If BF really want me to up my ordering, they could at least give a release date for 'The War Iris Vol 1'. Ha, The War Iris Vol 1. I could get on board with that. Iris would be a hot riot. I can imagine her getting the call from Ollistra...
'Daleks?! Oooh those horrible evil dustbins! Cry 'avoc and let slip the Pandas o' War! Let me just finish me G&T and I'll be right with you...'

I would love to see Iris dealing with the upper echelons of Gallifrey more than the Daleks. I think she'd bring out the best in the war Doctor and they'd get sloshed together on more than one occasion.
As far as the thread goes last months 11 Dr Chronicles. War Doctor Begins and War Master have been excellent. Give it a break when it gets too much, come back when it feels right. A routine that has served me well for a long time now. As for avoiding a range because you feel you might misunderstand due to character development - throw caution to the wind sometimes and just go for it! See how the lack of perspective impacts your enjoyment or if it just screams to you to go back and explore.

I do think there's a problem with Big Finish at present, but I'm struggling to understand why. Some ranges, such as the 3DAs, 8DAs or 11 chronicles, seem to be almost universally lauded, yet others really struggle (Once and Future, 7DAs). And it's a lot of the same people working on both types so I can't identify a particular individual who's missing the mark. I genuinely don't understand what's going wrong, but something is. Some of these problems carried over from the Monthly Adventures in my opinion. The Seventh Doctor stories in particular have been a bit of a mess ever since the original Ace and Hex run came to a close. I think another problem is that because they've consolidated a lot of these ranges down into one single, full-cast range for each Doctor, we've lost a lot of variety that we otherwise would have had. I don't dislike the Noonan First Doctor stories, but I'm kind of bummed that those are the only First Doctor stories we're getting now when before we had Companion Chronicles and Early Adventures to give us stories with the other First Doctor companions. But because it's now just one range, now we have to bring back an older Vicki so we can still have stories with Maureen O'Brien and we can't have original companions by themselves anymore in general because we have to keep the older companions on the payroll still too. It would not surprise me in the slightest if the Second Doctor Adventures boxset next year is announced to have Polly or Zoe returning for that same reason. And to me that's just resulting in a lot of lacklustre storytelling. Maybe I'm being too cynical, I don't know. It's just something that's been really bugging me about this new direction.

No, you’re not alone in that. The initial boxset idea seemed potentially interesting to me - an opportunity for some larger scale tales and some streamlining to allow for more consistency - but it’s ended up being more homogenous than anything. While the MR trilogy format arguably started that, it still allowed for a few standalone stories a year, plus things like the Two Masters trilogy. Until fairly recently, any year could provide a surprise in terms of how many stories each Doctor and companion got, how they were presented, and so on. Given that, a few writers aside, we’re way past BF’s peak in terms of quality, making things more rigid is just an additional issue.
As someone who doesn’t get on with the recasts at all, it also means I’m down to zero new pre-Tom Doctor releases.

An interesting perspective. So rather than the issue being that they're producing too much, it could be that they have too much to fit into too restricted a range. You could be into something there. I can certainly see how that could be.

I'm not sure if the magic is gone. I know I've bought and pre-ordered very little recently, partly because I have a huge backlog of releases I haven't listened to yet, partly because the change in pricing has made Big Finish an expensive indulgence for me. There are some things I want, but I'm waiting to buy till I've listened to more of the stuff on my to-be-listened-to list.

I honestly can't quite put my finger on it .. I haven't quit purchasing any ranges.. From the get go when BF 1st started it was already a Rich hobby- in the last 3-5 years it's now a Very Rich hobby not being in UK. Postage n Handling co$ts I know for an absolute (I will swear on my house) fact is a major issue for a Lot of people I know outside of UK- BF may say outside UK had a "discount" for years but know- not really.. Anyway.
My last major purch$e was Sept/Oct last year I did a AUST$600+ mass order of 4/5/6/7/8th Doctor Ranges.. I am behind in all those ranges Easily 3-4 boxsets each because "L.I.F.E." has happened since then.
Some interesting choices, 1 was shortening some stories to 1 cd, other lengthening from 1 to 2 cds..
It's currently a weird situation IMHO..

Yeah, the change in pricing has really made me reevaluate my spending habits too - and the prices seem like they're constantly creeping up each passing day!

There are some things I want, but I'm waiting to buy till I've listened to more of the stuff on my to-be-listened-to list. Huge backlog, yeah, I can empathise with that. I stopped buying the Torchwood main range when I realised I hadn't listened to anything after series 1 because other titles were getting in the way. I've been listening to my entire BF collection in Doctor order and it's taken me about five years. And I'm only just getting to the New Series stuff! Realistically this means I already own enough Big Finish to last me a lifetime. I have so many good titles I can go back to listen to, I'm not sure why I would continue to shell out big money for the new ones. On the other hand, if I was a new customer, there's so much old, cheap material, that again I'm not sure why I'd buy the expensive new sets. Maybe this is why it sometimes feels like BF are releasing more gimmicky titles, to try to persuade people to buy despite the headwinds.

I wouldn’t say the magic is gone but I definitely felt some burn-out this year and there were long periods where I didn’t listen which I think has helped because I’ve felt more of an urge to catch up on some releases from this year.
I think I’ve only listened to roughly 18 stories this year which is definitely down on previous years.

Yeah, I’m also listening less, in part because I no longer have a one hour each way commute to work, which is when I did most of my listening.
And when I listen at home when my spouse is around (he works from home most of the time), he complains the volume is too loud. The variation between loud sequences and/or music and very soft dialogue means I do often have it playing quite loud in order to hear and understand the soft spoken parts. Quite annoying, I do wish they’d balance the soft and loud parts better.

Yeah, BF really has to be listened to either in the car or on ear/headphones, the sound mix is too inconsistent for anything else. The only problem then is sometimes (looking at you River Song) the theme music comes on and practically ruptures your eardrums.

Yes, the loud theme music while listening on headphones is a definite problem for my ears. I try to quickly lower the volume when I know the theme tune is coming.

If BF really want me to up my ordering, they could at least give a release date for 'The War Iris Vol 1'. Sadly I think that would be way too much "meta" humor for BF. But I would also like to see that.

Go back a few years and the four episodes of Iris Vol 2 are one long glorious spoof of TV 'Doctor Who' of the 60s, 70s, 80s and of course (as it's New Year's Eve) The Movie.
It's in exactly that spirit that I'd love them to do 'The War Iris', but I think you're right, imo BF has become less 'daring' with the passing of time so they probably wouldn't do it now. What a missed opportunity!
