So, today's Nintendo Direct was kind of HUGE, huh? Y'all may not know this about me, but I'm a bit of an RPG snob. It's one of my biggest hyperfixations (second only to starships... most of the time). I can't believe they announced a remake of one of the best JRPGs of all time like it was an afterthought. Absolutely, completely, ridiculously wild. If any of y'all are especially fond of this genre, you'll be in for quite a treat when that Trails in the Sky remake comes around next year. By itself, it's only a "pretty good" game, but it functions as one half of a single story with its sequel, SC, which will presumably also get a remake fairly soon, and I am very emphatically not exaggerating when I say SC is easily my favorite JRPG. Above the Final Fantasies, the Suikodens, Shadow Hearts, the Xenos and Chronos, and even the Dragons Quest. An utterly sublime game; a pinnacle of the form. So I'm getting pretty restless just thinking about the remake. It's been a looooong time since I've gotten this hyped up about a game. Fire Emblem: Three Houses... It’s taken me forever to get to this point, but the front half of the game can be a bit of a slough to get through, considering that there aren’t many differences until the time skip. Oof, yeah. I still need to return to my playthrough -- I left off short,y after the time-skip. I think subsequent playthroughs are supposedly less of a slog due to the faux-NG+ the statue bonuses provide, so there's that.

Finished Dave the Diver (or at least it’s main plot, as it’s another one where really you can keep playing as long as you fancy). It’s a good little game, which keeps adding mechanics as you go, even in the final boss. Next up on my Switch will be Outer Wilds, as it’s been one I’ve vaguely heard about and sounds up my street and a physical edition literally just came out.

Just discovered a new release on Steam, "Gori- Cuddly Carnage". OMG. This is FUN. It is a game about a skateboarding cat riding a deadly hoverboard (with blades). It is an action-platformer with racing elements and the "spin-to-win" melee combat which is used in some ARPGs. You basically jump and perform skate tricks, all the while slicing and dicing the enemies (undead unicorns so far) with the fast spinning slicing hoverboard-blades.
I had given up on action platformers for the steam deck, maybe I am too old or my two left thumbs are just in the way of me operating a game controller.
However, the gameplay in this game is very intuitive and yes, I admit, I play on easy, but it is very FUN. It is also extremely colorful and cheerful in a comedy-horror way. The game is pretty much neon psychedelic. No idea what the developers were smoking while they made this game, but it must have been the good stuff.
All the flashing lights and the dopamine hits while you do your scores are absolutely gold for someone with ADHD like me.
This is a game which I could play just for the sheer fun of it.

I won't ever stoop so low as to call it a good game, but I've picked up the new Gundam Breaker -- Gundam Break 4, not to be confused with New Gundam Breaker (which was hot garbage) -- and been playin' it. It is... serviceable, combat-wise. Far from good, but fully functional -- a very low bar that very few Gundam games in recent memory have managed to clear. Well, I say "Gundam games," but that's not really the case. Rather, it's a gunpla game. So the whole point is to grind for new model kit components, and customize the giant robot of your dreams. It's a very robust customization system, with a TON of options, so if you're a Gundam fan... very addictive. I fear it may result in me buying even more gunpla, even though I already have a very sizeable backlog... but who am I to resist the siren song of an MG Tallgeese? Frankly, it's all I can do to hold myself back from the PGU Gundam (a hulking monster of a kit that'd set me back a good $300 USD). Anyway, GB4 is one of those mindless sorts of game that makes for great fodder while listening to audio dramas, so I figure it'll be my go-to for a while. Just discovered a new release on Steam, "Gori- Cuddly Carnage". OMG. This is FUN. It is a game about a skateboarding cat riding a deadly hoverboard (with blades). Sounds absolutely bonkers: color me intrigued.

Just discovered a new release on Steam, "Gori- Cuddly Carnage". OMG. This is FUN. It is a game about a skateboarding cat riding a deadly hoverboard (with blades). Sounds absolutely bonkers: color me intrigued. This is one of the reasons I love Indie games so much. There is so much weird and wonderful to be found.
I am tired of the samey games coming from the big publishers.
I crave for niche games like Nova Drift, Farewell North, Wildermyth, Driftwood (about a skateboarding sloth with amazing chill soundtrack) and even Dave the Diver (which people have been raving about above, but not sure it counts as "Indie" since it is from a bigger company).
Breath of fresh air.
Take some simple ideas, go completely over the top with them, add some unique art-style, maybe also add some cute animals and never stinge on the weirdness. Dave the Diver is a great example, since the basic game-play is very simple, but what they make out of it is fantastic. Or look at "Shadows over Loathing", a game where the characters are only stick-figures. But the writing- OMG, the plot, atmosphere and writing!
As for Gori- Cuddly Carnage- I played 2 hours straight yesterday, and this says a lot, since I have a short attention span. And two left thumbs. And I still managed to have fun and beat the bosses.
Yes, maybe as serious fighting / platforming games go, maybe this is too simple? But it is fun, looks unique and it utterly weird. Totally my thing. And the cat is very cute, plus, you can change the appearance (there are even a couple of free skin packs).

My nephew and I did a playthrough of The Untitled Goose Game over the weekend. It was really cute. That game now is the only game I own on multiple formats, as I recently bought the Switch edition to co-op with my girlfriend. A lot of fun.

OMG! I just found another indie game that totally hits my nerve. "Mullet- Mad Jack". It is another action rogue-lite. Extremely fast Egoshooter. Pure sensory overload.
Absolutely bonkers colorful art style.
Plays perfectly on the Steam Deck.
Pure fun. Plenty of dopamine hits for my ADHD brain.

Dipping my toes back into BG3 this week. Love the game to death, but it can be really hard to juggle all of the FOMO and choice paralysis. My nephew and I did a playthrough of The Untitled Goose Game over the weekend. It was really cute. What a great and fun game. But it is evil. You basically play as evil incarnate.
I was attacked by a goose as a kid. They can be genuinely horrifying.

Lots of games on the go lately.
The one taking up most of my time is Slay the Spire. I’ve been having tons of fun with it and I’m finding it very addictive. I’m up to ascension 1 with Iron Clas and the Siley, but not much luck with the others. But I can’t make heads or tails of the Watcher.
Last week was all final Fantasy XVI and High on Life.
I made it just past the Eikon fight with Garuda, lots of spectacle in that fight, and I’m looking forward to seeing where the story goes next. I’m loving the return to the fantasy setting, I’ve been wanting that for years now.
High on Life is fun so far, I’ve only just completed the first bounty, but the humor has been on point so far and it’s very entertaining with its Rick and Morty style vibe.
Last night, I restarted Skyward Sword as I’ve yet to finish the switch port. It’s a good game, but definitely one of the lesser Zelda’s. My biggest issue is that the entire game feels like a massive dungeon. Every step has to be earned and there isn’t any down time between the large puzzle areas. Still, I think it’ll be a good companion for the early big finish stories I’ll be listening to while I’m playing it.
With any luck I’ll be done before echoes of Wisdom drops on the 26th, but then again, that was my thought process when I was playing skyward sword before tears of the kingdom dropped.
