That’s it, it’s over. SAG is allowing work to resume on AMC productions because arrangements have been made. Once work starts in one place, other places will rush to make “arrangements”. Once SAG leaves the picket line the writers lose their best ally and the only thing that attracts media attention, and the only thing that might make the companies move is media attention, actor tweets etc are the only thing contradicting the compliant media line of “greedy, lazy writers…” so without the actors the writers are doomed to lose public support. Maybe it’s the optimist in me, but the writers had lots of support before SAG went on strike, and with companies like Disney hiring crisis PR teams, I don’t think the actors are essential to win.

The companies see writers as easily replaceable with *cough*scabs*cough* non-Union writers but the actors were a shield, now it looks like the companies are leveraging the actors back to work … well, it’s not looking good.

Not exactly. variety.com/2023/tv/news/sag-aftra-walking-dead-restart-production-1235693350/TLDR : the number of productions that SAG-AFTRA and AMC have come to an arrangement that can recommence work is three, and that is purely because those productions are filmed abroad. They are classed as 'independent productions' and neither AMC nor its production arm - Stalwart Films - fall under the remit of the AMPTP (although they do fall under the term 'authorised company' meaning they have to adhere to the terms negotiated by the studio). Since July some 300 similar 'arrangements' have been negotiated, and while these are proving unpopular with SAG-AFTRA members who feel it undermines the strike, the union board have gone to some lengths to state that it actually undermines the AMPTP - I guess their rationale is that if US producers see overseas productions resuming and US based ones remaining in limbo, they might start reconsidering renegotiations with both the actors and the writers. Time will tell who is right.

I did not really follow how the strikes have been going recently so maybe you all knew already but : Who is explicitely a struck show in the US and some influencers have also decided to stop creating content around it in solidarity. (allegedly because of Disney+ and Sony) More info in this video, mostly starting at 11:27 www.youtube.com/watch?v=GueC87pehek&t=687s

Talks to resume. deadline.com/2023/09/writers-strike-wga-amptp-to-meet-next-week-1235547417/Between the unpopular price hikes for streamers and the bad press from Drew Barrymore trying to restart her talk show without writers, there might be the chance of a breakthrough here with the studios. However, given past behavior, there's still room to be skeptical - Person of Interest writer David Slack opines why:

US TV Networks apparently resigned to not showing any new solely US produced Live Action Scripted material for the rest of the Year.

But don't forget the Mouse is involved and seemly a belief that money down the drain is better investment than giving it to people who'd make them more content which keeps and gets more customers Regards mark687

Regards mark687 If they can't reach agreement by October, when stuff needs to get rolling to meet the new season, yep and worse. Here's Doctor Strange writer Cargill confirming this:

Here's the latest from Warners, and likely the same conversations are happening at Disney and the others:
One scenario people are floating is the traditional studios break from the streamers and negotiate separate agreements with the writers and actors, which is certainly possible. A24 was able to get actors shooting on its movies by making an outside agreement with SAG a few months back.

For those who might have missed it, Marvel’s in-house VFX workers have unanimously voted and have joined IATSE, the union for production roles such as camera crew, production designers etc. This is historic, as they are the first VFX workers to successfully unionize, and Disney’s in-house VFX workers are about to vote themselves. Here’s a link with more info. www.cnn.com/2023/09/13/business/marvel-vfx-workers-union-vote/index.html

Nope. I won't support that, as much as I enjoyed the 1st which was a "what if? Superman/Evil story.

Drew Barrymore crossed the picket line. Scab. Not only that, but she has released an apology video where she says she’ll continue scabbing, which shows how much she doesn’t actually care. Oh, and multiple audience members have been kicked out for wearing WGA solidarity pins.

Well, least Drew finally saw sense.
Bill Maher, less likely, but this is still a dent for the studios either way, and a clear sign of which side the power of public pressure lies.
