They chose to be, purely because of the money and that is all it's about. Full stop.
At least Ireland did the honourable thing and refused to qualify!!!

I can probably bear to watch the World Cup this year because I've already watched Formula One racing in the Middle East, which includes Qatar and Saudi Arabia. There's also Bahrain and Abu Dhabi in the mix, not 100% sure what they're like, although Bahrain did have controversy in 2011. Maybe it would be better to discuss this on the other thread related to the world cup this year, or at least merge the two. notthebigfinishforum.freeforums.net/thread/7874/right-qatar-hosting-world-cup

This is my view:
The principal of international sport is that you put aside politics and differences between countries for a brief while. So, you can either be like me and have little to no interest in sport and be happy to condemn appalling things like the treatment of migrant builders by Qatar, or you can accede to the principal and overlook such things, or you can be a hypocrite and follow the sport but condemn *everybody* you disappove of.
