The Roof of the World
Not a lot to say about this one. I found it pretty boring outside of a couple of interludes with Erimem. A messy script, as well. Even on a second listen, I couldn't tell you for the life of me what was going on. Etheral weirdness is usually right up my alley but this story misses the mark.
It's not entirely without merit, the idea of Erimem examining her life while her friends think she's dead and mourn her is decent material, but it's underneath an awful lot of padding.
Are they still putting press quotes on the product pages? I came up with some:
"It exists! 5/10"
"I listened to Big Finish for the duration of two hours."
"Occasional bouts of interest! Big Finish is at it again!"

That and Axis of Insanity are some of the low points of the Main Range where it felt like things were running out of gas.

That and Axis of Insanity are some of the low points of the Main Range where it felt like things were running out of gas. I don't mind Axis, and even Roof of the World isn't the absolute bottom of the barrel...but around this time in the Main Range outside of Evelyn and Hex there's definitely a feeling of stagnation.

It always amuses me when people say that the Main Range these days is going down the pan. Throughout it's long run, it ain't half had some ropey spells; scrolling through my app I always get a shudder when I hit post-50 and those washed-out covers of the Divergent Universe come in to view!

MR: The Rani Elite. This is enjoyable but just above average, plenty of padding throughout. A bit like Vampire of the Mind in that respect.
As someone mentioned recently, at times you just feel like tucking in to a fairly run of the mill story and I'm having one of those days.
DS: The Death Mask (my favourite of the Dark Shadows range)

Yesterday I listened to The Human Frontier and I honestly don't know what to think of it. For all of it being touted as a celebration of humanity, it didn't feel like that to me. It was a damn good original sci-fi tale though. When Nick Briggs is locked out of the toy chest, he writes some outstanding stuff.
Today's docket is Timeslip: The War That Never Was. Will it be as good as Age of the Death Lottery? We'll see.

The Harvest
Overall, a very strong story with an almost new series feel to it. Right? It's such a success - giving us a glimpse into an alternate reality where the TV Movie never happened and McCoy and Aldred returned to their roles years later. It gets extra points from me for preceding the winning formula of "Rose" by a year - i.e., welcoming new audiences by having an engaging new character be our lead for the story and ultimately join the TARDIS crew.

We need more stories by Dan Abnett. He is awesome in creating believable characters even in the most unbelievable settings. And he can create atmosphere.

Continuing my re-listen to the War Doctor audios. Yesterday I visited East Berlin and liked the story better this time. I am still not quite comfortable with the Doctor teaming up with supposed baddies- here it is not Nazis, but the STASI, the communist secret police. These are the guys who got people "disappeared". But at least I had a laugh at the Doctor speeding up that old Trabbi.

I think there are genuine criticisms to be made of the Main Range late in its life - doesn't feel "Main" anymore, doesn't take enough risks, what have you - but I don't recall it ever being as consistently underwhelming as it is from the 50-100 range or so. Right? It's such a success - giving us a glimpse into an alternate reality where the TV Movie never happened and McCoy and Aldred returned to their roles years later. Absolutely. It's a very interesting look at what might have been if they'd come back around 1993, say. Season 25 and 26 seemed to be heading in this direction, so it's a sort of missing link. As for Rose, well...the more I listen to the pre-2005 Big Finish catalog, the more I realize RTD must've learned from it.

It's amazing how much this story also harks back to An Unearthly Child as well... Part one is almost entirely focused on Hex and his relationship with others, just like Susan's with Ian and Barbara. The Doctor keeps in the background and allowing us to see Hex's world and become a part of it. Clearly, the same trick was done with Rose a year later (there are some good parallels in format and use of an old monster) and it is also repeated with The Woman Who Fell to Earth. The Harvest also helps in that it is good storytelling and comes across as convincing. It isn't a faux-199x setting that had plagued most of the McCoy releases at that point.

I always felt that the MR had a fallow patch between 50-100. I wonder if that was due to the return of the TV show and any controversial/novel ideas being rested for a while. It doesn't help that key characters begin to be sidelined/phased out... Certainly, the MR is in a better state now though. Several very strong trilogies in recent years for 5 and 6, with the odd 7 being generally good...

As someone that was listening at the time of release, the crushing disappointment of Zagreus took some of the shine off for me as well. I didn't click with the Divergent Universe stuff (it didn't seem well-coordinated as a series of stories) and went through a rough patch where listening started to feel like an obligation. And as you'd mentioned, the TV show returning with such style didn't help with how I was connecting to the audios. A few gems for me in 51-100 (The Harvest, Arrangements for War, LIVE 34, The Kingmaker), but overall that's when the Main Range became about "wait for reviews/pick and choose" for me.

Right off the bat, creating anything is tough. Creating something good is even tougher. Creating something good month in and month with any degree of consistency is mind numbingly difficult. That Gary Russell was directing, producing and I guess story editing the vast majority of the Main Range productions through what 90 or so? Plus producing and directing Benny and whatever other early side projects BF had going, well, there was always going to hit a point where, I’ll use the term again, things ran out of gas. Yes some of the greatest Big Finish successes are in the first 100 but also some of their absolute worst are in there as well. I don’t know that the lows of the MR under Nick ever sunk as deep as some of the pre-Nick serials did but in their place what we have gotten are stretches where the MR was painfully average or quickly forgettable. Bringing in different production teams for each Doctor was one of the smartest things Nick ever did. More voices contributing and each Doctor operating under a different sensibility instead of just Nick or David freshened up the adventures of 5, 6 & 7. I also think the success of that experiment set up whatever realignment we will be seeing moving forward. Anyway, yeah. Creating is hard.

Which is why I try not to be overly critical - or rude even - when I post on here. When someone is downright horrible about something that people have toiled on I dont really like it. I've slagged the Dark Flame off many a time, but jeez it's much better than i could muster! Ps at the back end of 2ltrs of cider

UNIT Dominion
Fun 7 and UNIT boxset! Love Alex McQueen’s hamtastic performance!😁 I had listened to him a few times before but I think he is especially gloriously over the top here! Also loved the creativity with all the weird creatures like the sky heads!😀 I had not encountered Dr Elizabeth Klein before but she sounds intriguing, I might go back and listen to her other audios🤔 Definitely a memorable box set!😀
