Batman: Superheavy/Bloom - The end of the Scott Snyder run is one that basically reflects on the nature of comics and everything the run had done to this point. Perhaps the weakest arc of the run for what the first half just does with Jim Gordon as Batman while the second half actually moves things forward really well.

The New Teen Titans Vol. 3 - This run is iconic for a reason and honestly it’s a shame that people only seem to know Vol. 7 because of The Judas Contract. This third volume is had made up of a miniseries written to expand the origin of the new characters and Changeling and honestly they’re all very interesting (though Cyborg’s issue has aged poorly). The four issues proper are also great (except for Wally West Midwestern Conservative for that one issue) and really bend the type of story being told. Full thoughts as always in the podcast below.

Aquaman: Death of a King - A misleading title and honestly a misleading book. This is an arc where there are so many things going on and whole issues of action where the storytelling just breaks down under the weight. The ending nearly pulls it together into being something good but it feels as if the characters aren’t allowed to develop or move forward and Geoff Johns just wants off the book as soon as possible.

Green Lantern: Secret Origin - Finally, after some not great Geoff Johns stuff we’re back to good Geoff Johns and his Green Lantern run with a very nice retelling of Hal’s origin that doesn’t actually feel like it overstays it’s welcome while breaking up the larger story of the run

Wonder Woman by George Perez Volume 3 - So if anyone wanted to get into Wonder Woman as a character the Perez run is definitely the way to go. Perez as a writer knows how to craft characters and especially varied female characters, plus this third volume rectifies some of the minor mistakes of earlier in the run. This is also a run of comics that grapples a massive 9 issue story arc really, really well never losing sight of the character drama that makes it real.

Green Arrow: Year One - This is the perfect introduction to the character and one of the perfect books we’ve done for the podcast. It also feels more like a survival story than a superhero story which really helps set it apart as well as Jock’s wonderfully stylized art.

The Sandman: Preludes and Nocturnes - I mean it’s The Sandman, the first eight issues are brilliant but you realize consuming it in chunks and not on the whole there’s a tendency to not see the big picture of what Gaiman is going for.

Saga of the Swamp Thing: Book One by: Alan Moore: This was brilliant, incredibly trippy in places but brilliant. Moore’s first issue is a bit odd because it’s wiping the slate clean but then you get to The Anatomy Lesson and its themes of identity. Moore is also just such a fascinating author overall. x.com/jomo___/status/1691062115480510465?s=46&t=dEkathG6ZzDLkhNiHyrwZQ

Outlaws 1 : the Cartel of the Peaks the first volume of spin-off series to a good Belgian/French Space series Orbital (if only volumes could be printed more frequently - the first volume was in 2009 and now we are having a break before volume 9) While Orbital focussed on diplomatic troubleshooters Caleb Swaney and Mezoke Izzua, the spin-off focusses on Caleb's little sister and her life as an illegal immigrant caught between organised crime and trigger-happy police.

Hellblazer: Original Sins and The Devil You Know - Both these volumes are some of the darkest comics I have ever read and they’re honestly brilliant. John Constantine is a fascinating character to follow and the definition of the road to hell being paved with only good intentions. Delano only gives him a couple unambiguous wins but it also feels more reflective of the state of Thatcher’s Britain. There’s enough there to fill three hours of discussion. Also The Horrorist is a thing. x.com/jomo___/status/1696129333784408390?s=46&t=dEkathG6ZzDLkhNiHyrwZQ

Marvel Age #1000. I like these anthologies, but there's not so very much to write home about.

Wolverine and Ghost Rider Weapons of Vengeance. Well, I liked the art. There are also some nice action scenes. Apart from that, the book plays out exactly as I thought it would from the start. But at least gave me an hour of entertainment.

But at least gave me an hour of entertainment. I’m actually surprised they haven’t done a What If series or even within the regular universe where Wolverine is possessed by a Spirit of Vengeance. Would make him completely overpowered but since when has that ever stopped Marvel.

The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 - It’s fascinating reading comics from the 1960s since Stan Lee doesn’t seem to always understand it’s a visual medium and you can see the action the blocks of text are describing. Pretty much all the classic villains are here in some form even if the characterization in many cases are week. Issues 3 and 6 are the strongest and it’s nice that everything’s basically standalone but Peter’s character is very abrasive and Steve Ditko’s art is very hit or miss (he doesn’t do a great job at drawing people) x.com/jomo___/status/1706242782937968932?s=46&t=dEkathG6ZzDLkhNiHyrwZQ

Blade vs. Wolverine and Wolverine vs. Predator #1. I was in the mood for some slicing and dicing and graphic violence and blood and gore. And this was exactly what I got. Fun and entertaining, and with the photo- realistic art in Blade vs. Wolverine, you even see the blood dripping off the pages.

60th Marathon: Eleventh Doctor - Event: Hunters of the Burning Stone
“You’re a legend, alright, but not a dark one. You’ve been a thread of hope running throughout human history!”
I do so love this story. It embraces the ability of the comics to do things that the TV never could and commits to an utterly bonkers concept (the return of the Tribe of Gum, of all things!). At its heart is a love letter to the character of the Doctor, and redress the balance about some of the cynicism that had crept into his character at the time. And Ian and Barbara return and finally tie the knot. It’s just a lovely read, and it does a wonderful job tying up the arc leading up to it.
All in all, just as good as I remember it being on my first read…10 years ago…oh lord…

The Uncanny X-Men Vol. 1 - This was such a fun ride from start to finish. Yes, I know that Claremont’s run is massive and sprawling and it suffers a little from starting out bimonthly but the characters just shine off the page and it’s so much easier to read than Stan Lee’s work. x.com/jomo___/status/1716400885247479921?s=46&t=dEkathG6ZzDLkhNiHyrwZQ

Rivers of London- There be Dragons. I love the setting and the characters and this graphic novel is one of the better ones. Wonderful story about the power of music and how it can even be used to lure dragons ( or wyverns). Lots of Peter action, with support by Guleed and Nightingale. I really liked this.
