Colin Alone by Una McCormack.
I was going to wait until the end before I posted up any ramble about this latest Torchwood Boxset. Aliens Next Door I liked well enough, but this second story is an absolute cracker, my favourite Una McCormack contribution by a long way, and a showcase for a recast Colin. I wasn't keen on the idea of Ramon Tikaram not playing Colin, but this is eased by the extras telling me it was entirely Tikaram's decision (I hope he continues to work with BF though). Everyone excels in this, really tapping into the almost Prisoner-esque qualities of the script, but Joplin Sibtain is excellent as the abandoned main character, lurching from one unsettling disaster to another. I hope for more from him. A brilliant episode.

It's amazing how one throwaway line in one episode of Doctor Who can just throw a Torchwood character's continuity into a right disaster. I was expecting them to mention Gwen and Rhys having a second kid.

Hmmm. James is nearly 50 so .. My first thought was Kate Winslet may have done some for Torchwood as well when at BF but he says "for anyone younger..." like millenials won't know the lady in question so well which...clearly will never be the case with Winslet as long as Titanic is still a massive piece of pop culture.

I really liked this set. Barrowman - and I've said it since way before the "cancellation" is not very good on audio for me, so to focus on the characters BF have built seems not just logical but preferable. So often, a Jack story would take me out of the moment with a line reading that was meant to be comic and comes off angry, or it's epic and comes off flippant. Barrowman's biggest strength as an actor is a charisma that he loses without the visual part of the performance.
I'm not surprise that the series COULD be setting it up as a goodbye to Eve Myles. I'm sure we all remember her infamous night of Tweeting that BF wasn't the same and she'd never play Gwen again. Add that to her general lack of availability and yeah..I'd be looking to use what value she has as a really big sendoff for the character in the linear timeline. They can always do standalone stories with her if the chance arises - being dead years before BF got the licence never stopped Owen, Tosh and Ianto!

Because from her recent activity this certainly doesn't seem to be the case... Well, I'm the source, as are others, because....I saw it and we discussed it on the forum in real time! Like her recording dates for this set, it wasn't recently! At a guess? 6 years back? But since her parts for this set were recorded 4 years back - it's not as big a gap as that sounds. BF wouldn't answer queries on her involvement and all of a sudden a new Gwen story was announced. She was back! Then...she wasn't because of the "re-cast" in the early "Among Us.." sets. So I'd understand entirely if they wanted an "end" for her...then could always revisit as and when she was available. Nobody wants a disaster like Dark Eyes 4 again where Ruth Bradley was booked up but they couldn't reschedule so Molly had to be - for the culmination of her whole story - recast with a very clunky exposition. Anyone else able to narrow it down to when this was?

She blamed it on "being drunk that night" from what I recall..

It was like 2016 when she said she was done playing Gwen then did more recordings after. Eve Myles is brilliant and im really glad shes done so much BF now, Blind Terror is excellent.

This happened back in 2016 when she was pretty much retiring from acting altogether, but then being offered Keeping Faith kept her going for a few more years so she kept doing BF as well.
But she’s pretty much retired again now since lockdown. Her scenes for Misty Eyes were recorded back in 2019 alongside Dissected. Then Alexandria and Kai recorded their scenes a few days before lockdown started.

Yes, I didn't want to add the drunk weekebd part in case that was mis-remembering, I can't recall if she said that herself or it was something at a con etc. It was radio silence from BF afterwards (and..6 years back that was a BIT rarer, now we expect it!) and it was only when the next Gwen standalone came out that it appeared she'd changed her mind. Then when what was being promoted as, essentially, TW Series 5 with Aliens Among Us came out and Gwen was..Ng, it fuelled all sorts of speculation once more. And not unjust speculation either - Eve said audio wasn't really her thing, the draw was seeing the old gang and that didn't happen recording separately, that the (rumoured but she kinda confirmed) failed pitch to Netflix for a new series of Torchwood kinda soured her on the whole show. It wasn't personal against BF, even that weekend as she made clear. I want to say she was interested in midwifery and was talking about leaving acting altogether? She's obviously done quite a bit since but since it seems she's the least likely of the cast to want to return consistentl and which, if she was talking about doing so - even when sloshed - 6 years back then hasn't recorded in 3 years? Giving her an end makes sense. Gives Eve something to play, a real Gwen arc. Also gives BF that end point too if Eve does decide she's done. The entire premise of the show was that working for Torchwood is a death sentence with Jack being the contrast to it, watching generations come and die only to start again. BF have played about with that from all sorts of eras. If BF have shown one thing, they can do Torchwood well without the stars. That said the TV show was always a Gwen show, Jack was the support but Eve had the arcs and handled all the heavy lifting. So she would be a bigger loss than Jack but hey - some of the most loved TW characters are ones we never heard of before BF did their thing.

Loved this set. I, too, have been waiting for the Ng and Gwen confrontation, so Misty Eyes was fabulous and just the right story for me. I still can't forgive Ng for how she turned up and it angers me every time I hear the rest of the TW team treating her as if none of it happened. She killed Gwen's mother, for God's sake! So, yeah. I was amazed at Gwen's restraint.
Colin Alone. What can I say about this one? By the end I almost felt guilty for listening to the ongoing and worsening torture session that was this story. Joplin Sibtain gave a stellar performance. Poor Colin, to lose the love of his life and then have to go through this. But even with how awful this is for him, the story and performances were mesmerizing. I couldn't turn it off.
Those are my two favorite stories so far, but I also just loved that this is a 4 story set. I miss them. The 3 story sets are just not as satisfying.

So...pure speculation on my part...Penelope Keith...(The Good Life, To The Manor Born). And if it is not her...I have at least another fifteen possible candidates...😁

I’m planning to do one episode a week. Ideally Saturday, but didn’t get around to episode 1 till today.
So Aliens Next Door. A quietly sinister opener which also doesn’t waste anytime getting the new arc in place. Orr and Ng makes an odd mix but works well, and Orr continues to be the most interesting character of the continuation era. All in all a promising start.

So are these stories stand-alone? Can you listen to this without previous knowledge? I don't think so. You need some knowledge of the characters, their backgrounds and what has happened previously to understand pretty much all stories, but especially the first two. But Gods Among Us is fantastic. Much better than Aliens Among Us, in my opinion.
