I just finished the Subscriber Short Trip- Only Connect and I really loved it. It was such a small, quiet, wonderfully written story with a really sad ending. I don't know who read it, but he was wonderful.

I've been catching up on the 4th season of 4DAs.
4.1, The Exxilons: Authentic 70s vibe; almost belonged in a Graham Williams Presents boxed set. More thought-provoking than I'd originally given it credit for. solid A.
4.2, The Darkness of Glass. Probably atmospheric & spooky, but it really didn't do much for me. B-, I think. It kept my attention, anyway.
4.3, Requium for the Rocket Men. Pure delight at every turn, though I'm not thrilled at the ending--I actually think this should've been a six-parter, with a Leela-and-Marshall, Doctor-lite story for parts 3-4, ending #4 with the current ending to #2--but that's just me. Solid A, verging on an A+.
4.4, Death Match. I'd somehow listened to this in isolation earlier in the year, and I hadn't cared for it. It plays a lot better in context. Basically, it's The Hunger Games in fancier clothes (not that they could admit it in the extras). Probably an A-. It contains some good "fixes" for Invasion of Time, too.
4.5, Suburban Hell. I'm listening to it right now. It seemed tiresome, so I skipped it at first. Second half seems better than the first, anyway.
4.6, The Cloisters of Terror. Like the 8DA story The Cannibalists, this story satirizes Christianity for 50 minutes, then spends 1-2 sentences paying lip service to how faith can occasionally provide some virtues. Not convincing. That said, it was actually an inventive, unpredictable story with an unusual premise and a wonderful supporting character in Dame Emily. B-with-an-asterisk.

I have a bit of time off work, so have decided to re-listen to the Counter Measures box sets 1 to 3. I've just finished 1.1 Threshold and it was even better than I remembered.
I've got CM4 on my Christmas list, what a great series this is (was).

Just finished The Red Lady, part 2 of The Doom Coalition. Wow. Just wow! Kudos to John Dorney for penning such an excellent and unsettling script.

Listened to The Doom Coalition yesterday on my flight home from my weekend trip. For the second time. And enjoyed it just as much as the first time.

Tonight's regular listen was Prisoners of Fate Part Two. Absolutely loving this story so far. I also got to listen to Short Trips The Shadows of Serenity, which was enjoyable enough.
And since Halloween is right around the corner, I finally listened to Dark Shadows Beyond the Grave. I don't normally buy Dark Shadows since I never watched the TV series and generally don't care about vampires, but I absolutely love stories that imitate being an actual news broadcast so I figured I'd give it a shot. I'm glad I did, it delivered in spades and succeeded in creeping me out and giving me some serious chills multiple times!

Everyone who enjoys the horror genre should buy this. No prior knowledge needed. Absolute A+.

Finished up The Doom Coalition. Now I have to wait until March for part 2. Fortunately, I'll have UNIT and the War Doctor to help me pass the time.

Finished 4DA 4.5 Suburban Hell. I actually ended up skipping the final couple of tracks. Yes, I disliked it that much. There were a couple of clever lines of dialogue, but it's still probably an E, subjectively. Hope someone else enjoyed it. I guess maybe I'm just not into insulting-each-other-as-humor.
Also finished 4DA 4.07, The Fate of Krelos. Strange paradox of an episode, showing some well-executed character moments and unusual opportunities for voice acting on Jameson/Leela's part, but also some troubling characterization of the Doctor, who doesn't examine K9 when he obviously should & who needs to be reminded (!) to use his sonic screwdriver. If I'm smarter than the Doctor, there's a problem. Still, it really did an excellent job at stakes-raising and suspense-heightening, so kudos for that. Overall, I guess it's a B.
I'm in the middle of 4.8 right now, Return to Telos, where Leela may meet Jamie & the Fourth Doctor may meet the Cybermen. So far, it's intensely gripping ... nigh-epic. Solid A, if it keeps this up.

Much of it - in fact almost all the humour and domestic stuff - is a parody of Abigail's Party, a classic BBC tele-play. The CD certainly works a lot better if you know it.
