Beowulf (2007)
Remember this being quite impressive at the time and to be honest I still think the motion capture holds up. It’s definitely a very Hollywood version of the original poem though and I probably could have done without Angelina Jolie’s supermodel version of Grendel’s Mother.

Celebrating today by watching what I consider to be the least appreciated Star Wars movie - Solo.

Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939)
It was odd watching this movie having grown up watching the Disney version! That version must have been influenced so much by this version, even individual scenes and shots are very close. Especially the festival scene and public flogging of Quasimodo being very similar to the “Topsy Turvey” sequence. Some of the ways they were different from each other was interesting too. I don’t know if this version was closer to the book having not read it, but some of the choices this film made for what they focused on was strange. I did not expect it to open with a discussion on the merits of the Gutenberg printing press! Also all the focus on the king of France felt odd. The poet love interest was odd too! Is there a male character who isn’t interested in Esmerelda?! Loved Esmerelda and Quasimodo too! Charles Laughton should have been nominated for an academy award for this movie! He had so much sadness and yearning into the part.
Sidenote: Am I the only one who always wanted Quasimodo and Esmerelda to end up together? I guess I always liked non traditional pairings! Maybe the Disney live action remake will pair the two together instead of having her end up with the far more bland Phoebes?

The critics hated it, but I really enjoy it - I have a feeling you might too (the Wikipedia link gives away a spoiler, so beware)

Secret Life of Pets (2016)
So bland that as each second passes, I remember less and less about it.

Men in Black IIIt falls into a lot of bad sequel trappings, but still manages to be a fun entertaining. I mean I'm not gonna turn my nose up at more Frank the Pug. And the new villains, while not a patch on the astonishingly iconic Edgar the Bug, are a lot of fun too. (I never noticed how the two headed guy to stops showing up in Act 3. Apparently in a cut scene he takes over the post office.) And as much as I like Kay, the way this film undoes his character arc always leaves a sour taste in my mouth. I would have preferred the sequel to focus on Jay and Ell, or maybe even other Agents. At the very least they could have neuralized Kay at the end after bringing him back for 'one last job'. Especially seeing as they didn't make another film for 10 years, and even then he was barley in it. (Not that they had any way of knowing that I guess.) Inside Llewyn DavisVery haunting. Certainly a great film, but it really weighs heavy on you in parts. It was pretty trippy to see Poe Dameron and Kylo Ren singing about 'Outer'... 'Space' An American Tale and An American Tale 2: Fievel Goes WestAs beautiful and heart-touching as the original is, the second is so much more watchable. Every scene with Dom DeLuise as Tiger is pure gold!

Inside the Mind of Leonardo
Documentary on Leonardo Da Vinci staring Peter Capaldi as a modern day Da Vinci. It’s practically a one man show for him! A lot of it feels like just watching 12, and I mean that in the best possible way. Some scenes play like a deleted scene from “Heaven Sent”! I don’t think I would have watched this documentary if Capaldi wasn’t in it but I am glad I watched it 😊

Flora and Ulysses (2021)
At first, I thought this was just going to be like a Disney Channel Original Movie but with a budget.
However, I was pleasantly surprised. Has some nice funny moments in it and I was really impressed with the lead in the film. I foresee a great future for her when she gets much older.

The Manchurian Candidate (2004) fantastic suspenseful thriller, Denzel Washington performance is fantastic. one of my favourite actors. Deja vu, man on fire, the equaliser (both of them), unstoppable, 2 guns… Yup a very good actor is Denzel, another good film he did was Ricochet.

Shazam! A heck of a fun film. Aside from having a strong story and good characters, the mystical fantasy vibe really sets it apart from other Super Hero films. Still the only DC/Snyderverse entry I've seen. I've been meaning to watch Wonder Woman at some point as I've heard that's meant to be a good one too.

Mortal Kombat 2021.
A mixed bag, on the plus side decent fights & R rated fatalities plus a excellent Sub zero & Scorpion & a hilarious Kano.
On the bad, underwritten characters badly sidelined, some dodgy ikea budget actors (Raiden was shocking) & rushed third act.
Overall 3/5.
