This could be truly one of a kind.

Now, aside from just chronicling the strike, this thread's also good for illuminating the realities of being a writer in streamer Hollywood. A lot of this can be wrapped up in jargon, so I do endeavour to try and demystify. Here's a comprehensive Vulture article about the damage that the streaming revolution has wrought on TV. www.vulture.com/2023/06/streaming-industry-netflix-max-disney-hulu-apple-tv-prime-video-peacock-paramount.htmlIn fact, if you want even more specific examples, look up #BadApple on Twitter for stories about AppleTV shows and how the writers there are basically played like yoyos. Reneged contracts, mini rooms, months if not years waiting for payments, it's a hot mess.

There may be news coming up with the DGA and their deal. Meantime, as I couldn't find somewhere else to put it for the moment, there's been a new hashtag circulating, #ComicsBrokeMe, which is what it sounds like: creators talking about the appalling pay, mismanagement and conditions in the comic book industry.

Today, the WGGB (The UK writers union) is doing a solidarity protest in Leicester Square. And there's some familiar faces there:

Today, the WGGB (The UK writers union) is doing a solidarity protest in Leicester Square. And there's some familiar faces there: I’m curious, with the very real possibility of a SAG strike in solidarity, what would it take for the WGGB also to strike? Or would the American Guilds negotiating set the precedent for the British Film/Television Industry as well?

Or would the American Guilds negotiating set the precedent for the British Film/Television Industry as well? That's a twofold question: 1) Basically, the UK guild is legally forbidden from doing solidarity strikes and can't authorise a strike like the WGA can. WGGB basically has to politely negotiate for everything, and it can be long and gruelling. 2) Yes, it can certainly act a template and obviously America holds a lot of sway on entertainment, which everyone wishes to emulate. How far it'll go, well, that remains to be seen.

DGA has opted to stick with the deal they made.
Again, not surprising this happened. Now, we see what happens with SAG.

Actor's union SAG had their negotiations extended last month, but well...

A twofer: first, as we are now approaching 60+ days of striking, some of our older members who remember may be wondering 'so how does this stack up to last time'? Well:
And then a sort of return to a prior post, where I brought up reality TV. At first glance, surely reality TV can't be hurt by studio penny pinching, and it's easy street for people working on it. After all, isn't just cheap, lowest common denominator pap to begin with? Well, like so much else, it's not that simple. Here's a story producer discussing how things have been the last few years:

Oh, the studios are really getting scared. Like this is next level desperate.

So, to put it mildly, the AMPTP has screwed the pooch so utterly and completely. A double strike.
This is huge, cosmic even - this straight up paralyzes entire projects from shooting, rather than merely slows them down. Can't exactly go look for a non-union equivalent to say Russell Crowe or Ryan Reynolds, eh?

Not followed it constantly but it seems a no deal is down to one exec absolutely refusing to budge to any union's purposel (the last Strike ran for over 3 months) Regards mark687

The execs don’t care. They’ve got their funds in order and they can outlast people who are fast approaching bankruptcy and homelessness. They’ll wait them out or just get the scabs in, NCIS: Beijing coming soon. Star Trek: The Further Adventures ofvthe USS Filmed in Mexico coming soon!

They’ll wait them out or just get the scabs in, NCIS: Beijing coming soon. Star Trek: The Further Adventures ofvthe USS Filmed in Mexico coming soon! Only problem: the studios have bought wholehog into techbro culture (if the AI wasn't already a dead giveaway). You know what tech bros are famously not: tactical, patient or planning for the long game. They've shown nothing but myopia throughout this whole endeavour. You don't beg for a mediator to try (and fail) to stop the actors from walking, if you are actually in the stronger position.
And you know what's the cherry on the cake? They got their fiscal quarter coming up, meaning all these execs are about to face their shareholders. People who have now lost millions in profit, and the studios have utterly failed to stop that hemorrhaging even more.
