Kinda feels like the big lesson they should've learned from 'Friend of the Family' was to give River her own adventures, totally disconnected from the Doctors' stories. Guess not.

My hopes for this were that it would be a lot weirder, having the opportunity to explore a non-corporeal world. There’s opportunity for a strange, trippy series there.
That said, Valentine’s words talking about writing the last River Song story make me wonder whether this was intended to be a Diary boxset, but then got repurposed as the start of a new series. Doing a whole box set in this era might have inspired them to shift to this idea going forwards. Otherwise it does seem bonkers setting up a whole new scenario and focusing on her digital afterlife only to give her a body and send her to Earth. That could easily have been written around to do a normal River story.
I think the setting is actually ripe for powerful storytelling, having the majority of the population of Earth knowing they’ve been left to die. What are the chances River will take them all back to the library computer at the end?

Sounds like much the same issue of the 2DAs, which teased the premise of a post-War Games setting, only to revert back to the usual Jamie/Zoe TARDIS team to tell stories that would've worked just as well pre-War Games.

Sounds average & unimaginative.

I was already on the fence about this one *before* the events of this past week.
Hrm....
I do intend to make one last purchase this month, before pulling back and waiting things out for a bit, but hrm... I'd kind of hoped to benefit from the opinions of other folks willing to dive into this own on release day, but I suspect not many people are gonna bother. Anyone here still planning to pick this one up day 1?

I'm not convinced anything will be released until at least the middle of the month. Noticed that my next pre-paid releases both have release dates of last day of their respective months when I call them up online. Wouldn't know about the app. Their developers have deemed my device far too old for their software, when the previous version worked splendidly. Ageism.

Less ageism, I think, and more just the usual anti-consumer bollocks.

One episode in and so far I'm really liking the pacing of this. It definitely feels like it's taking inspiration from Friend of the Family, which is exactly what I was hoping for. Very strong first episode!

I'm finding this to be top tier stuff. Loads of world building and great original characters, and an interesting new dilemma for River. Definitely the direction I'd hoped for with this new run.

Absolutely loved it. Exactly what I’d want from a typical River release; location hopping, a mystery to unravel, a new world to explore and some great guest characters. I’m not sure I agree that it’s inspired by Friend of the Family. I think it’s only alike in that it’s very much one story. I’d argue it has more in common with the earlier sets of the range in the way it’s presented, wider in scope and dotting about the place. This one does have more of a through line with its objectives and recurring guest cast, though.
The Ark in Space connections were very well done too, I thought. Less a prequel and more using connective tissue to add more layers to the apocalyptic Earth setting.
I’m not sure that the post-Library setting was essential to the story being told, to be honest. It sort of keeps covering the same references without actually doing anything with it and we were back to business as usual with River from the get go. It does come into play more in the final few scenes, but the solution could’ve just as easily been anything else. Not a major criticism, but also not the big deal it was made out to be in the sets coverage. Whether we pick back up on it and it forges the series ahead remains to be seen.
Details of the next set please!

I have to say I was very very happy with this release. I love River and her exploits but this one just really felt more elevated. Let’s see if I remember how to put spoiler tags in…. When I heard them say Nerva Beacon I kind of gasped. I should have imagined that being on earth with the solar flares that might come in to play. BF is now mentioning this is their news article which I think they should let it be a surprise.
I will say I was truly shocked that in the last act they didn’t find a way to keep River in the corporeal world. In the after interviews the author of the piece mentions it isn’t the last set. I just don’t think we can pull her in and out of the library multiple times without it starting to be weird.
I will say that if we do not see River further on in her life, this was an amazing way for her to go out saving millions of people.

Does the audio use the diary of river song theme or a new composition ?
