This is my view: The principal of international sport is that you put aside politics and differences between countries for a brief while. So, you can either be like me and have little to no interest in sport and be happy to condemn appalling things like the treatment of migrant builders by Qatar, or you can accede to the principal and overlook such things, or you can be a hypocrite and follow the sport but condemn *everybody* you disappove of. I’d like to think I’m in the middle category. The last World Cup was held in a less than savoury country, who back then weren’t as bad as they are now.

There is SOME value in the message that "Sport unites people" and "there might be some positive change effected in Katar because of this event". I hate to see things purely black and white, but I also acknowledge that there are still MANY things in Katar that are not good.
But of course you are right, there will be plenty of hypocrites around who will behave as you say. But hopefully not ALL of the fans are like that.

Better than giving everybody *except* Qatar a free pass. Remember, kids, it's OK to be a totalatarian dictatorship that oppresses minorities, but whatever you don't renege on a deal with FIFA over installing airconditioning.

Aside from all the glaring ethical problems of having Qatar as host...
Really, no booze? At this sport, and having to spend weeks in Qatar, no booze?
Ell Oh Ell
Probably a good thing in a lot of cases. It might affect fans behaviour. I’ve never had alcohol at a football match.

England vs Iran result {Spoiler} England 6-2 Iran. Some questionable decisions and a few weird moments, such as Iran's goalkeeper not going off when injured.

England vs Iran result {Spoiler} England 6-1. Some questionable decisions and a few weird moments, such as Iran's goalkeeper not going off when injured. I feel sorry for the Iranian players. They sit between a rock and a very hard place. They took a stance against the regime and did not sing the anthem (which will have repercussions for them if they come back home) BUT with all what had been going on in Iran, it was just not enough, so Iranian people did actually wave about the English flag and applauded when the Iranian team was steamrolled.
So these guys are hated by their government and hated by their people.
I wonder why they did play at all.

I can see your point there. That being said. Iran should probably have had only one goal, or England 7. They had a penalty for something, whereas we didn’t have a penalty for that was worse. Gotta give Iran credit for trying though.

Well, today is a day where in German news, the loss of Germany in their first game was only a footnote compared to the photo of the German team holding their mouths closed to protest against the ban of the "One Love" armbands. The sponsors for the German team, some big German supermarket chains, have also withdrawn their support as of now to also protest the ban. In protest, the German federal foreign affairs minister was sitting in the audience, wearing said banned armband and she made a point of sitting next to the FIFA president, waving the armband around.
WTF.
This tournament has completely devolved into kindergarten politics.
Sports has become a complete side-show.
So yeah, besides all the big politics and big news going on, apparently, some people were also kicking a ball around, but nobody really cared.
In other news, some rebels at work had hacked the TV in the cantina- that TV is only for work related news and advertisement and is supposedly not connected to the Internet. Someone managed to bring the German game online, which caused a real scandal during late lunch because nobody knew how this had been done, who had done it, and how the heck to switch it off again. During a "real" world cup, this would have been met with cheers and people milling into the cantina to watch, but apparently, the issue was brought to official light because some people were offended and complained.
Honestly, people, this is another one of these days where words simply fail me.

As an Englishman, I’m gutted for Wales. I actually wanted them to win. The only way they can go through is if they beat us on Tuesday.

My position exactly on this and all other TV sport Why? The latter part of the sentence I mean. I have zero interst in sport of any kind and would find watching TV sport on a par with watching paint dry. Don't wish to be rude or cause offence to the many who feel differently, and I recognise I am in a very small minority, but I find it impossible to get worked up or excited about sport of any kind.

The hosts have been eliminated. It's not like Qatar were ever getting out of their group anyway! Another milestone for this World Cup... earliest elimination of the host country from the tournament.
It seems oil money can buy you the tournament but it can't buy you a decent national team!

Tonight’s the biggest match so far in my opinion. It’s going to be very difficult for both England and Wales to qualify for the knockout stage.
