Bram Stokers Dracula, Gary Oldman performance is still my favourite incarnation, love Hopkins Van Helsing portrayal as well. As Mark Gattis pointed out, the major issue is that it's really about as much to do with Bram Stoker's Dracula as the Count from Sesame Street. The film, and Coppola, really did sell it as the most faithful version ever when it just isn't. It's Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula and that would have been fine. Same as the next years "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" - just because you put a few things in that other versions haven't doesn't make it "faithful" - it's a film. We know what cinematic and dramatic licence are! Dracula is lot campier and stylistic than any before but I think it's a lot of fun in places, not always intentionally, from the atrocious acting of Reeves and Ryder to Oldman doing Vlad by way of Norma Desmond at the start. He's having a lot of fun. Smashing support cast too, especially Tom Waits as Renfield. Genius casting. Hopkins has three roles I think - Van Helsing, the narrator at the start (who is not Van Helsing as Hopkins is using his own accent not the apparently Dutch one he's got as Van H) and the Priest in the pre-credits. So he was game for it to do so much. He's not one of my favourite Van Helsings - I doubt anyone will ever lodge Cushing and Sister Agatha has recently become a real contender -but Hopkins does play it with an arrogance I really like. "Oldman doing Vlad by way of Norma Desmond.." 🤣🤣🤣

I am a total night owl 🦉 and can’t sleep until close to 1 am, so late last night I did my annual viewing of one of the greatest movies of all time, Labyrinth!😃👨🏻🎤 Oh My God I love everything about that movie!😍 It strange, magical, romantic, but most of all it has the Starman himself, DAVID BOWIE!!!!!!!😍👨🏻🎤 My favorite scene by far is the masked ball scene, I may be mildly obsessed with just that scene alone! I could probably watch just that one scene alone a hundred times on a loop and not get bored 🤤 It helps that Jareth was one of my earliest crushes 🥰 and I may relate to Sarah more than a little (let’s just say we both have very similar bedrooms and over the top fantastical imaginations)😉
I mentioned this before on “what did you watch on YouTube” after rewatching the ballroom scene on David Bowie’s birthday, but as a fun little aside I would like to share that my Paul Spragg entry last year was a homage to Labyrinth, complete with similar ballroom scene. A deaged Sarah Jane woke up in a mysterious castle that was drawn rather than real with a charming but evil Jareth like Tenth Doctor look a like who was trying to to tempt her to stay and forget her real life with the promise of giving her Timelord powers. Meanwhile the real 10 was transformed into a teddy bear that began to decay and leak stuffing every time he tried to speak. Sarah had to work together with the Teddy Bear Ten to save the other people who were tempted to stay and had been transformed into toys in a strange hospital like wing of the castle. In hindsight, I think this story would work much better as a full length audio and possibly swap out 10 for 12 since he is the most Bowie of the Doctors🤔Maybe one day I will redevelop it and pitch it to Big Finish as full length audio😊
On a side note I just realized between this and my idea about a deaged 12, a lot of my Doctor Who story ideas seem to involve lots of transformations/deaging🤔😳😄

Finally saw The Rise of Skywalker.
It was alright. The twist was stupid and Rose got done dirty but overall, it was good for what it was.

Should have ended Stuart, thought this weakest of the three, Famke was criminally underused in this one. Erratic camera work, love see what the director of John Wick would do with a Taken film.

Us, a weird but very creepy horror flick from director Jordan Peele which was quite a unsettling watch, the twist at the end was brilliant.

1917
This is really something of a technical masterpiece. The long takes really add to the presentation of the story and the landscapes are pulled off really well. The soundtrack is really good too. The characters are quite standard for war films, but it’s really the presentation that elevates this film.

Master of Dark Shadows.....doc on Dark Shadows creator Dan Curtis. As a hardcore, lifelong DS fan, there wasn’t much here I didn’t know. It was nice to hear Ben Cross saying pleasant things about the 1990 revival. 1917......a film I liked a lot if did not love. I thought the narrative did a nice job of shifting and raising the stakes early on in the film and the “unbroken” shot trickery gave the film a visceral drive to it.

The Untouchables This is a film where i feel if you replace any actor with someone else it wouldnt work as well. Everyone is on form and what a story brilliantly told.
Beyond the Gates Loved this 80's Homage. A great film and worth the wait
Daybreakers While enjoyable, there's so many plotlines going on that they all feel underused
Jojo Rabbit This was just fantastic. Nicely balanced with the Comedy and Drama. I also had no idea it was based on a book
The Last Boy Scout An enjoyable film. Would have loved to have seen the full NC-17 version
